Book Numerical Simulation of the Filling and Curing Stages in Reaction Injection Moulding

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of the Filling and Curing Stages in Reaction Injection Moulding written by Rui Igreja and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, language: English, abstract: (Thesis in pdf available here: http: //goo.gl/EZzlT6 and here: http: //hdl.handle.net/10773/2419) Commonly used methods for injection moulding simulation involve a considerable number of simplifications, leading to a significant reduction of the computational effort but, in some cases also to limitations. In this work, Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM) simulations are performed with a minimum of simplifications, by using the general purpose CFD software package Ansys CFX, designed for numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat and mass transfer. The Ansys CFX's homogeneous multiphase flow model, which is generally considered to be the appropriate choice for modelling free surface flows where the phases are completely stratified and the interface is well defined, is shown to be unable to model the filling process correctly. This problem is overcome through the implementation of the inhomogeneous model in combination with the free-slip boundary condition for the air phase. The cure reaction is implemented in the code as a transport equation for an additional scalar variable, with a source term. Various transient and advection schemes are tested to determine which ones produce the most accurate results. Finally, the mass conservation, momentum, cure and energy equations are implemented all together to simulate the simultaneous filling and curing processes present in the RIM process. The obtained numerical results show a good global accuracy when compared with other available numerical and experimental results, though considerably long computation times are required to perform the simulations.

Book Process Modeling in Composites Manufacturing

Download or read book Process Modeling in Composites Manufacturing written by Suresh G. Advani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-08-28 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a wealth of literature on modeling and simulation of polymer composite manufacturing processes. However, existing books neglect to provide a systematic explanation of how to formulate and apply science-based models in polymer composite manufacturing processes. Process Modeling in Composites Manufacturing, Second Edition provides tangible methods to optimize this process — and it remains a proven, powerful introduction to the basic principles of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Includes tools to develop an experience base to aid in modeling a composite manufacturing process Building on past developments, this new book updates the previous edition’s coverage of process physics and the state of modeling in the field. Exploring research derived from experience, intuition, and trial and error, the authors illustrate a state-of-the-art understanding of mass, momentum, and energy transfer during composites processing. They introduce computer-based solutions using MATLAB® code and flow simulation-based analysis, which complement closed-form solutions discussed in the book, to help readers understand the role of different material, geometric, and process parameters. This self-contained primer provides an introduction to modeling of composite manufacturing processes for anyone working in material science and engineering, industrial, mechanical, and chemical engineering. It introduces a scientific basis for manufacturing, using solved example problems which employ calculations provided in the book. End-of-chapter questions and problems and fill in the blanks sections reinforce the content in order to develop the experience base of the manufacturing, materials, and design engineer or scientists, as well as seniors and first-year graduate students.

Book Flow Induced Alignment in Composite Materials

Download or read book Flow Induced Alignment in Composite Materials written by T.D. Papathanasiou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-10-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of aligning short fibres in a fibre-reinforced material is to improve the mechanical properties of the resulting composite. Aligning the fibres, generally in a preferred direction, allows them to contribute as much as possible to reinforcing the material.Flow induced alignment in composite materials details, in a single volume, the science, processing, applications, characterisation and properties of composite materials reinforced with short fibres that have been orientated in a preferred direction by flows arising during processing. The topics discussed include fibre alignment and materials rheology; processes that can produce fibre alignment in polymeric, liquid crystal polymeric, and metallic composites; materials characterization and mechanical properties; and modelling of processes and materials properties. The technology of fibre-reinforced composites is continually evolving and this book provides timely and much needed information about this important class of engineering materials. The bookis an essential reference work for industry and an indispensable guide for the research worker, advanced student and materials scientist.
