Book In flight Investigation of the Effects of Pilot Location and Control System Design on Airplane Flying Qualities for Approach and Landing

Download or read book In flight Investigation of the Effects of Pilot Location and Control System Design on Airplane Flying Qualities for Approach and Landing written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the handling qualities of large airplanes in the approach and landing flight phase was performed. An in-flight simulation experiment utilizing the USAF/Calspan Total In-Flight simulator was performed. A one-million pound statically-unstable delta-wing airplane model was used as a baseline about which variations were made. The primary variables were relative pilot position with respect to center of rotation, command path time delays and phase shifts, augmentation schemes and levels of augmentation. The experiment design, its conduct and analysis of the data are described. Results indicate that the approach and landing task with large airplanes is a low bandwidth task. Low equivalent short period frequencies and relatively long time delays can be tolerated only when the pilot is located a considerable distance forward of the center of rotation. As the pilot position is moved aft towards and then behind the center of rotation, as is the space shuttle, pilot ratings are degraded. A multi-loop analysis of pitch attitude and altitude control gave insight into this pilot position phenomenon. The control problem experienced by the pilots, when seated behind the center of rotation, tended to occur at low altitude when they were using visual cues of rate of sink and altitude. These configurations also lack the initial normal acceleration cue from pitch acceleration that conventional large airplane configurations possess. A direct lift controller improved final flight path control of these shuttle-like configurations.

Book A Working Bibliography on the Effects of Motion on Human Performances

Download or read book A Working Bibliography on the Effects of Motion on Human Performances written by Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography compiled from a number of disciplines which bear on the problem of motion and its effects on human performance is presented. Psychophysiological reports in the area of spatial orientation, perception, and receptor mechanisms provide background on the human organism in relation to motion stimuli. The effects of aerospace vehicle motion are represented by a compilation of studies of performance under acceleration, vibration and buffeting, tumbling, and weightlessness. Reports on training and motion simulation, equipment and methodology, and general anlyses of the whole problem area are presented. (Author).

Book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities

Download or read book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities written by Charles R. Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is directed toward investigating the effects on pilots rating of large variations (L alpha) in the relative amplitude and phase of the basic airplane responses to elevator control. The effects of L alpha and true speed on longitudinal flying qualities, optimum control gain, and normal acceleration response to turbulence were investigated in a ground simulator. The steady state ratio of normal acceleration to angle of attack was found to be of significance both to the flying qualities of an airplane and to the optimum longitudinal control gain. Normal acceleration response to rough air was demonstrated to be primarily a function of L alpha and the short period frequency and damping ratio.
