Book excerpt: The material in this work is focused on recent developments in research into the stress-strain behavior of geomaterials, with an emphasis on laboratory measurements, soil constitutive modeling and behavior of soil structures (such as reinforced soils, piles and slopes). The latest advancements in the field, such as the rate effect and dynamic behavior of both clay and sand, behavior of modified soils and soil mixtures, and soil liquefaction are addressed.

Book Multiphysical Testing of Soils and Shales

Download or read book Multiphysical Testing of Soils and Shales written by Lyesse Laloui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advancements in the experimental analysis of soils and shales have been achieved during the last few decades. Outstanding progress in the field has led to the theoretical development of geomechanical theories and important engineering applications. This book provides the reader with an overview of recent advances in a variety of advanced experimental techniques and results for the analysis of the behaviour of geomaterials under multiphysical testing conditions. Modern trends in experimental geomechanics for soils and shales are discussed, including testing materials in variably saturated conditions, non-isothermal experiments, micro-scale investigations and image analysis techniques. Six theme papers from leading researchers in experimental geomechanics are also included. This book is intended for postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners in fields where multiphysical testing of soils and shales plays a fundamental role, such as unsaturated soil and rock mechanics, petroleum engineering, nuclear waste storage engineering, unconventional energy resources and CO2 geological sequestration.

Book Simple Shear of an Undisturbed Soft Marine Clay in NGI and Torsional Shear Equipment

Download or read book Simple Shear of an Undisturbed Soft Marine Clay in NGI and Torsional Shear Equipment written by M. Talesnick and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of undrained, simple shear tests were performed on undisturbed, soft, marine clay from the continental slope of Israel in a direct simple shear device (NGI) and in a new torsional shear apparatus. The new apparatus is described, and the problematics of simple shear testing in both devices are discussed. Most previous torsional shear testing on clays reported in the literature has been performed on remolded specimens. In order to prepare specimens from undisturbed samples of the soft, marine clay, whose natural moisture content is close to the liquid limit, a special preparation technique was developed. A comparison of the stress-strain curves obtained in the two devices indicates higher stiffness and strength of the specimens tested in the torsional equipment; a similar observation has been reported in the literature from tests on sands and remolded clays. It is the authors' view that the main cause for the discrepancy is flexibility of the confining membrane in the NGI equipment. In view of the relevance of simple shear conditions to actual field problems, it appears important to further clarify this difference and to establish an accepted method for simple shear testing in the laboratory.
