Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Rules and Problems in Navigation The International Rules of the Road are not given, as they can be obtained free of cost on application to any Board of Local Inspectors of Steam Vessels. In making up the rules for working the problems, the author may have repeated himself several times, but it has been his experience in teaching navigation that this is necessary to make the student understand. All of the various problems are worked out in full, with no attempt to save figures or cut down the working in any way. It is recommended to the beginner 'that he names every thing as he goes along in his problems, as it will help to memorize. One of the greatest faults with navigators of to-day is their tendency to try and cut down figures in their problems. There is no excuse for this, as a man at sea has plenty of time to work his problems, and it has been this tendency for rule of thumb methods that has been the loss of many a ship. It is time enough to learn the short methods after you know the proper way, and have had several years of practical experience. There are many excellent books on the theory of navigation, but very few that the ordinary man can understand, and this book has been published with theory eliminated entirely. The books used in working the different problems ar Bowditch's American Practical Navigator, American Line of Position Tables, American Azimuth Tables and 1918 American Nautical Almanac. It is intended that this book shall be kept up to date, and the answers of the different problems for the coming years will be published in pamphlet form, and can be obtained by addressing the author enclosing 25 cents. It is hoped that this book will be a help to the reader, as the author has tried to make it in as plain language as possible. There, viewing the uncomfortable ladder and the unknown depths below, he ejaculated (in Baratarian): "Jehoshaphat! the durned thing's hollow!" This particularly unveracious yarn embodies a truth. Ships are, to most landsmen, a new and unfamiliar country; seamen are a peculiar people full of strange language and unexpected customs. And even those who voyage as passengers more or less frequently do not often see much of the working of the ship, and both officers and men are too busily engaged to spare time for explaining technicalities. In particular, it is a mystery to all but the seaman how, from the moment of losing touch with the land, a ship is piloted out of harbour, set fair on her course towards her destination, and located day by day on the chart until she reaches port again.
