University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The performance of a communication system having almost the same spectral efficiency as a trellis coded modulation (TCM) system with r = 2/3 convolutional encoding and 8-ary phase-shift keying (8-PSK) modulation is investigated. TCM is a common solution to the problem of adding forward error correction (FEC) coding without an attendant increase in channel bandwidth. The primary drawback to TCM is that the achievable coding gain is limited by the maximum practical number of states in the convolutional encoder. The alternative system considered uses (63, 37) Reed-Solomon (RS) encoding. The six-bit symbols at the output of the Reed-Solomon encoder undergo serial-to-parallel conversion to two three-bit symbols, which are then independently transmitted on the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) component of the carrier using 8-ary biorthogonal keying (8-BOK). This system has a null-to-null bandwidth of 0.993Rb, which is 0.7% smaller than TCM with r = 2/3 convolutional encoding and 8-PSK modulation. The two waveforms are compared for the relatively benign case where additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is the only noise present as well as when pulse-noise interference (PNI) is present. It was found that both systems have almost the same performance in AWGN, but with PNI the alternative system has better performance.

The codes in use are the recursive Ungerboeck convolutional codes and they are combined with Quadrature Amplitude Modulation over an Additive White Gaussian Noise channel. The search of optimum mappings is first treated and the question of having some smaller punctured constellations from a larger one is considered. Performance evaluation of TCM codes is provided according to geometric conditions that the mappings must stand in order to reduce the complexity of the calculation. Computation of transfer function is provided and this leads to a theoretical analysis for probability expressions of even, symbol and bit errors. A second order term expression is also elaborated which takes into consideration both error events on the trellis and errors on parallel transitions. Computer simulations have been run along with High Density Television transmission parameters. The results are presented and discussed. The use of error control coding techniques makes a great improvement in performance. For this purpose, Reed-Solomon codes have been concatenated with TCM codes, and gone through interleaving to ensure a higher error recovery efficiency.
