Emphasis is placed on strategic issues including railhead location analysis in multi-facility settings and product mix analysis (container versus trailer) by railhead within rail networks. The research models developed herein focus on the effects of railhead location and mix on drayage efficiency relative to shipment density profiles provided by BSNF Railway in the Chicago, Illinois area. The research advances the state of the art in intermodal simulation modeling through concurrent consideration of multiple-terminal network design and terminal activities such as hustling and train building.

Intermodal freight is a primary revenue stream for Class I railroads in the United States. Intermodal traffic volume has increased approximately 10 percent since 2011 and reached new all-time record volumes during the summer of 2017. This growth combined with shifts in traffic patterns and a move from trailers to containers, has strained the capacity of existing intermodal terminals. In response, railroads are expanding their intermodal service capabilities by upgrading existing terminals and building new ones. Although intermodal freight generates substantial revenue, its operating and capital investment requirements are substantial. Under constrained capital budgets, railroads must make informed decisions regarding investments in new intermodal terminals, facility expansion and optimizing the efficiency and capacity of existing facilities. These decisions require a detailed understanding of intermodal facility capacity factors and their interactions, including size and layout of the facilities, and number and type of lift equipment. Currently, intermodal terminal capacity is largely evaluated on the basis of practitioner planning experience and a limited number of independent capacity factors. There is a need for a more thorough understanding of the interaction between fundamental factors that influence intermodal terminal capacity. This project proposes to investigate the factors affecting intermodal terminal capacity by developing a simulation model of the intermodal terminal operation in AnyLogic. The project team will develop logic for the intermodal loading, unloading and dray processes and translate them to the AnyLogic discrete-event simulation platform. After developing a model of a representative intermodal terminal, the project team will simulate a series of experiment scenarios designed to quantify the effect of various capacity factors and their interactions."--

Book excerpt: With the challenges attributable to increasing freight traffic and roadway congestion it is necessary to investigate opportunities for better management of goods movements. Rail-truck intermodal freight transportation can be considered as one such solution for reducing long-haul truck traffic on highways. For the rail-truck intermodal freight transportation to act as an effective transportation alternative, it is necessary to evaluate its impacts on the transportation system. A framework for evaluation of rail-truck intermodal terminal projects with qualitative and quantitative measures has been established using public goals and private stakeholder perspective. With the use of a case study, some of these measures have been evaluated. Recommendations have also made on data collection procedures for making a full scale evaluation. The case study selected for the Project is the proposed freight intermodal terminal at Petersburg, Virginia, conceived by the Norfolk Southern Corporation. This analysis formed a bridge between a region and a corridor based analysis. The key findings of the study are as follows: (a) Evaluation of an intermodal terminal project requires a systematic multi-regional modeling approach; (b) The impacts of an intermodal terminal are region and trade corridor specific; and (c) In cases where estimated intermodal rail drayage forms a small share of the overall truck traffic, the introduction of an intermodal terminal does not have substantial impacts on accessibility, mobility or safety. The study successfully developed models for estimation of impacts, including a two-stage accessibility model for drayage, a truck-rail mode choice model, truck involved crash models, and secondary local freight traffic impact model, mainly using data from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
