Book excerpt: This is a textbook devoted to mathematical programming algorithms and the mathematics needed to understand such algorithms. It was mainly written for economists, but the mathematics itself obviously has relevance for other disciplines. It is a textbook as well a~ in parts, a contribution to new knowledge. There is, accordingly, a broad ordering of climbing sophistication, the earlier chapters being purely for the student, the later chapters being more specialist and containing some element of novelty on certain points. The book is edited in five parts. Part I deals with elementary matrix operations, matrix inversion, determinants, etc. Part II is mainly devoted to linear programming. As far as students' readability is concerned, these two parts are elementary undergraduate material. However, I would claim, in particular with respect to linear programming, that I do things more efficiently than the standard textbook approach has it. This refers mainly to the search for a feasible solution i.e. Chapter 9, and to upper and lower limits, i.e. Chapter 10. I have also argued that the standard textbook treatment of degeneracy misses a relevant problem, namely that of accuracy. In short, I would invite anyone who has the task of writing or designing an LP-code, to first acquaint himself with my ideas. viii INTRODUCTION Parts III and IV are concerned with nonlinear programming.

Linear programming problems are referred to as optimization problems but the general term linear p- gramming remains. This can cause people unfamiliar with the subject to think that it is about programming in the sense of writing computer code. It isn’t. This workbook is about the beautiful mathematics underlying the ideas of optimizing linear functions subject to linear constraints and the algorithms to solve such problems. In particular, much of what we d- cuss is the mathematics of Simplex Algorithm for solving such problems, developed by George Dantzig in the late 1940s. The word program in linear programming is a historical artifact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 35 years now, George B. Dantzig's Simplex-Method has been the most efficient mathematical tool for solving linear programming problems. It is proba bly that mathematical algorithm for which the most computation time on computers is spent. This fact explains the great interest of experts and of the public to understand the method and its efficiency. But there are linear programming problems which will not be solved by a given variant of the Simplex-Method in an acceptable time. The discrepancy between this (negative) theoretical result and the good practical behaviour of the method has caused a great fascination for many years. While the "worst-case analysis" of some variants of the method shows that this is not a "good" algorithm in the usual sense of complexity theory, it seems to be useful to apply other criteria for a judgement concerning the quality of the algorithm. One of these criteria is the average computation time, which amounts to an anal ysis of the average number of elementary arithmetic computations and of the number of pivot steps. A rigid analysis of the average behaviour may be very helpful for the decision which algorithm and which variant shall be used in practical applications. The subject and purpose of this book is to explain the great efficiency in prac tice by assuming certain distributions on the "real-world" -problems. Other stochastic models are realistic as well and so this analysis should be considered as one of many possibilities.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is often considered as a body of knowledge that is essen tially independent of linguistic formulations, in the sense that, once the content of this knowledge has been grasped, there remains only the problem of professional ability, that of clearly formulating and correctly proving it. However, the question is not so simple, and P. Weingartner's paper (Language and Coding-Dependency of Results in Logic and Mathe matics) deals with some results in logic and mathematics which reveal that certain notions are in general not invariant with respect to different choices of language and of coding processes. Five example are given: 1) The validity of axioms and rules of classical propositional logic depend on the interpretation of sentential variables; 2) The language dependency of verisimilitude; 3) The proof of the weak and strong anti inductivist theorems in Popper's theory of inductive support is not invariant with respect to limitative criteria put on classical logic; 4) The language-dependency of the concept of provability; 5) The language dependency of the existence of ungrounded and paradoxical sentences (in the sense of Kripke). The requirements of logical rigour and consistency are not the only criteria for the acceptance and appreciation of mathematical proposi tions and theories.
