Book Silvicultural Alternatives for the Management of Unstable Sites in the Queen Charlotte Islands

Download or read book Silvicultural Alternatives for the Management of Unstable Sites in the Queen Charlotte Islands written by Peter Richard William Sanders and published by BC, Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1986 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest cover plays an important role in modifying the severity and frequency of natural soil mass wasting. Removal of the forest cover through forest harvesting and the associated engineering operations can alter natural processes and aggravate inherent instability. In the Queen Charlotte Islands, steep slopes, finely textured soils, frequent seismic activity, heavy precipitation, shallow rooting tree species, and high winds predispose the area to a high natural level of mass wasting. This preliminary appraisal reviews current silvicultural operations in the Islands and proposes alternatives. Traditional silvicultural systems are described and constraints imposed by the local conditions identified. Naturally occurring forests on the Queen Charlotte Islands are compared to projected managed forests that will replace them, and successional processes and their influence on mass wasting events are discussed. The report concludes by noting several research opportunities in the study of silviculture and mass wasting.

Book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce written by N. Merle Peterson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitka spruce, the largest of the world's spruces, is an important component of British Columbia's coastal forests. Its ecology gives it a special place in the sustainable management of the province's forests. However, in west coast forestry it is poorly known in comparison with its main coniferous companions -- Douglas-fir, western redcedar, and western hemlock. As an important international forestry resource, it is crucial that Sitka spruce -- its ecology and the ecosystems in which it occurs -- be clearly understood by those who are involved with its management.

Book Watershed Rehabilitation Options for Disturbed Slopes on the Queen Charlotte Islands

Download or read book Watershed Rehabilitation Options for Disturbed Slopes on the Queen Charlotte Islands written by William W. Carr and published by Information Services Branch Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface erosion and mass wasting in forested watersheds can increase significantly following road development and logging. This is particularly true on steep forested slopes that receive a great deal of precipitation, such as those on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Through proper planning and the use of high construction standards, many of these problems can be alleviated, but not completely controlled. In addition, unforeseen problems that result in accelerated surface erosion and mass wasting may arise. For these reasons, the forest manager must have a variety of measures to either control erosion or lessen its impacts. This report reviews both prevention and rehabilitation techniques that may be of use in controlling erosion and/or alleviating further erosion damage on the Queen Charlotte Islands. To date, little erosion control or land rehabilitation work has been carried out on forested land on the Charlottes, and it is hoped that this report may provide the basis for future activities in this field.

Book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options

Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options written by James M. Vose and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.
