Book Numerical Analysis of the Seismic Behavior of Earth Dams

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of the Seismic Behavior of Earth Dams written by Yousef Parish and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08-23 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with an important and complex issue in geotechnical and earthquake engineering, which concerns the influence of both plasticity and pore water pressure on the influence of the seismic response to real earthquake records. Analyses are carried using the software FLAC3D. The book includes three parts: The first chapter presents a literature review of research on earth dams. It presents observation during earthquake loading, the different methods of seismic analysis of earth dams, such as the simplified methods, the empirical methods, the equivalent-linear analyses and the non linear methods. The second chapter presents a numerical analysis of the seismic behaviour of earth dams. Analysis is conducted for the solid phase. It corresponds to the response of the dam before water filling. The third chapter presents a numerical analysis of the influence of the water-skeleton interaction on the response of earth dams to seismic loading. Analysis is conducted first under undrained condition, which corresponds to a simplified analysis of the response of the dam.

Book Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment

Download or read book Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment written by Jean-Jacques Fry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment is the outcome of a three year cooperation program between CFBR (Comite Francais des Barrages et Reservoirs or French Committee on Large dams) and JCOLD (Japan Commission on Large Dams), and focusses on the dynamic behavior of concrete and embankment dams analyzed based on acceleration records of the JCOLD data base. The book covers a broad range of topics, including simplified and detailed methods of dynamic analysis for the seismic response of concrete and embankment dams compared with measured behavior. The response of embankment dams subjected to a 1.0 g foundation acceleration time history is computed by several analytical methods and compared. The modelling of stress-strain behavior of compacted soils for seismic stability analysis of earth-fill dams and its application for a failed earthfill dam is described. The cracking of the face slab of four faced rockfill dams during earthquakes is analyzed. The seismic behavior of concrete arch dams is discussed by the comparison of numerical and experimental results. Displacement-based seismic assessment of concrete dams is presented. Finally the book contains a comparison between the Japanese and French design criteria of gates and a comparison of the analysis of gates and field measurements. Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment will be useful to professional and academics involved or interested in dam engineering.

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Probabilistic Stability Analysis of an Earth Dam Using Field Data

Download or read book Probabilistic Stability Analysis of an Earth Dam Using Field Data written by Xiangfeng Guo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties of soil properties are widely encountered in the field of geotechnical engineering especially for earth dams which are constructed with earthen materials. In recent years, there is an increasing need, motivated by the deficiencies of the traditional deterministic approach or guided by the national regulations such as in France, of accounting for these uncertainties for a safe assessment of large dams particularly in the framework of risk analysis studies. However, probabilistic analyses are still complex and not so easy to implement in practice due to the limited number of in-situ measurements, expensive computation efforts and lack of implementation of reliability methods in commercial simulation tools. Moreover, most of the previous studies are based on academic cases and hypothetic data. This work attempts to deal with the aforementioned issues by providing a probabilistic analysis study for the stability of a real earth dam using available field data. This study includes the following main elements: (1) definition of the soil variability by using the available measurements; (2) development of the deterministic models; (3-4) dam probabilistic analyses using the random-variables and random-fields approaches; (5) three-dimensional reliability analysis of the considered dam. Advanced reliability methods, such as the adaptive surrogate modelling, are introduced for the studied earth dam problem. This allows accurately estimating the dam failure probability and the safety factor statistics with a significantly reduced calculation time. In addition, some issues, that remain unknown or unclear in the field of the dam probabilistic analysis, are discussed (e.g. global sensitivity analysis of the soil hydraulic and shear strength parameters; performance survey of five reliability methods; simulation/comparison of three different kinds of random fields: generic (unconditional-stationary), conditional and nonstationary). The presented work, based on real measurements, could be a good supplement to the existing probabilistic studies of geo-structures. Readers will find useful information from the obtained results in order to better solve the practical geotechnical problems in a probabilistic framework.

This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk and reliability analysis is an area of growing importance in geotechnical engineering, where many variables have to be considered. Statistics, reliability modeling and engineering judgement are employed together to develop risk and decision analyses for civil engineering systems. The resulting engineering models are used to make probabilistic predictions, which are applied to geotechnical problems. Reliability & Statistics in Geotechnical Engineering comprehensively covers the subject of risk and reliability in both practical and research terms * Includes extensive use of case studies * Presents topics not covered elsewhere--spatial variability and stochastic properties of geological materials * No comparable texts available Practicing engineers will find this an essential resource as will graduates in geotechnical engineering programmes.

Download or read book Seismic Reliability of Dam Structures written by Sindhuja Sundaresan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability analysis of structures implies the estimate of the limit state probabilities of a structure under adverse/environmental loading. Most important aspect of seismic reliability analysis is identification of all uncertainties, methods for modeling and analysis, analytical formulation of the limit state surface and integration of probability density function. In the seismic reliability analysis of the dam structure, the limit state probability of the structure is integrated with the seismic risk of the site. In this study, Coulee concrete gravity dam structure is modeled and seismic reliability of the dam structure in the presence of full reservoir and empty reservoir are analyzed. The dam-reservoir and reservoir-foundation interactions are considered in the study. The transient analysis is done by considering El Centro and Loma Prieta earthquake record. The randomness of ground motion, uncertainties in its occurrence, definition of its intensity parameters are considered in seismic reliability analysis. The material uncertainty of the dam is included in the study.
