Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems.

Download or read book New Results in Numerical and Experimental Fluid Mechanics XII written by Andreas Dillmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers contributions to the 21st biannual symposium of the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB) and the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). The individual chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects. Special emphasis is given to collaborative research projects conducted by German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industries. By addressing a number of cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field. The book’s primary emphasis is on aerodynamic research in aeronautics and astronautics, and in ground transportation and energy as well.

Book The Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Boundary Layers and Film Cooling

Download or read book The Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Boundary Layers and Film Cooling written by Kunlun Liu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new finite volume algorithm has been developed to solve a variety of flows by using large eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation. This finite volume algorithm was developed using a dual time stepping approach with a preconditioning technique and a new factorization implementation. The method takes the advantage of pressure based and density-based methods. Thus, it provides an efficient way to numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations at the low Mach numbers. Meanwhile, to generate the inflow conditions for the simulation of turbulent boundary layers, a dynamic recycling method was proposed. In addition, a characteristic boundary condition method was suggested for the outlet boundary conditions of external wall shear flows. The implementation of the methods was validated by obtaining solutions to a number of flows including turbulent boundary layers with or without heat transfer, turbulent boundary layers subjected to free stream turbulence, and supersonic adiabatic turbulent boundary layers. Good agreement between the present results and benchmark results in the literature was achieved. With the new numerical method and boundary condition technique it is possible to investigate the statistics of turbulence with greater accuracy. Thus, the fluid physics of three different turbulent boundary layers are discussed. These are a turbulent boundary layer without heat transfer, a turbulent boundary layer on a heated wall, and an adiabatic supersonic turbulent boundary layer at Mach number 1.8. The incompressible turbulent boundary layer study focused on the two-point correlation and the anisotropy. The compressible turbulent boundary layers study, that is, the low Mach number turbulent boundary layer with strong heat transfer and the supersonic turbulent boundary layer, is concerned with the strong Reynolds analogy, Van Driest transformation, and the applicability of Morkovin's hypothesis. Large eddy simulation is applied to an example discrete hole film cooling configuration. The computational domain included the coolant supply tube as well as the main mixing region. A tube L/D of 8 and an injection angle of 35 degrees was employed for two different simulations: one was with a blowing ratio of 0.5, and the other was with a blowing ratio of 0.362.

Book The MEMS Handbook

Download or read book The MEMS Handbook written by Mohamed Gad-el-Hak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 1386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolution is well underway. Our understanding and utilization of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are growing at an explosive rate with a worldwide market approaching billions of dollars. In time, microdevices will fill the niches of our lives as pervasively as electronics do right now. But if these miniature devices are to fulfill their mammoth potential, today's engineers need a thorough grounding in the underlying physics, modeling techniques, fabrication methods, and materials of MEMS. The MEMS Handbook delivers all of this and more. Its team of authors-unsurpassed in their experience and standing in the scientific community- explore various aspects of MEMS: their design, fabrication, and applications as well as the physical modeling of their operations. Designed for maximum readability without compromising rigor, it provides a current and essential overview of this fledgling discipline.

Book Distributed Turbulent Flow Control by MEMS Integrated With Neural Networks

Download or read book Distributed Turbulent Flow Control by MEMS Integrated With Neural Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed new fabrication techniques that can allow the formerly incompatible CMOS and MEMS devices to be integrated onto a single chip. This achievement leads to the M3 system, which consists of monolithically integrated sensor-logics-actuator. The M3 system can be used to control the wall streaks in a turbulent boundary. Experimentation work revealed and solved many of the problems associated with having electronic devices work in close proximity with each other and is progressing on the efforts to develop a control system using a neural network logic. Implementation of the network as well as a more general, fully adaptive neural network onto electronic circuitry has been accomplished. Finally, CFD studies have been performed which reveals and explains the mechanisms at work in the interaction between an oscillating flap and the turbulent boundary layer.
