Book Metaphor

Download or read book Metaphor written by and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the present bibliography is to provide the student of metaphor with an up-to-date and comprehensive (albeit not exhaustive) overview of recent publications dealing with various aspects of metaphor in a variety of disciplines. Where the emphasis is primarily on specific works “about” metaphor, mainly in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology, the list has been supplemented with references to studies where metaphor is explicitly recognized as an instrument of research or analysis (e.g., in literature, or in the elaboration of scientific and religious models) or where its use is illustrated.

Book Boccaccio the Philosopher

Download or read book Boccaccio the Philosopher written by Filippo Andrei and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the tangled relationship between literary production and epistemological foundation as exemplified in one of the masterpieces of Italian literature. Filippo Andrei argues that Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron has a significant though concealed engagement with philosophy, and that the philosophical implications of its narratives can be understood through an epistemological approach to the text. He analyzes the influence of Dante, Petrarch, Thomas Aquinas, Aristotle, and other classical and medieval thinkers on Boccaccio's attitudes towards ethics and knowledge-seeking. Beyond providing an epistemological reading of the Decameron, this book also evaluates how a theoretical reflection on the nature of rhetoric and poetic imagination can ultimately elicit a theory of knowledge.

Book Adventures in Speech

Download or read book Adventures in Speech written by Pier Massimo Forni and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book for 1996 The Decameron is a narrative account of a situation in which narration takes place-a collection of one hundred stories set within a larger story. As a group of young men and women fleeing the plague trade stories to pass the time of crisis, storytelling occurs in a social context that allows for comment upon the tales by the tellers themselves, in a setting that elicits one story in return for another. In his close and original analysis, Pier Massimo Forni uses the notion of rhetoric as a guiding principle for a critical assessment of the Decameron. He explores the discursive tools with which the narrators connect the contents of their stories to their audience's environment, and goes on to argue that the book is significantly marked by Boccaccio's habit of exploring the narrative potential of rhetorical forms. By showing how the Decameron marks a new stage in the development of vernacular realism, Forni also charts a new course in Boccaccio criticism. Viewing the cultural and rhetorical context of the medieval masterpiece from a fresh perspective, he offers intriguing insights into the functioning of Boccaccio's narrative. Adventures in Speech maps the cognitive poetic processes that rule the complex authorial network of relationships involving speech, event, received culture, and narrative objects.

Book The Reception of Joseph Conrad in Europe

Download or read book The Reception of Joseph Conrad in Europe written by Robert Hampson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and brought up in Poland bilingually in French and Polish but living for most of his professional life in England and writing in English, Joseph Conrad was, from the start, as much a European writer as he was a British one and his work – from his earliest fictions through Heart of Darkness, Nostromo and The Secret Agent to his later novels– has repeatedly been the focal point of discussions about key issues of the modern age. With chapters written by leading international scholars, this book provides a wide-ranging survey of the reception, translation and publication history of Conrad's works across Europe. Covering reviews and critical discussion, and with some attention to adaptations in other media, these chapters situate Conrad's works in their social and political context. The book also includes bibliographies of key translations in each of the European countries covered and a timeline of Conrad's reception throughout the continent.

Book Petrarch the Poet Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Petrarch the Poet Routledge Revivals written by Peter Hainsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this critical and historical interpretation of Petrarch’s major Italian work, the collection of poems he called the Rerum vulgarium fagmenta, Peter Hainsworth presents Petrarch as a poet of outstanding sophistication and seriousness, occupied with issues which are still central to debates about poetry and language. In the Rerum vulgarium fragmenta Petrarch reformed the received Italian tradition, creating a new kind of lyric poetry. In particular, he found solutions to the intellectual, linguistic and imaginative problems which Dante’s Divine Comedy posed for the succeeding generation of poets. Petrarch the Poet illumines the complexities of Petrarch’s poetic vision, which is simultaneously a form of autobiographical narrative, a poetic encyclopaedia and a meditation on the nature of poetry. The book will appeal to Italian specialists, to those interested in European poetry of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and also to readers interested generally in the nature and function of poetry.

Book Ars memoriae and scriptura interna

Download or read book Ars memoriae and scriptura interna written by Sara Taglialatela and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with Giordano Bruno's ars memoriae and the relation between his works on mnemonics and philosophy in the first phase of his reflection (1582–1585). The hermeneutic hypothesis that will be explored is that it is Giordano Bruno's De umbris idearum that first reveals his new elaboration of the notion of order, which will then be further unfolded in the philosophical works published in London, especially in the notions of nature, language, and praxis developed therein. The research statement is explored into more detail on a methodological level, through a discussion of Hans Blumenberg's interpretation of Giordano Bruno, and on an analytical level, through a metaphorological interpretation of the inward writing and the shadow metaphors in the De umbris idearum.

Book The Economy of Human Relations

Download or read book The Economy of Human Relations written by Joseph D. Falvo and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a modern critical approach to the study of Baldesar Castiglione's Libro del Cortegiano (1528), a monumental work which reflects, par excellence, the culture and ideals of the Italian Renaissance. Generally interpreted in idealistic terms, Il Cortegiano has been placed in the history of Castiglione criticism far from the realism and pragmatism of Machiavelli's Il Principe (1513). Thoroughly based on a close reading of the primary sources (including the often neglected early versions of the treatise), this book challenges the traditional notion of Il Cortegiano as an abstract work of art. Through a careful analysis of the structural changes and thematic developments that occur in the treatise, this book shows that the primary object of Il Cortegiano is to describe the ways in which despotism exerts its power and influence within the court under the veil of figurative language.
