Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of social influences in the lives of an ethnically diverse sample of fifth through eighth grade students with and without learning disabilities using survey data and academic achievement scores collected in nineteen Chicago Public Schools from 1993--1997. Cross-sectional analyses were employed to investigate the similarities and differences in student perceptions of school, family, and peer group contexts. In addition, longitudinal data were analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling (HIM) in order to identify contextual influences on student academic achievement and mental health outcomes over time, as well as the interactions among these influences. Comparisons of responses from students with and without learning disabilities confirm and extend existing findings in the literature concerning LD student perceptions of their social environments. In addition, the social contexts of students' lives were found to have small, but significant, effects on their growth in academic achievement and mental health after the influences of family background, school placement, and LD status were taken into account. Mile students with and without learning disabilities had somewhat different views of their social contexts, the processes working within these environments appeared to affect them in similar ways. The results suggest that careful attention should be paid to the social contexts of students' lives when planning academic and mental health interventions. The potential for such interventions in students' social environments is discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined student-perceived teacher and classmate support, teacher- and peer-preferred social skills, and educational setting and their relation to student-perceived scholastic competence and social acceptance. Sixty children in fourth and fifth grades who were diagnosed with a learning disability (LD) in reading or written language participated in the study, as well as students' language arts teachers. Four research questions were posed. The first two questions asked whether educational setting was related to students' perceptions of teacher support and classmate support. The third question asked if student-perceived teacher support, teacher-preferred social skills, and educational setting were related to student-perceived scholastic competence. The last question asked whether student-perceived classmate support, peer-preferred social skills, and educational setting were related to student-perceived social acceptance. Two one-way ANOVAs indicated that student perceptions of teacher and classmate support were not related to educational setting. The third and fourth questions were answered using a parallel statistical procedure involving standard multiple regression analyses. Results indicated that social support and social skills were related to aspects of self-concept, and educational setting was related to self-concept. Implications of these findings regarding the role of school psychologists and the development of children with LD were discussed, emphasizing the importance of social processes within the classroom as well as how children with LD formulate their self-perceptions.

Researchers suggest that students with learning disabilities may experience a sense of being different and isolated from their peers because of their learning differences (Alexander-Passe, 2008; Lackaye & Margalit, 2006). This qualitative research describes the perceptions of three young adults (aged 18-21) with learning disabilities (YALD) about their educational experiences in elementary and secondary school. Furthermore, this study identified academic, social, and interconnection of academic and social experiences from the participants' discussions. The lack of understanding about learning disabilities from teachers and peers, especially in elementary school, was a predominant theme in this study. The participants suggested that teachers should get to know the student rather than identifying characteristics of exceptionalities in order to help teachers better understand and work with students with learning disabilities.
