Book Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina Classic Reprint written by Lewis J. Hash and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina This report describes the principal Sillimanite deposits in North Carolina. In the first comprehensive report on a new mineral it is desirable to give a complete description of the geology of the mineral, but time allotted to the study did not permit detailed geological studies; therefore, this phase of the report has been kept to a minimum. An attempt has been made to assemble the data in such form that they would be of use to those who are interested in prospecting, mining, and using Sillimanite. The reconnaissance field work has shown that Sillimanite occurs in most all counties west of the cen tral Piedmont area of the State. The major Sillimanite deposits and those offering the best, production possibilities occur in two belts, one located in the upper Piedmont, designated the Cliffside - Elkin belt, and the other located west of the Blue Ridge designated the warne-sylva belt. The authors are aware of Sillimanite occurrences outside of these two principal belts, but most of these other known occurrences are small and appear to be of little economic importance. The two principal belts are SO extensive that it was not feasible to obtain all the desired data. Since the deposits are spread over large areas, one of the problems confronting those interested in the Sillimanite has been that of determining which deposits are best suited for mining and concentration. It is hoped that the data presented in this report will serve to delimit the deposits so that the more promising -ones can be more readily selected. Download or read book The Kaolins of North Carolina Classic Reprint written by W. S. Bayley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kaolins of North Carolina The finest clay particles may be carried out to sea where they may be deposited in quiet water. If the sources of such clays furnish kaolinite unmixed with dark fibrous or flaky materials the resulting clay beds will consist of white clay of uniform character and often of great purity. Pure, white sedimentary clays are not known to occur in commercial quantities in North Carolina, though they are abundant in South Carolina. Sedimentary clays are not related to the rocks on which they lie either in composition, or in the shapes of their deposits. Since the sedimentary clays are not discussed in this report their further characterization is not necessary.
