Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and The Dovekeepers comes a soul-searching story about a young woman struggling to redefine herself and the power of love, family, and fate. Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend’s future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt. What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion—from dark suffering to true happiness—a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls—including an angel who’s been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night. Here is a character you will fall in love with, so believable and real and endearing, that she captures both the ache of loneliness and the joy of finding yourself at last. For anyone who’s ever been a hurt teenager, for every mother of a daughter who has lost her way, Faithful is a roadmap. Alice Hoffman’s “trademark alchemy” (USA TODAY) and her ability to write about the “delicate balance between the everyday world and the extraordinary” (WBUR) make this an unforgettable story. With beautifully crafted prose, Alice Hoffman spins hope from heartbreak in this profoundly moving novel.

Book excerpt: The Counter-Cultural Move from Accumulation to Abundance Why is it so hard to find the contented, satisfied life? What deep hungers drive our purchasing habits, accumulation, and consumer lifestyle? Satisfied is for those drowning in debt, but also those getting farther and farther ahead financially. It is for those who have forgotten who they are and mistakenly equate their self-worth with their net worth. It is for those who are crippled by comparison. It is for those with full closets and empty souls. Satisfied provides an inspiring and transformative vision for living a deeply contented life in our consumer-driven culture. "Jeff Manion's voice is such a wise, clear, helpful voice, and I'm so thankful for the timely and challenging invitation he's issued in these pages. I'm inspired to live more richly with fewer things, and to pursue gratitude and generosity with more intention." - Shauna Niequist, author of Bread and Wine

Download or read book Simply Christian written by N. T. Wright and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is justice fair? Why are so many people pursuing spirituality? Why do we crave relationship? And why is beauty so beautiful? N. T. Wright argues that each of these questions takes us into the mystery of who God is and what he wants from us. For two thousand years Christianity has claimed to answer these mysteries, and this renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop shows that it still does today. Like C. S. Lewis did in his classic Mere Christianity, Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader is starting from ground zero with no predisposition to and perhaps even some negativity toward religion in general and Christianity in particular. His goal is to describe Christianity in as simple and accessible, yet hopefully attractive and exciting, a way as possible, both to say to outsides ÔYou might want to look at this further,Ö and to say to insiders ÔYou may not have quite understood this bit clearly yet.Ö

Book Faithful and Fearless

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Fainsod Katzenstein
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780691010083
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Faithful and Fearless written by Mary Fainsod Katzenstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riots and demonstrations, the lifeblood of American social and political protest in the 1960s, are now largely a historical memory. But Mary Fainsod Katzenstein argues that protest has not disappeared--it has simply moved off the streets into the country's core institutions. As a result, conflicts over sexual harassment, affirmative action, and the rights of women, gays and lesbians, and people of color now touch us more than ever in our daily lives, whether we are among those seeking change or those threatened by its prospects. No one is more aware of this than women demanding change from within the United States military and the American Catholic church. Women in uniform are deeply patriotic and women active in the church are devoted to their callings. Yet Katzenstein shows that these women often feel isolated and demeaned, confronted by challenges as subtle as condescension and as blatant as career obstruction. Although faithful to their institutions, many have proved fearless in their attempts to reshape them. Drawing on interviews with over a hundred women in the military and the church--including senior officers, combat pilots, lay activists, and nuns--this book gives voice to the struggles and vision of these women as they have moved protest into the mainstream. Katzenstein shows why the military and the church, similarly hierarchical and insistent on obedience, have come to harbor deeply different forms of protest. She demonstrates that women in the military have turned to the courts and Congress, whereas feminists in the church have used "discursive" protests--writing, organizing workshops and conferences--to rethink in radical ways the meanings of faith and justice. These different strategies, she argues, reflect how the law regulates the military but leaves the church alone. Faithful and Fearless calls our attention to protest within institutions as a new stage in the history both of feminism and of social movements in America. The book is an inspiring account of strength in the face of adversity and a groundbreaking contribution to the study of American feminism, social protest, and the historical development of institutions in American society.

Book I m Faithful But I m Not Religious

Download or read book I m Faithful But I m Not Religious written by Edward Sinclair and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface to I'm Faithful, But I'm Not Religious: "Some of my opinions have some basis. Most are my opinions just because they are my opinions, and I'm not particularly concerned with whether or not they have any basis." that having been said, Ed Sinclair offers opinions on just about anything and everything. For example: "Doing silly things only becomes problematic when doing so ceases to be a tribute to a good memory and, instead, becomes religiously institutionalized, routinized, regulated. I've said it before, and I'll say it again-religion has no place among the spiritually faithful. At least, that's my opinion."

Book Tired Hungry and Kinda Faithful

Download or read book Tired Hungry and Kinda Faithful written by Peyton Garland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For I know the plans I have for—” No doubt, you know that Jeremiah 29:11 is all about a promising future for the believer. But what about Jeremiah 29:14, which tells us God will drive his children into a treacherous exile—the very place he wants to be found? How can exile offer hope? Why would a good God force his beloved into life’s wastelands? Often, our Christian bubbles water down the answer to surviving on life’s grim, bland manna, but what if the wilderness isn’t as draining and barren as we thought? What if we are called to exile’s supposed desolation to, instead, discover God’s vibrant works in the most impossible situations? If you are juggling spiritual and physical hunger, exhaustion, and a mediocre faith that constantly thirsts for more of God’s true nature, I invite you to traverse both lush and lacking terrains as we discover an even brighter, more real picture of God’s goodness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faithful to the Future examines the true nature of Christian Tradition and particularly how it implies a fidelity not only to the past but to the future as well - tradition appears to be inseparable from creativity and reform. Congar's sense of the future and his conviction that something very important is happening in history led him to re-emphasize forgotten dimensions of Christian tradition, especially those that value the human person. When Congar reflected on Church authority and how it is best exercised, he was not thinking about a power that curtails freedom. Seeking to rediscover what is specific to Christianity, he described authority as a reality that is at the service of growth, where paying attention to the unknown and the unexpected is of the utmost importance. Congar was one of the greatest artisans of Vatican II and his writings are characterized by the urgent call for the reforms made necessary by a changing world, and by an understanding of catholicity - a sense of the Church that is not sectarian, but that lives and thinks "according to the whole". This volume explores the four themes that are prominent in Congar's writings, namely tradition, reform, catholicity and authority. The book does not assume a detailed knowledge of Congar's writings but addresses a difficulty that is frequently encountered in the present time - no one better than Yves Congar has shown that the Church is not a "system".

Book Faithful Living

  • Release : 2022-01-17
  • ISBN : 1639039988

Download or read book Faithful Living written by Donald R. Ruth and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I write this book, the world has been shaken by a horrible pandemic, namely COVID-19. The initial impacts of this dreadful disease were first seen in America in early 2020. As of today, the COVID-19 death toll in America is nearing six hundred thousand. In addition to the tremendous loss of life, the economy was virtually brought to a standstill because of business closures that were made necessary to stop or limit the spread of this disease. As a result, many people found themselves facing a daily struggle to remain safe while yet trying to provide for themselves and their families. Though this book was not written to address faithful living from a COVID-19 perspective, I felt led to share about faithfulness, but from a broader perspective. Having been raised in a family that did not have very much in the way of finances, my parents, who were both strong Christians, demonstrated to me what faithfulness looked like, especially in the face of adversity. Hence my title Faithful Living: Honoring God through Persistence and Faith during Trying Times. They, to me, are the epitome of the title of this book.
