Download or read book Skiing Sun Valley A History from Union Pacific to the Holdings written by John W. Lundin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Union Pacific Railroad's Averell Harriman had a bold vision to restore rail passenger traffic decimated by the Great Depression: create ski tourism in Idaho's remote Wood River Valley. A $1.5 million investment opened Sun Valley in December 1936 with a lavish lodge, luxury shopping, Austrian ski instructors and extensive backcountry skiing. Prestigious tournaments featured the world's best skiers. Chairlifts invented by Union Pacific engineers serviced skiers quickly and comfortably. Ski instructor and filmmaker Otto Lang recalled that seemingly overnight, it became "a magnet for the 'beautiful people,' a meeting place for movie stars and moguls, chairmen and captains of industry, Greek shipping tycoons, and peripatetic playboys--and playgirls--of the international social set." After World War II and Harriman's departure, Union Pacific's willingness to pay the $500,000 yearly subsidy waned. Bill Janss purchased it in 1964 and reimagined it as a year-round resort but lacked the capital for growth. Sinclair Oil owners Earl and Carol Holding acquired it in 1977, revitalizing it into a premier resort with international status. Award-winning ski historian John W. Lundin celebrates America's first destination ski resort using unpublished Union Pacific documents, oral histories, contemporaneous accounts and more than 150 historic images.

Book excerpt: Melinda Brandt is fiercely protective of her brothers, and has been since her mother's death at an early age. In fact, she has built her life and her career as Sheriff on her ability to always maintain control. Now, it feels as if even that is slipping away from her. A madman (Charles Sanders) has entered her family's lives, causing her brothers to flee and leaving her all alone. Now an outside agency is moving in to take the case away from her, and she cannot bear to let it go. In a desperate attempt to regain control, Melinda goes outside of the law and leaves town with Charles's step-brother (Cale Winters) to track him down and bring him to her own brand justice. On the road, she finds her primal self responding to Cale's presence, but how can she dare to let her guard down with so much on the line? When Cale first met Stanhope's Sheriff, Melinda Brandt, it had not been under the best of circumstances but he had felt an immediate attraction to this brunette haired tour de force. He had been forced to table his attraction, however as he had only come to the small Oklahoma town because his step-brother Charles had been arrested and he had promised his mom that he would act as his attorney. Cale has always felt responsible for Charles, but when he escapes and goes on the run after attacking members of Melinda's family, Cale knows he can no longer sit idly by. Pairing up with Melinda, the two strike out on the road to hunt down his brother. The longer they spend together, the more Cale begins to see through her tough exterior, but the closer he gets, the more she shuts him out. Will he be able to withstand the fire long enough to remain unbranded by her intensity or will her wild spirit remain untamed? When lives are on the line, can he choose this woman over the man that was raised as his brother?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmett Benson makes no apologies for his bachelor status. He revels in a woman’s surrender but does not want the responsibility of claiming a submissive for his own, because no one is worth the price of his freedom. He appreciates his friends, loves his horse, and fancies wrangling cattle every day over interacting with people. When it comes to his life, he figures he has it made, and that there is no reason to alter things—now, or in the future. But all it takes is one lousy spill off a new, temperamental thoroughbred to cause a load of trouble. One look at the prim and proper new town doctor, and Emmett wants nothing more than to ruffle her cool demeanor. The woman is likely too tightly wound to even consider submission. He cannot desire her. It is out of the question. He must be delirious from the pain of his injuries to even be contemplating the possibility of claiming her, even though she makes him want to mark his territory and challenge any man who comes near her. But then the doctor makes an unexpected house call and, with her sweet, feminine scent clouding his senses, Emmett makes her a bargain. He will behave like the perfect patient, for the cost of a single kiss, freely given. He never expected her to accept his offer. He thought he was in trouble before, but after just one kiss, every dominant part of Emmett’s being thunders: MINE.
