Download or read book Silvicultural Treatments for Black Spruce Establishment in Boreal Ontario written by J. E. Wood and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes four field experiments carried out to assess the performance of black spruce (Picea mariana) outplants in relation to weed control (with or without), stock type (bareroot or paper pot), and planting season (spring versus summer). In one experiment, planting position (centre versus side) within mechanically site-prepared corridors was evaluated. The 1,800 seedlings planted in each of the four experiments were assessed after five and 11 growing seasons in the field (north-eastern Ontario's boreal forest region). Three of the experimental sites are on upland, mixedwood, herb-rich plots; the fourth is on a feathermoss-Sphagnum site type. Performance results are presented in terms of such factors as total height, height increment, basal diameter, mortality, and competition index.

Download or read book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide provides silvicultural and ecological information for the management of black spruce, jack pine, and aspen within the context of sustainable forest management in Ontario. The introduction presents the legislative, philosophical, and ecological context in which the guide was developed. Section II contains an overview of the science, art, and practice of silviculture in Ontario's boreal forest. It also attempts to rationalize and present a standard set of silvicultural terms for use in forest management planning. Section III provides information about the response and adaptation of selected crop trees and competitor species to the physical environment, disturbance, and management intervention. Section IV is a bibliography of decision support tools (including manuals, guides, interpretation keys, reports, and computer programs) available for boreal Ontario. Section V demonstrates how to use the guide to build forest units, silvicultural ground rules, and silvicultural treatment packages. The appendix contains a list of plant species giving common and Latin names.
