Book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization

Download or read book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization written by Lam Wai-man and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the widely held belief that Hong Kong's political culture is one of indifference. The term "political indifference" is used to suggest the apathy, naivete, passivity, and utilitarianism of Hong Kong's people toward political life. Taking a broad historical look at political participation in the former colony, Wai-man Lam argues that this is not a valid view and demonstrates Hong Kong's significant political activism in thirteen selected case studies covering 1949 through the present. Through in-depth analysis of these cases she provides a new understanding of the nature of Hong Kong politics, which can be described as a combination of political activism and a culture of depoliticization.

  • Author : M. Jones
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-07

Download or read book The Grass Crop written by M. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grass is a very important world crop. In some countries, for example the UK, Australia and New Zealand, animal products from grassland make a greater contribution to the value of agricultural production than does any other crop. Yet research being undertaken to further· our understanding of the factors affecting the growth and productivity of grasslands has trailed in the shadow of the determined efforts made to improve our knowledge of cereals and, to a somewhat lesser extent, legumes. However, in spite of its low profile, grassland research has resulted in considerable advances in our knowledge in the last 20 years, and we feel that this book provides a timely opportunity to bring together some of this work in a review of what is primarily the ecophysiology of the temperate grass crop. Unlike other crops grown for their grain or vegatative parts, grass and grassland products are used almost entirely for the feeding of ruminant animals; the interaction of the sward and the animal thus adds an extra dimension to investigations of the productivity of grassland. No one author could adequately encompass the breadth of work covered in the book. Acknowledged experts have therefore been selected as contributors to provide an up-to-date review of their own specialized areas. Whilst multi author texts can cause problems of lack of uniformity of approach, each contributor has been made aware of the contents of the other chapters in an attempt both to provide continuity and to prevent glaring overlaps.

Book All Was Not Lost

Download or read book All Was Not Lost written by Anatoly Bezkorovainy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a Russian immigrant's life story, written for himself, though with the hope that others may also find it interesting (after Dr. N. I. Pirogov). Chapter 1 begins with the family's chronicle in the Russian Empire, and how the author's parents ended up in Latvia following the Bolshevik revolution. It continues through the World War II years in Latvia, Germany and its post-war D. P. camps. In Chapter 2, the author recollects his educational experiences in America, the usual struggles of his immigrant parents to make a new life in their adopted country, and their passage into the next world in 1975 and 1988. The next two chapters are concerned with the author's work history as a scientist and professor of biochemistry at Rush Medical College in Chicago and elsewhere. Chapters 5 and 6 are concerned with the spiritual persona of the author: his Russian ethnicity and his Orthodox faith, including history of Russian immigration and the Orthodox Church in the U. S. The author's interactions with these communities are reviewed, as are his attempts to defend Orthodoxy and Russia's historical past in America's news media via letters to the editor and publication of the Chicago Russian-American. Chapter 7 is devoted to the author's family, i.e., life with his wife Marilyn and his sons Gregory and Alexander, plus his commentary on contemporary American society. His conservative world view, generated by his spiritual persona and behaviors of the "progressive" Soviet Union and its American followers, are illustrated by his letters to the news media during the 1950-2000 decades. The book carries a foreword by Dr. Gerasim Tikoff, a friend and retired cardiologist, and is illustrated by photographs from 19th century Russia and the author's life in Latvia, Germany and the U. S.

Book Hong Kong from Britain to China

Download or read book Hong Kong from Britain to China written by Li Pang-Kwong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The Sino-British joint declaration in 1985 had called to the end of British rule in Hong Kong, but the impacts of the agreed introduction of popular election during the transitional period have still not fully emerged. Being granted Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong by China after 1997, Hong Kong people are suddenly exposed to the kind of politics that they were not engaged in before. The transitional politics is further complicated by the fact that the majority of Hong Kong voters supported the democrats, whose political value and orientation differed from that of the Beijing government. In order to comprehend the collective behaviour of the Hong Kong voters, the author first traces the development of the Hong Kong state and put his readers into context of Hong Kong electoral politics. By adopting the cleavage approach in explaining the voters’ choice and the election results since the 1990, the author examines whether the existing institutional arrangements as established by the Basic law is capable of solving the political and electoral conflicts of the days.

Book Contradictions and Conflict

Download or read book Contradictions and Conflict written by Donald V. Kurtz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-08 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyzes the history of conflict in one Indian university. Scholars representing Maharashtrian Brahman and non-Brahman castes embedded in the university's postgraduate campus and urban and rural colleges have fought for over forty years to control university government. The structure of these castes, institutional and regional contradictions, suggests that conflict will persist. The book explores the history of conflict from 1924 to 1989 and proposes a dialectical methodology to analyze the conflict. It examines the agents and dramatic conflicts that engaged them. Finally, it suggests a dialectical political anthropology for understanding politics anthropologically. The work suggests that a dialectical methodology focused on internal social contradictions provides a superior analysis of conflicts that impel historical agency, and that universities, largely ignored by anthropologists, are exciting reservoirs for ethnographic research.

Yunmen Wenyan (c. 864–949) was a master of the Chinese Zen (Chan) tradition and one of the most influential teachers in its history, showing up in many famous koans—in one of which he’s credited with the famous line, “Every day is a good day.” His teachings are said to permeate heaven and earth, to address immediately and totally the state and conditions of his audience, and to cut off even the slightest trace of duality. In this classic study of Master Yunmen, historian and Buddhist scholar Urs App clearly elucidates the encompassing and penetrating nature of Yunmen’s teachings, provides pioneering translations of his numerous talks and dialogues, and includes a brief history of Chinese Zen, a biography of the master, and a wealth of resource materials.

Book Mike Starr of Oshawa

Download or read book Mike Starr of Oshawa written by Myron Momryk and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Starr had a remarkable career in Canadian politics. In June 1957, he was appointed Minister of Labour in John Diefenbaker’s cabinet and created a sensation, especially among Canadian ethnocultural groups. He made political history as the first Ukrainian Canadian appointed to federal cabinet. As Minister of Labour, Starr was faced with numerous national problems, including seasonal unemployment, regional disparities, union negotiations and emerging militant nationalism in Quebec. When the Diefenbaker government was defeated in the 1963 federal election, Starr returned to his earlier role as Member of Parliament. With the changing Canadian political environment, he was defeated by a tiny margin in the 1968 federal election. Starr continued his distinguished career of public service from 1968 to 1980. He promoted the increasing involvement of ethnocultural groups in Canada political life. In recent decades, it has become a political norm to have members of various ethnocultural and visible minority groups elected to the House of Commons, and appointed to Cabinet and other senior government positions. For breaking this barrier, Mike Starr was indeed a pioneer in Canadian politics. This book is published in English.
