Book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 116Cd and 82Se and Calorimeter Simulations for the SuperNEMO Experiment

Download or read book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 116Cd and 82Se and Calorimeter Simulations for the SuperNEMO Experiment written by Zachary John Liptak and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the NEMO-3 detector, 410.4 g of 116Cd with a total exposure of 1.65 kg· y and 932 g of 82Se with a total exposure of 3.75 kg· y were used to measure the half-life of two-neutrino double beta decay (2[nu][beta][beta]) to the ground states of 116Sn and 82Kr and to place a lower limit on the neutrinoless double becay decay (0[nu][beta][beta]) to the same ground states. Under the single-states dominance hypothesis, the 2[nu][beta][beta] half-lives are found to be T 1/2(116Cd) = (2.90 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.15(syst)×1019 yr and T 1/2(82Se) = [10.62±0.11(stat)±0.56(syst)]×1019 yr. 0[nu][beta][beta] is excluded to 90% confidence level at T 1/2 ≥ 1.12 × 1023 yr for 116Cd and T 1/2 ≥ 3.90 × 1023 yr for 82Se. These half-lives correspond to effective Majorana neutrino masses of m ≤ (4.33 - 5.54) eV and m ≤ (2.28 - 2.82) eV, respectively, in the light Majorana exchange mechanism.

Book Modeling Beta Decay Spectra to Analyze the Sensitivity of a Neutrino Mass Experiment

Download or read book Modeling Beta Decay Spectra to Analyze the Sensitivity of a Neutrino Mass Experiment written by Talia E. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Project 8 experiment aims to measure the electron neutrino mass by obtaining and analyzing [beta] spectra from tritium decay. Using an inferential model of the experiment's anticipated data, I evaluate its projected sensitivity to certain parameters of interest. I focus on the precision and accuracy with which Project 8 can expect to resolve the [beta]-decay spectrum's endpoint in an upcoming stage of the experiment. I also present an initial prediction of Project 8's eventual expected sensitivity to the electron neutrino mass. This analysis involved generating and analyzing [beta]-decay spectral data using a model implemented in Stan, a platform for Bayesian statistical inference. The sensitivity analysis was designed to account for the anticipated distribution of results (mass and endpoint measurements) produced by the potential variation in a number of physical and experimental parameters. In addition, the method used here allows for a calibration of the consequences of inferences and decisions made in reaching those results. I find that, using one year of Project 8 Phase II data, the T2 endpoint can be resolved within a 13.7 eV window (90% C.I.) with 62% coverage (or accuracy), corresponding to a 4.1 eV posterior standard deviation. Preliminarily, using one year of Phase IV data, the electron neutrino mass can be resolved within a 0.051 eV window (90% C.I.) with 56% coverage. I also outline a way that model-based sensitivity procedures and calibration of inference can be extended to the neutrino mass hierarchy problem.

Book Towards a Precise Energy Calibration of the CUORE Double Beta Decay Experiment

Download or read book Towards a Precise Energy Calibration of the CUORE Double Beta Decay Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass of the neutrino may hold the key to many problems in cosmology and astrophysics. The observation of neutrino oscillations shows that neutrinos have mass, which was something that was not accounted for in the Standard Model of particle physics. This thesis covers topics relating to measuring the value of neutrino mass directly using bolometers. The first section will discuss the neutrino mass and different experiments for measuring the mass using bolometers. The mass of the neutrino can be measured directly from -decay or inferred from observation of neutrinoless double beta decay (0). In this work I present Monte Carlo and analytic simulation of the MARE experiment including, pile-up and energy resolution effects. The mass measurement limits of a micro-calorimeter experiments as it relates to the quantity of decays measured is provided. A similar simulation is preformed for the HolMES experiment. The motivation is to determine the sensitivity of such experiments and the detector requirements to reach the goal sensitivity. Another possible method for determining the neutrino mass is to use neutrinoless double beta decay. The second section will cover the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) detector calibration system (DCS). CUORE is a neutrinoless double beta decay (0) experiment with an active mass of 206 kg of 130Te. The detector consists of 988 TeO2 bolometers operating at 10 mK. The signature of 0 decay is an excess of events at the Q-value of 2528 keV. Understanding the energy response is critical for event identification, but this presents many challenges. Calibration is necessary to associate a known energy from a with a voltage pulse from the detector. The DCS must overcome many design challenges. The calibration source must be placed safely and reliable within the detector. The temperature of the detector region of the cryostat must not be changed during calibration. To achieve this calibration sources must be cooled before before introducing them to the detector region. The highest acceptable temperature of the calibration sources are estimated using the Stephan-Boltzmann Law. The ability to cool the calibration sources to these temperatures was measured in several tests. The first test established the force required to cool the calibration sources within the time allotted. The second test established the time frame required for cooling the calibration sources to the required temperature. A model for ensuring the calibration sources are below the required temperature and recommended procedure for cooling the calibration sources is provided.

Basharina-Freshville and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's most precise half-life measurement of T 2nu_1/2 = [7.02 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.46(syst)] × 10 18 years has been made for the 2\nu\beta\beta decay of 100Mo using data from 6.9kg collected with the NEMO3 detector over 1471 days. The 2\nu nuclear matrix element has been extracted using T 2nu_1/2 and is M 2\nu = 0.126 ± 0.004. The 0\nu\beta\beta search yielded a limit on the half-life of T 0\nu_1/2 1/1 > 1.1 × 10 24 years at the 90% CL, corresponding to a limit on the effective Majorona mass of \langle M\nu e\rangle

Book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study the sensitivity of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity are discussed and compared, and the formulas and parameters used in the sensitivity estimates are provided. Assuming a background rate of 10−2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE will have a 1 [sigma] sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}}(1[sigma]) = 1.6x 1026 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 41-95 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64[sigma], which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}(1.64[sigma] }) = 9.5x1025 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range in the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.
