Le modèle physique de référence est le modèle 3D, mais au vu de son important coût de calcul, il est intéressant de disposer de modèles plus simples en 1D, 2D ou 2.5D, que l'on peut utiliser dans des zones adéquates du fleuve, en fonction de sa topographie et de sa bathymétrie. Ainsi, à partir du modèle 3D basé sur les équations instationnaires et incompressibles de Navier-Stokes, des modèles plus simples sont dérivés par projection par formulations faibles du problème 3D. On obtient ainsi un modèle en 1D, écrit sur la courbe médiane de la surface libre du fleuve, ainsi que deux modèles en 2D, le 2D-vertical écrit sur la surface longitudinale médiane du fleuve et le 2D-horizontal écrit sur la surface libre. Enfin on définit un modèle en quasi-3D, le modèle 2.5D, écrit dans la somme des espaces 2D-vertical et 2D-horizontal. Tous ces modèles prennent en compte la géométrie du fleuve et fournissent une vitesse tridimensionnelle ainsi que la pression, qui n'est pas supposée hydrostatique mais qui est une inconnue entière du problème. En outre, on définit et justifie un estimateur de modèles, entre le modèle 3D et chacune de ses approximations en 1D, 2D et 2.5D. Cet estimateur calcule l'erreur entre le modèle 3D et son approximation, et donne ainsi une indication sur la qualité des résultats obtenus à partir des modèles 1D, 2D ou 2.5D, dans leurs zones respectives de calcul. Tous ces modèles hydrodynamiques sont implémentés dans des codes d'éléments finis, écrits en C++. Enfin, ils sont couplés numériquement à l'aide de l'estimateur de modèles.

Plusieurs techniques d’optimisation sont présentées afin d’améliorer son utilisation : répartir la masse de calcul de façon adaptée, et privilégier le travail des processeurs vis-à-vis des communications réseaux pénalisantes.Des méthodes numériques sur maillage non structuré composé de tétraèdres sont choisies pour réaliser la simulation directe d’écoulements multi-fluides avec capture d’interface. Nous adoptons une approche unique qui rappelle celle du Multiscale, dans laquelle la condensation d’une fonction Bulle pyramidale est utilisée comme technique universelle de stabilisation.Les équations de Navier-Stokes incompressible sont résolues par une méthode éléments finis mixtes à interpolation P1+/P1. Un schéma temporel d’Euler implicite est appliqué, en association avec un algorithme de Newton pour linéariser le problème.Les interfaces sont capturées par une technique Level Set à interpolation continue P1 qui consiste à résoudre une équation de transport stabilisée par la condensation d’une Bulle (Residual-Free Bubbles). Le couplage avec une équation d’Hamilton-Jacobi permet de réinitialiser la fonction Level Set au court de son transport. La comparaison avec une méthode Galerkin discontinue proche du Volume of Fluid montre que le Level Set se distingue par sa simplicité et l’absence de diffusion numérique.Enfin, les simulations numériques sont validées par plusieurs cas test reconnus.

Dans la troisième partie, nous avons parallélisé notre code et calculé la solution dans des réseaux de grandes tailles, aidant à la recherche des lois d'échelles.

L'autre stratégie est basée sur une approche entièrement couplée dans laquelle le système entier est résolu simultanément. Le but de la thèse de doctorat est le développement d'un schéma implicite en volumes finis pour la modélisation numérique d'écoulements multicomposants monophasiques et diphasiques avec transport réactif en milieu poreux.Deux nouveaux modules de transport réactif seront implémentés dans DuMuX, un simulateur libre pour les problèmes d'écoulements et de transport dans les milieuw poreux. Des simulations numériques bi et tridimensionnels comprenant des benchmarks et du calcul haute performance, seront effectuées pour valider les modules.

On the other hand this volume is also, and probably more so, a Textbook that fills a gap in the field of unsaturated flow. Many treatises on the subject present the theory in its different aspects. Hardly any explain in details how the different pieces can be put together to address realistic problems at the basin scale. The various invited contributions to the ARW were structured in a subject progression much as chapters are organized in a book. The intent of the ARW was to assess the current state of knowledge in "Unsaturated Flow" and its use in "Hydrologic Modeling Practice". In a sense the interest in fundamentals of unsaturated flow in this ARW was not just for the sake of knowledge but also and primarily for the sake of action. Can such fundamental knowledge be utilized for better management of the water resource? was the basic question.

The chapters synthesize what is known about these seas, yet much still is to be learnt. It is hoped that this collection of information will serve as a springboard for future, much needed, studies in this fascinating, diverse region, and will stimulate comparative analyses with other subarctic and arctic basins of the world. The Canadian Inland Seas are the only remnants, albeit cold, of the ancient cratonic marine basins which occupied central North America throughout the Paleozoic and part of the Mesozoic. Precambrian rocks and gently dipping Paleozoic sedimentary rocks underlie the seas. The area is also close to the centers of Pleistocene glaciations. The coastal areas represent an emerged landscape of the post-glacial Tyrrell sea, as the region has been isostatically uplifted to about 350 meters since glacial times. A total of 56 fish species inhabit Hudson Bay and James Bay. Seals, whales and one of the largest and southernmost populations of polar bears inhabit the seas as well. The coastal areas are important habitats for migratory bird populations, some of which migrate from as far away as Southern Argentina.The ostic environment has preserved these regions relatively unchanged by man, with only a major harbour at Churchill, Manitoba, which is active for part of the year, and a second large, rail-terminal settlement in the south at Moosonee, Ontario. A few, small, native Indian and Inuit villages dot the coasts. The seas are being affected indirectly by the damming of rivers for the generation of hydroelectric power, and by drainage diversions towards the man-made reservoirs. A major project is being completed in Quebec east of James Bay, but other rivers in Ontario and Manitoba have been dammed as well. Undoubtedly freshwater is one of the more important resources of the area, however its exploitation needs careful thought because of the possible long-range effects on the environment, particularly the coastal marshes, which sustain much of the eastern American intercontinental migratory avifauna. Other resources occur in the regions, primarily minerals and perhaps petroleum. For the most part however, such resources remain to be discovered.

This book presents accessible summaries of key results of this research. The ten chapters of the book are written by leading contributors to the programme, and cover aspects of the physical, sedimentological, chemical and biological processes controlling fluxes between river catchments and coastal seas in temporate environments. Major overarching themes for all of the chapters include the persistence, storage, degradation and transport of pollutants from catchment to coastal sea, and an emphasis on the relevance of research for river and coastal water quality management.
