Book excerpt: Jean came into the world during the Roaring Twenties in an era of flappers, illegal booze, parties and good times, until the prosperity ended suddenly with the Crash on October 29, 1929, and not just the US, but the whole globe entered the Great Depression. Growing up dirt poor, the youngest in a family of ten children, he managed to have a happy childhood. Entering World War II in 1943, just after high school, Jean eventually came to realize in the 50’s, as a single father of three girls, that life might hold worse things in store for him than almost dying in the war. Fighting life’s battles with the backdrop of his war experiences behind him, Jean learns that forgiveness and doing the right thing bring redemption and peace.

Book excerpt: An intriguing new series following the trails of the Wild West It all starts with a coin, but not just any coin.... In 1835 a dollar can mean life, or the slow death by starvation for a young New Orleans street urchin. When the lad spots the silver dollar in the debris littering his path, he feels it's the luckiest day of his young life. But this coin has a history, and a future that doesn't include the boy. For a while the urchin and the coin's paths will intersect, and the union will spark an adventure the size and scope of which the young man could never have dreamed. But a coin is not meant for keeping. As the silver dollar leaves one set of hands for another owner, the journey continues. From far-flung western frontiers, to the Great Plains, this one coin will touch many lives, a mountain man, a soiled dove, and it will witness unspeakable violence, and events of touching humanity. For many the coin will become their savor, a single silver drop in their empty well of hope. For others the coin is their last earthy possession, a token of good luck passed on to others for new guardianship. Yet, at each new pocket or purse, the scope and breath of the coin's path will astound you. The Silver Dollar is an epic new western action tale like nothing you've ever read before, unique, heartbreaking and packed with the historical details you have come to expect from best selling author, WR Benton.

For those struggling in the harsh frontier landscape a silver dollar can mean the difference between life, and death. The Coin series follows the epic journey of a single dollar as it passes from hand to hand changing lives. Some the coin will break, others it will enrich, at least for a time, but in every case the coin always moves on, because the coin was never meant for keeping. In Book Two we pick up the coin in the dusty streets of Omaha where it’s been keeping company with a lady of evening. Later the coin will travel west in the pocket of a cowhand, and onward to the village of a plains tribe, and finding its way into the hands of a Sioux warrior. Who the coin encounters and how they inevitably pass the coin along is all part of this unique tale. Fortunes will be won, lost and plundered, as the coin continues on its seemingly random path. The Silver Dollar, Book 2 is an exciting new episode in the tale of a coin and its owners throughout the wild west of the 1800's. It is unique, heartbreaking and packed with the historical details you have come to expect from best selling author, WR Benton.

Book excerpt: The Silver Dollar Eyes is an action-adventure story in the old tradition: hidden treasure, rival claimants, hand-to-hand combat, oriental intrigue, conniving schemers and native head hunters, all involved in a perilous journey through the most primitive islands in the world. Several years after the end of World War II in the pacific, a San Francisco travel writer is assigned to a bizarre search in Dutch New Guinea: find a remote native temple said to have scores of human skulls with silver dollars embedded in the eye sockets. An ex-GI who stole into the temple in 1945 swears that some of the dollars were dated 1804, the most valuable rare coin date in the world! As news of his mission leaks out, the writer is mugged, slugged, drugged, and duped as other adventurers join in the race to reach the Temple of Skulls before it is engulfed in a cataclysmic volcanic eruption. Albin Roman is retired from the Army as a civilian Public Affairs Officer. As a member of an Amphibian Engineer unit, he visited many remote villages along New Guinea's 1600-mile coast.

Book So Called Dollars

Download or read book So Called Dollars written by Harold E. Hibler and published by Coin & Currency Institute. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When So-Called Dollars was published it was the first, and it is still the only book to deal comprehensively with its subject matter. The book begins with the legendary Erie Canal Completion issues of 1826 and proceeds to catalog 135 years of the Golden Age of American history, all the way up to 1961. Although there have been many propositions for reviving the book over the years, none were more than theoretical musings until two collectors, Tom Hoffman of Crystal Lake, IL and Jonathan Brecher of Cambridge, MA set the process in motion. They have been joined by two others, Dave Hayes and John Dean, to produce a remarkable new edition, of the sort that can only be the product of dedicated hobbyists who love their subject and see it as their obligation to share with others the knowledge gained from years of collecting. While the second edition holds true to the original in basic style and in substance, prices have skyrocketed and it offers much that is new. There are many more illustrations than in the first edition. In fact, virtually every type is now represented by a photograph. More historical information for the issues is presented in the text, which has been further expanded with additional listings of both previously unknown metal varieties and totally new items. The size of each item is now given in mm rather than in 16ths of an inch as in the 1963 edition. Each issue has been assigned a rarity rating of from R-1, indicating more than 5,000 known, to R-10, meaning unique. In addition, a loose-leaf price guide included in each book at no additional charge. The index has been expanded to include references to more subjects and places. Finally, there is a section of color plates. The Hibler & Kappen book remains the standard reference work on the subject with its HK numbers an instantly recognizable means of cataloging and identification.

Book Where Men Win Glory

Download or read book Where Men Win Glory written by Jon Krakauer and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A "gripping book about this extraordinary man who lived passionately and died unnecessarily" (USA Today) in post-9/11 Afghanistan, from the bestselling author of Into the Wild and Into Thin Air. In 2002, Pat Tillman walked away from a multimillion-dollar NFL contract to join the Army and became an icon of American patriotism. When he was killed in Afghanistan two years later, a legend was born. But the real Pat Tillman was much more remarkable, and considerably more complicated than the public knew. Sent first to Iraq—a war he would openly declare was “illegal as hell” —and eventually to Afghanistan, Tillman was driven by emotionally charged, sometimes contradictory notions of duty, honor, justice, and masculine pride, and he was determined to serve his entire three-year commitment. But on April 22, 2004, his life would end in a barrage of bullets fired by his fellow soldiers. Though obvious to most of the two dozen soldiers on the scene that a ranger in Tillman’s own platoon had fired the fatal shots, the Army aggressively maneuvered to keep this information from Tillman’s family and the American public for five weeks following his death. During this time, President Bush used Tillman’s name to promote his administration’ s foreign policy. Long after Tillman’s nationally televised memorial service, the Army grudgingly notified his closest relatives that he had “probably” been killed by friendly fire while it continued to dissemble about the details of his death and who was responsible. Drawing on Tillman’s journals and letters and countless interviews with those who knew him and extensive research in Afghanistan, Jon Krakauer chronicles Tillman’s riveting, tragic odyssey in engrossing detail highlighting his remarkable character and personality while closely examining the murky, heartbreaking circumstances of his death. Infused with the power and authenticity readers have come to expect from Krakauer’s storytelling, Where Men Win Glory exposes shattering truths about men and war. This edition has been updated to reflect new developments and includes new material obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.
