This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before they emerged as Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed and recorded as Tom and Jerry, after the cat and mouse duo of animated comedy. The pair met at school in Queens, New York, in 1953 and shared an interest in folk revival music as it entered the popular consciousness. Inspired by the Everly Brothers, who merged country with rock and roll, young Paul and Art endeavored to write songs and arrange vocal harmonies. In 1957, they covered Everly Brothers’ “Hey, Schoolgirl” for Big Records when they were only 15 years old. “Hey, Schoolgirl in the second row / The teacher’s lookin’ over / So I got to whisper way down low,” the song goes. Tom and Jerry reached number 49 on the pop chart with that song. Another seven years went by before the pair recorded again. When Simon was working for a publisher to sell songs for recording, he introduced some of his own songs for consideration. He and Garfunkel auditioned, and, beyond expectation, Columbia Records offered them a recording deal. In 1964 they released Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.

Book DIS Book 1 The Journeys of Peter Simon and Beatrice Rankin

Download or read book DIS Book 1 The Journeys of Peter Simon and Beatrice Rankin written by Brian Dalton and published by Palmer Higgs Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2011-01-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Simon a Christian welfare worker is wracked by anger, guilt and fear induced by the reemergence of a childhood nightmare. He is beset by doubts and the futility of his vocation, even the loss of faith, when he meets Beatrice Rankin on a stretch of highway. Driving to her camp, they survive a plunge through the surface of a road hundreds of metres below ground. Trapped, they discover a huge bored hole down in the earth which is their only means of escape. Descending, they are nearly killed by blasting snow and ice. Finding a side passage they enter a bewildering and extensive series of tunnels. It is there that they meet an evil being: Elymas, Lord of Dis. They are told by Elymas that they are in Dis to face a series of trials set by a pact between God and Satan with no guarantee of survival. Peter is to protect Beatrice from harm and complications arise when Peter concludes that the experiences and dangers they face are from his imagination, sub-conscious or from situations in literature he has read. Beatrice is sceptical and thinks he is mad but comes to trust him. Another disturbing aspect of the journey for Peter Simon is that his underlying, largely suppressed fury, is unleashed in Dis. Episodes are connected by the childhood nightmare when he is out of control, particularly when Beatrice is threatened. As their friendship grows and blossoms into love, they fight against Elymas and the savagery of his evil world. Will Peter Simon and Beatrice Rankin survive?

Book excerpt: Paul Simon: An American Tune is the first full-scale survey of the career of one of the most honored musicians and songwriters in American history. Starting out as a teeny-bopper rocker in the late 1950s, Paul Simon went on to form the most influential pop duo of the 1960s—Simon & Garfunkel—and after their break-up in 1970, launch one of the most successful, varied, and surprising solo careers of our time. In Paul Simon: An American Tune, Cornel Bonca considers Simon’s vast trove of songs in the biographical and cultural context in which he wrote them: from the pop cultural revolution of the 1960s which Simon himself helped to create, the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s, the turn toward world music in the 1980s that gave the world the monumental Graceland, to the intimate personal turn his music took in the millennial era. Analyzing Simon’s albums one by one, often song by song, Bonca provides a deep and artful exploration of the work of one of today’s major songwriters. Offering a lucid and vivid portrait of an astonishing decades-long career, Paul Simon: An American Tune will interest a wide audience, from Simon fans to students and scholars of American popular culture.

Book excerpt: Simon de Montfort was a medieval leader of supreme ability and character. He came to England as a twenty-one-year-old who was recently knighted in France. He possessed a deed for an estate. Twenty-one-year-old king Henry accepted this title and befriended De Montfort. Soon he became his brother-in-law as he married Princess Eleanor. The issues of the thirteenth century were divine right of kings versus council participation. De Montfort, over time, became the leader of councils and tried to remain true to his feudal oath. These struggles occurred for over twenty-five years. Simon won it all, after a year and a half of being prime minister. He was killed in a foolish battle. Book Herbert A Simon

Download or read book Herbert A Simon written by Hunter Crowther-Heyck and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2005-04-27 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this informed and discerning study, Crowther-Heyck explores Simon's contributions to science and their influences on modern life and thought. For historians of science, social science, technology, and twentieth-century American intellectual and cultural history, this account of Herbert Simon's life and work provides a rich and valuable perspective. Rarely does the world see as versatile a figure as Herbert Simon. He was a Nobel laureate in economics; an accomplished political scientist; winner of a lifetime achievement award from the American Psychological Association; and founder of the department of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. In all his work in all these fields, he pursued a single goal - to create a science that could map the bounds of human reason and so enlarge its role in human affairs. Hunter Crowther-Heyck uses the career of this unique individual to examine the evolution of the social sciences after World War II, particularly Simon's creation of a new field, systems science, which joined together two distinct, powerful approaches to human behavior, the sciences of choice and control. Simon sought to develop methods by which human behavior: specifically human problem-solving, could be modeled and simulated. Regarding mind and machine as synonymous, Simon applied his models of human behavior to many other areas, from public administration and business management to artificial intelligence and the design of complex social and technical systems. In this informed and discerning study, Crowther-Heyck explores Simon's contributions to science and their influences on modern life and thought.
