Book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition

Download or read book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Book Comparative Physiology and Evolution of Vision in Invertebrates

Download or read book Comparative Physiology and Evolution of Vision in Invertebrates written by M.F. Land and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphology and physiology are two fields which cannot be separated. This statement needs to be amplified: purely factual results of a morphological or physiological nature only have real value when they are gained in the context of certain guiding, embracing questions. By themselves they are mostly of little value, because only a guiding hypothesis or theory is of any importance. Equally, a physiological question will always raise questions as to the morphological substrate, and vice versa. Thus, Wiedemann's discovery, for instance, that the visual cells in each ommatidium of the dipterans have differing fields of vision has revived the question as to what the optical properties of individual visual cells, and the complete ommatidium, might be and how neighboring ommatidia interact. These questions in turn led to that of the morphological, neuronal wiring diagram of the visual cells in the optical ganglia. Within the realm of invertebrates, the morphological and physiological problems of visual perception have been resolved in very different ways on various levels, from the photo receptor to higher centers; despite many investigations, however, there remain unsolved problems. The first chapter of Vol. VII/6B deals with the neuroarchitecture in the visual system of two groups: crustaceans and insects. These systems are best known through recent investigations. The second chapter is devoted to the neural principles in the visual system of insects. It could not have been written without parallel research into morphology.

Book Clays in the Critical Zone

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul A. Schroeder
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2018-08-09
  • ISBN : 110861776X
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Clays in the Critical Zone written by Paul A. Schroeder and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clays and clay minerals are the most abundant natural reactive solids on the Earth's surface. This comprehensive review considers clay science in the context of the Critical Zone - the Earth's permeable near-surface layer. Providing information on clays and clay minerals related to geological, biological and material sciences in the Critical Zone, it's well suited for graduate students and researchers interested in clay science, and environmental and soil mineralogy. The book starts with an introduction to clays and clay minerals, their historic background, and a review of how clay science impacts the Critical Zone. Examples and applications demonstrate how clays regulate habitats and determine the availability of other resources. These examples are supported by quantitative field data, including numerical and graphical depictions of clay and clay mineral occurrences. The book concludes by covering Critical Zone clay geochemistry and clay sequences, including the industrial, synthetic medical and extra-terrestrial world of clay science.

Book A Revised Correlation of Carboniferous Rocks in the British Isles

Download or read book A Revised Correlation of Carboniferous Rocks in the British Isles written by C. N. Waters and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report revises and expands upon the 1976 and 1978 publications for the Dinantian and Silesian, respectively, combining them into a single account of British and Irish Carboniferous stratigraphy. The need to update the two Special Reports reflects the considerable advances in Carboniferous geology over the last 30 years. The report covers developments in international chronostratigraphy and incorporates wholesale reassessments of British lithostratigraphy. A huge volume of biostratigraphical information has been published over recent decades and the report summarizes the key information. Carboniferous rocks have long been of economic importance, but it is the search for hydrocarbons, in its infancy at the time of the previous reports, which has greatly increased our understanding of Carboniferous successions offshore and at depth, particularly in southern and eastern England. This Special Report will be a valuable reference for research and applied geoscientists working on rocks of Carboniferous age in the UK, Ireland and offshore areas.
