Book excerpt: "A high utilization of emergency room services for non-emergent care such as simple laceration repair has resulted in overcrowded emergency room, prolonged patient wait times, and high associated costs. Evidence has shown that clients who require simple laceration repair can be treated in non-emergent care settings with topical tissue adhesive. To accommodate the increased demand for care, healthcare providers have to determine how patient care can be delivered most effectively in non-emergent health care facilities such as urgent care facilitates, retail clinic and ambulatory care clinics. One of the common presenting problems in an emergency room is traumatic wounds such as a laceration. Clients requiring simple laceration repair can and should be treated in urgent care facilitates with topical tissue adhesive. The purpose of this evidence based change of practice was to provide an educational program for the urgent care facility providers for the management of simple laceration with topical adhesive to standardize practice by increasing knowledge. The effectiveness of the evidence based change of practice project was determined by a statistical analysis and evaluation of findings and outcomes. The outcomes clearly suggest that implementation of the educational intervention is effective in standardizing the treatment of simple laceration repair with topical adhesive.
