Book Coastal Watershed Management

Download or read book Coastal Watershed Management written by A. Fares and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal watersheds differ from others by their unique features, including proximity to the ocean, weather and rainfall patterns, subsurface features, and land covers. Land use changes and competing needs for valuable water and land resources are especially more distinctive to such watersheds. This book covers recent research relevant to coastal watersheds. It addresses the impact of a stream’s chemical, biological, and sediment pollutants on the quality of the receiving waters, such as estuaries, bays, and near-shore waters. The contents of the book can be divided into three sections; a) overview of hydrological modelling, b) water quality assessment, and c) watershed management. This book differs from other hydrology books by dealing with coastal watersheds which are characterized by their unique features: including weather and rainfall patterns, subsurface characteristics, and land use and cover. In addition to academia, the book should be of interest to organizations concerned with watershed management, such as local and federal governments and environmental groups. Overall, the book is expected to satisfy a great need toward understanding and managing critical areas in many parts of the world.

Download or read book Troubled Waters written by Stephen J. Culver and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book communicates coastal geology such that the reader gets a better understanding of how scientists work and how scientific knowledge is acquired and how it progresses. It presents the human side of geologic research, including missteps, in this case, research on coastal change of the recent past, the present, and the near future. The audience for this volume is the general public, coastal managers, politicians, and decision makers in general, in the coastal realm. But the implications of this work with regard to future climate change and human responses are relevant globally.

Book Simulated Hydrologic Responses of the Quashnet River Stream aquifer System to Proposed Ground water Withdrawals Cape Cod Massachusetts

Download or read book Simulated Hydrologic Responses of the Quashnet River Stream aquifer System to Proposed Ground water Withdrawals Cape Cod Massachusetts written by Paul M. Barlow and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ... The purposes of this report are to describe (1) the hydrologic characteristics of the Quashnet River stream aquifer system and (2) the responses of the system to proposed ground water withdrawals simulated by use of a numerical model of ground water flow; these reponses to pumping are assessed in terms of drawdowns in the altitude of the water table, streamflow depletions, and sources of water to the river and the simulated supply well; in this report, the Quashnet river stream aquifer system is defined as that area extending approximately from the Mashpee River on the east to the Coonamessett River on the west and from Nantucket Sound to approximately 1 mile north of Johns Pond; this report is based on ground and surface water data collected during the study and compiled from engineers' reports and USGS ground and surface water data bases; physical characteristics of the Quashnet and Childs Rivers (streamflow, stream velocity, width and depth), surface altitude of Johns Pond, and hydraulic heads within the basin were measured from January 1990 through September 1991 ...

Book Saline Groundwater Surface Water Interaction in Coastal Lowlands

Download or read book Saline Groundwater Surface Water Interaction in Coastal Lowlands written by J.R. Delsman and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal zones are among the world's most densely populated and economically important areas, but these factors put pressure on the often limited available freshwater resources. Global change will undoubtedly increase this pressure through the combined effects of increased population, economic development, rising sea levels, increased evapotranspiration, over-extraction and the salinization of coastal aquifers, decreasing river discharges, and accelerating land subsidence. Saline groundwater exfiltration is a common problem in the coastal zone of the Netherlands, but the hydrological processes and physiographic factors that affect this are not fully understood. The research presented in this book aims to identify the processes and physiographic factors controlling the spatial variability and temporal dynamics of the exfiltration of saline groundwater to surface water, and hence the contribution of saline groundwater to surface water salinity. Topics covered include a paleo-hydrogeological model simulation of the Holocene evolution of groundwater salinity as a result of paleo-geographic changes; surface water salinity dynamics in a densely-drained lowland catchment; hydrograph separation in an agricultural catchment; observations of heads, flow, solute concentration and temperature to constrain a detailed, variable-density groundwater flow and transport model; and a model to simulate the salinity dynamics of exfiltrating groundwater to support operational water management of freshwater resources in coastal lowlands. The book further outlines the implications of these findings for freshwater management in the Netherlands. The book demonstrates that the salinity of groundwater exfiltrating in polders in the Netherlands, and hence surface water salinity, varies on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
