  • Publisher : Vintage

  • ISBN : 0679776222
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Very Bad Poetry written by Kathryn Petras and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1997-03-25 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing very bad poetry requires talent. It helps to have a wooden ear for words, a penchant for sinking into a mire of sentimentality, and an enviable confidence that allows one to write despite absolutely appalling incompetence. The 131 poems collected in this first-of-its-kind anthology are so glaringly awful that they embody a kind of genius. From Fred Emerson Brooks' "The Stuttering Lover" to Matthew Green's "The Spleen" to Georgia Bailey Parrington's misguided "An Elegy to a Dissected Puppy", they mangle meter, run rampant over rhyme, and bludgeon us into insensibility with their grandiosity, anticlimax, and malapropism. Guaranteed to move even the most stoic reader to tears (of laughter), Very Bad Poetry is sure to become a favorite of the poetically inclined (and disinclined).

Book Mother Goose for Grownups

Download or read book Mother Goose for Grownups written by Guy Wetmore Carryl and published by . This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Wetmore Carryl (1873-1904) was an American humorist and poet. When he was only 20 years old he had his first article published in The New York Times. During his college years he had written plays for amateur performances. After graduation, in 1896 he became a staff writer for Munseyas Magazine under Frank Munsey and he was later promoted to managing editor of the magazine. Later he went to work for Harperas Magazine and was sent to Paris. While in Paris he wrote for Life, Outing, Munseyas, and Collieras, as well as his own independent writings. Some of Carrylas more well-known works were his humorous poems that were parodies of Aesopas Fables, such as The Sycophantic Fox and the Gullible Raven and of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, such as The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet, poems which are still popular today. He also wrote a number of humorous parodies of Grimmas Fairy Tales, such as How Little Red Riding Hood Came To Be Eaten and How Fair Cinderella Disposed of Her Shoe. His humorous poems usually ended with a pun on the words used in the moral of the story.
