Book excerpt: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are a class of alloys that display the unique ability to undergo nonlinear deformations and return to their original shape when heat is applied or the stress causing the deformation is removed. This unique "shape memory" characteristic is a result of a martensitic phase-change, which can be temperature induced (shape memory effect) or stress induced (superelastic effect). In this study, the cyclical behavior of NiTi, a binary shape memory alloy, is compared to the cyclical behavior of NiTiCr, a ternary SMA. The purpose of this study is to compare the behavior of a 0.085-in. diameter NiTiCr wire with the behavior of the same size NiTi wire to determine whether ternary SMAs are more viable ways to take advantage of the unique properties of SMAs for seismic applications. The experimental results showing the superelastic behavior of these alloys under cyclical tensile loading are summarized with attention to the effects of annealing temperature, strain rate, and cyclical training on the stress-strain hysteresis, maximum recoverable strain and equivalent viscous damping.

Book excerpt: Shape memory alloys Nickel-Titanium are well known for their superelastic properties associated with a martensitic elastic transformation, ferroelasticity due to the reorientation of martensite and finally shape memory effects. The properties of architectured NiTi materials, such a knitted NiTi, cellular materials,... depend on the constituting NiTi and of the geometry. The study deals with architectured composite materials made of architectured NiTi materials and silicone rubber elastomer. Such materials present numerous different properties, depending on the constituting materials and also on the interfaces and the topology.The first part of the study focuses on the interface between NiTi and silicone rubber. Among the tested solutions, plasma treatments were especially studied. The influence of treatment parameters on the interface resistance was firstly investigated by means of pull-out tests carried out on NiTi wires embedded in a silicone rubber matrix. Optimized parameters for plasma treatment were then applied in order to elaborate a tubular architectured material made of knitted NiTi and silicone rubber. The mechanical behavior of this composite was characterized by means of tensile and swelling tests.The second part of the study deals with silicone rubber behavior. Experiments were performed in order to evaluate the influence of temperature on the mechanical behavior of silicone rubbers, especially on the stress softening (Mullins Effect), mechanical hysteresis and stress relaxation. A model taking into account the mechanical hysteresis was then proposed. Based on numerous works in the field of rubber mechanics, the approach used a decomposition of the space in a finite number of directions. A monodimensional constitutive equation including hysteresis effects is written for each direction. This model was implemented in a finite elements software (ABAQUS) and was tested with structure simulations. In the third part of the study, the previous formalism was used model the mechanical behavior of NiTi, only In case of superelasticity. The results of the simulations carried out are in good agreement with those reported in the literature for tests on isotropic and anisotropic NiTi plates, which highlights the great interest of such an approach.

Book excerpt: NiTi (also known as Nitinol) is an almost equiatomic alloy of nickel and titanium and has many applications in various industries, such as biomedical, automotive, and aerospace. NiTi shape memory alloys undergo martensitic phase transformations under both thermal and mechanical loading and exhibit unique properties, such as superelasticity (SE) and shape memory effects (SME). Modeling the fatigue behavior of this alloy is very challenging due to the unique mechanical response of the material. Moreover, there are very limited studies on the fatigue behavior of this alloy under more realistic loading conditions, such as variable amplitude loading and multiaxial loading. In this study, strain-controlled cyclic experiments have been conducted in different conditions to study the variable amplitude fatigue behavior of superelastic NiTi. Nonzero mean strain/stress behavior of superelastic NiTi is investigated, and it is demonstrated that the classical fatigue models for mean strain/stress correction do not appropriately model the nonzero mean strain/stress fatigue behavior of superelastic NiTi. It is shown that, despite common metals (e.g., steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys), mean strain also affects the fatigue behavior of superelastic NiTi, as the resulting mean stress does not fully relax under cyclic load. Two energy-based fatigue models have been proposed based on the results in this study and provide acceptable correlation with experimental observations. The models proposed in this research, account for the effects of mean strain/stress and variations in cyclic deformation. The variations in the cyclic deformation can be due to several factors, such as slight changes in chemical composition, heat treatment processes, texture, etc. The predicted fatigue lives using the proposed fatigue model fall within scatter bands of 1.5 times the experimental life for constant amplitude loading. Analyses also show that the proposed total fatigue toughness parameter, (sigma symbol)Wt, together with the Rainflow cycle counting technique can accurately predict the fatigue life under more realistic loading condition, such as two-step (i.e. high-low and low-high) and variable amplitude load-paths.
