Book excerpt: As this sequel to the author's SPIDER SONG opens, Joanna Bryce and Dina Miller are struggling to create a harmonious life together. And then the process becomes further complicated by murder-Sweet Birch Lodge seems the perfect place to wait out the Spring Blizzard of 98: old; rustic; creepy creaky; home to a bloody ghost or two, no doubt. Or so the weekend guests at the Ashton Arboretum believe, as they prepare for a night of stormy mayhem. In the morning, when the sleep-deprived visitors assemble in the dining room, it gradually becomes apparent that an unfortunate one of their number is absent. Permanently so. Joanna, naturalist at the arboretum, once again finds herself drawn into the world of murder. Although at first not much involved, additional crimes alter that situation drastically. In the end, she and Dina must combat an unknown killer in a desperate effort to rescue someone they love. Exhausted, with nerves stretched thin and anger at the firing point, they also must rescue their failing relationship. Or let it go. Before the story ends, more than one will have sung the Sad Woman Blues.

Book Sexual Abuse in Youth Sport

Download or read book Sexual Abuse in Youth Sport written by Michael J. Hartill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cases of sport-related child sexual abuse have received increasing news coverage in recent years. This book documents and evaluates this important issue through a critical investigation of the research and theory on sexual violence and child sex offending that has emerged over the past thirty years. Based on life-history interviews with male and female ‘survivors’ of child sexual abuse in sport, this text offers a deeper appreciation for the experiences of those who are sexually victimized within sports and school-sport settings. Drawing on a wide range of sources, it also provides a new theoretical framework through which child sexual abuse in sport may be explored. Offering a critique spanning psychology, sociology and criminology, this book challenges existing theories of sex offending while advocating an alternative epistemology to help better understand and address this social problem. Presenting an original sociological approach to this field of study, Sexual Abuse in Youth Sport is important reading for any researcher, policy-maker or practitioner working in youth sport, physical education, sports coaching, sport policy, child protection or social work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When we were children we made our own fun” is a frequent comment from those who were children in pre-television times. But what games, activities and amusements did children enjoy prior to the mid-1950s? Recollections of older Canadians, selections from writings by Canadian authors and letters written to the children’s pages of agricultural publications indicate that for most children play was then, as now, an essential part of childhood. Through play, youngsters developed the physical, mental and emotional skills that helped them cope with life and taught them to get along with other children. In both rural and urban settings, children were generally free to explore their environment. They were sent outdoors to play by both parents and teachers. Their games were generally self-organized and physically active, with domestic animals acting as important companions and playmates. Children frequently made their own toys and equipment, and, since playing rather than winning was important, most children were included in games. Special days, holidays and organizations for children and youth provided welcome breaks from daily routines. Their lives were busy, but there was always time for play, always time for fun. Norah Lewis has provided an entertaining view of the toys, games and activities in Canada and pre-confederate Newfoundland from approximately 1900 through 1955. Her book will be of interest to historians, educators and sociologists, as well as anyone who lived through, or wants to know more about, those early years in Canada, and the games children used to play.

Book Dinner with DiMaggio

Download or read book Dinner with DiMaggio written by Rock Positano and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of the great Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio from the man who knew him best in the last ten years of his life—“a rare, intimate portrait…that pries open Joltin’ Joe’s perpetually buttoned-up privacy” (The New York Times) with stories about the Yankees, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and other celebrities. In 1990, Dr. Rock Positano, a thirty-two-year-old foot and ankle specialist, met Joe DiMaggio. Despite the forty years between them, an unlikely friendship developed after the doctor successfully treated the baseball champ’s heel spur injury. Joe mentored Rock but came to rely on his young friend to show him a good time in New York, the town that made him a legend. In time, the famously reserved DiMaggio opened up to Dr. Positano and talked about his joys, his disappointments, and his sorrows as he reflected on his extraordinary life. The stories and experiences he shared with Dr. Positano comprise an intimate portrait of one of the great stars of baseball and icon of the twentieth century. “Readers do not have to be baseball fans to be captivated by this memoir, which explores such universal themes as friendship, celebrity, aging, and mortality” (Library Journal, starred review). DiMaggio was a complicated figure—sometimes demanding, sometimes big-hearted, always impeccable, loyal, and a true stand-up guy. This memoir of a decade-long friendship reveals the very private DiMaggio as “a wholly human portrait of an American icon navigating his way through an adoring yet relentlessly demanding public” (Booklist, starred review), while serving up illuminating stories and rare insights about the people in his life, including his teammates, Muhammad Ali, Sandy Koufax, Woody Allen, and many more.
