Book excerpt: Computer simulation sawing programs were used to study the sawing of mathematical models of hardwood logs by the live sawing and three 4-sided sawing methods. One of the 4-sided methods simulated 'grade sawing' by sawing wach successive board from the log face with the highest potential grade. Logs from 10 through 28 inches in diameter were sawn. In addition, a refinement in the live sawing called live rip, in which center-sawn boards are ripped to increase value, was studied. Results generally indicate that all of the 4-sided methods studied gave similar lumber values. Live sawing was better than the 4-sided methods with good logs but inferior for 10- and 12-inch logs with large defective cores. Live sawing followed by ripping produced the highest lumber values in almost all cases. (Author).

Sawmill production managers often find it hard to tell what sawing pattern will yield the most. If sample logs are sawed in one sawing pattern, they cannot be reassembled and sawed again in a different pattern. And if a new sample of logs is used for each new sawing pattern, it is hard to tell if differences in yield are due to the sawing patterns or are due to natural differences between the logs in the samples. The huge variety of wood species and wood-based composites allows a wide scope of creative and esthetic alternatives to materials with higher environmental impacts during production, use and disposal. Quality of wood is influenced by the genetic and environmental factors. One of the emerging uses of wood are building and construction applications. Modern building and construction practices would not be possible without use of wood or wood-based composites. The use of composites enables using wood of lower quality for the production of materials with engineered properties for specific target applications. Even more, the utilization of such reinforcing particles as carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose enables development of a new generation of composites with even better properties. The positive aspect of decomposability of waste wood can turn into the opposite when wood or wood-based materials are exposed to weathering, moisture oscillations, different discolorations, and degrading organisms. Protective measures are therefore unavoidable for many outdoor applications. Resistance of wood against different aging factors is always a combined effect of toxic or inhibiting ingredients on the one hand, and of structural, anatomical, or chemical ways of excluding moisture on the other.
