Book Silver in Healthcare

Download or read book Silver in Healthcare written by Alan B. G. Lansdown and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver in healthcare has many different facets and since the early concepts of microbiology of the 1880's, has been developed from usage in surgical clips, staples, foil wound dressings and surgical implants, to the widespread and clinically effective antiseptic wound dressings, sutures, catheters, bone and dental implants, and cardiovascular devices of today. From the dawn of human civilisation, silver has had a role of water purification and even now has a role in hospital water systems for control of MRSA and legionnaires disease. Biotechnological advances in recent years have extended the antimicrobial properties of silver into production of hygiene textiles and use in domestic products. Important advances have been made in understanding mechanisms of antimicrobial action of silver, the central importance of ionisation patterns in the presence of body fluids and secretion, and the genetical and molecular profiles of silver resistance. This publication is a comprehensive account of the history of silver in medicine, its clinical benefits and wide advantages as a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. It is clear from the extensive array of publications in recognised and unofficial press, that many misconceptions and misleading conceptions have been perpetuated, leading to errors in evaluation of the safety of the metal in occupational, domestic and therapeutic situations. The book is unique in that it is the only comprehensive presentation of the toxicology of silver and it identifies the major misconceptions in the safety of silver and interpretation of argyria and argyrosis as central features of silver toxicity. In this book, Dr Lansdown reviews the literature from a clinical and experimental viewpoint, with the benefit of his many years research on silver and experience gained in working with clinicians, healthcare product manufacturers and microbiologists. There is also discussion in the book on the relevance of antimicrobial resistance to silver and deficiencies in present day clinical practice in not evaluating incidences of resistance on a routine basis. The subject matter is presented in a readable fashion and includes reference to use of the metal in such practices as acupuncture and treatment of tropical diseases as practised in some parts of the world, each of which is accompanied by special clinical risk. It is also a collation of current views on the use and efficacy of silver as a broad spectrum antibiotic. The chapters which deal specifically with toxicological aspects of silver in clinical, occupational and environmental issues are central to the book's value. The book is aimed at clinicians, research scientists and product manufacturers and will provide ideas for new research and academic endeavour. It is also essential reading for research students with an interest in metal toxicity and its management in mammalian tissues.

Book Atmospheric Corrosion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christofer Leygraf
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2016-06-07

  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Atmospheric Corrosion written by Christofer Leygraf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATMOSPHERIC CORROSION Presents a comprehensive look at atmospheric corrosion, combining expertise in corrosion science and atmospheric chemistry Atmospheric corrosion has been a subject of engineering study, largely empirical, for nearly a century. Scientists came to the field rather later on and had considerable difficulty bringing their arsenal of tools to bear on the problem. Atmospheric corrosion was traditionally studied by specialists in corrosion having little knowledge of atmospheric chemistry, history, or prospects. Atmospheric Corrosion provides a combined approach bringing together experimental corrosion and atmospheric chemistry. The second edition expands on this approach by including environmental aspects of corrosion, atmospheric corrosion modeling, and international corrosion exposure programs. The combination of specialties provides a more comprehensive coverage of the topic. These scientific insights into the corrosion process and its amelioration are the focus of this book. Key topics include the following: Basic principles of atmospheric corrosion chemistry Corrosion mechanisms in controlled and uncontrolled environments Degradation of materials in architectural, transport, and structural applications; electronic devices; and cultural artifacts Protection of existing materials and choosing new ones that resist corrosion Prediction of how and where atmospheric corrosion may evolve in the future Complete with appendices discussing experimental techniques, computer models, and the degradation of specific metals, Atmospheric Corrosion, Second Edition continues to be an invaluable resource for corrosion scientists, corrosion engineers, conservators, environmental scientists, and anyone interested in the theory and application of this evolving field. The book concerns primarily the atmospheric corrosion of metals and is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in any of the physical or engineering sciences.

Book Silver Recovery From Assorted Spent Sources Toxicology Of Silver Ions

Download or read book Silver Recovery From Assorted Spent Sources Toxicology Of Silver Ions written by Syed Sabir and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver holds three world records; it has the lowest contact resistance, highest electrical conductivity and the best thermal conductivity of all metals. The element's physical strength, brilliance and malleability leads to its many uses from electronics to optical applications.A new 'silver rush' has occurred following the recent discovery that silver, when divided to form particles at the nano scale, can take on new properties. Meanwhile, there has been an increase in regulations against environmental pollution of silver ions toxicity, which have caused numerous diseases and disorders in the marine, microbial, invertebrate and vertebrate community (including humans). Both of which have led to a great interest in silver recovery for both environmental toxicity and an economic point of view.Comprised of ten chapters, this book draws attention to the most advance technologies in silver recovery and recycling from various spent sources, which will appeal to research scientists and metallurgists. The state of the art in recovery of silver from different sources by hydrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processing and varieties of leaching, cementing, reducing agents, adsorbents, and bio-sorbents are highlighted in this book.

Book The Chemistry of Organic Derivatives of Gold and Silver

Download or read book The Chemistry of Organic Derivatives of Gold and Silver written by Saul Patai and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999-10-18 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 100th volume in this highly successful and renowned Patai andRappoport series 'The Chemistry of Functional Groups' is fittinglydevoted to the precious metals, gold and silver. Gold is a soft metal occurring naturally as particles in quartz oras nuggets. Gold was initially used extensively in coinage andjewellery and has recently found applications in biochemistry, medicine and material science. Gold readily forms organometalliccompounds (R-Au-L with L = sulphide, phosphine and isocyanide),oxides and halides. Silver is a ductile metal which was used incoinage and for mirrors. It is now used for jewellery, electricalconductors, dental and surgical components. Silver forms stablesilver halides for use in Photography and i.r. spectroscopy as asupport material. Other silver compounds are also used incatalysis. This volume contains 16 chapters dealing with calculations onorganogold compounds, physical and spectroscopic properties (NMR,ESR, PES, Mossbauer spectra), thermochemical and analyticalproperties, the synthesis and uses of the title compounds and theirreactions such as rearrangements, pyrolysis and photochemicalreactions. The medicinal use of organogold compounds and theincreased use of gold-thiol monolayers are also summarized. Each of the chapters has been prepared by leading scientists inthis field making this volume invaluable for researchers inacademia and industry working with gold and silver, inbiochemistry, pharmaceutical and materials chemistry. Organic compunds containg Nitrogen are of outstanding importnce inbiochemistry and in environmental systems. This volume gives asound introduction into physical chemistry of amino, nitriso, nitroand related functional groups. This volume is now available in electronic format from BooksOnline.
