Book Ted Shawn

Download or read book Ted Shawn written by Paul A. Scolieri and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1969, just months before the Stonewall Riots, Ted Shawn (1891-1972) wanted to tell a story about how his life, writings, and dances contributed to the rapidly evolving gay liberation movement around him. Shawn died before he was able to put forth a candid account about how he, the "Father of American Dance," was homosexual, but he scrupulously archived his correspondence, diaries, photographs, and motion pictures of his dances, anticipating that the full significance of his choreography would reveal itself in time. Ted Shawn: His Life, Writings, and Dances tells that story.

Book Joy Nwosu Lo Bamijoko

Download or read book Joy Nwosu Lo Bamijoko written by Godwin Sadoh and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko is a professionally trained operatic soprano, music educator, music critic, African ethnomusicologist, broadcaster, skits writer, choral conductor, and songwriter. Joy Nwosu was trained in operatic soprano in Italy and received her Ph.D. in music from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; making her the second Nigerian female to earn a doctorate in music. This book addresses thought provoking issues such as feminist gender, it’s a man’s world, and the Nigerian factor. Other pertinent issues narrated in the book include the efficacy of prayer and spectacular triumphs by the power of God. The saga of Joy Nwosu encapsulates the ordeal women are constantly subjected to in a male chauvinistic society. This book is also laced with numerous fascinating photos of Joy Nwosu from 1960 to 2005. Nigerian journalists wrote rave reviews of Joy Nwosu’s stunning performances and crowned her, “first lady of sound,” “diva,” “maestro,” and “high priestess of Nigerian music;” titles that she rightfully earned and deserved for three veritable reasons: (1) Joy Nwosu was the first professionally trained female musician in Nigeria to combine operatic singing with popular dance music; (2) she was the first trained female musician to set up a dance band in Nigeria; and (3) Joy Nwosu was the first trained female musician to release a Long Playing record in Nigeria.

Book Denationalizing Identities

Download or read book Denationalizing Identities written by Wah Guan Lim and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denationalizing Identities explores the relationship between performance and ideology in the global Sinosphere. Wah Guan Lim's study of four important diasporic director-playwrights—Gao Xingjian, Stan Lai Sheng-chuan, Danny Yung Ning Tsun, and Kuo Pao Kun—shows the impact of theater on ideas of "Chineseness" across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. At the height of the Cold War, the "Bamboo Curtain" divided the "two Chinas" across the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, Hong Kong prepared for its handover to the People's Republic of China and Singapore rethought Chinese education. As geopolitical tensions imposed ethno-nationalist identities across the region, these four dramatists wove together local, foreign, and Chinese elements in their art, challenging mainland China's narrative of an inevitable communist outcome. By performing cultural identities alternative to the ones sanctioned by their own states, they debunked notions of a unified Chineseness. Denationalizing Identities highlights the key role theater and performance played in circulating people and ideas across the Chinese-speaking world, well before cross-strait relations began to thaw.
