So, with a small band of companions, she takes to the road--the Silk Road--that storied collection of routes that link the silks of Cathay, the spices of the Indies and the jewels of the Indus to the markets of the west. Book excerpt: The Silk and the Song by Charles Louis Fontenay Besides, Snuk was an uncompromising master with more than a touch of cruelty in his make-up. He would whip Alan savagely for minor inattention, for failure to respond promptly to the reins, for speaking at all in his presence. Alan's back was soon covered with spur scars, and one eye often was half closed from a whip lash across the face We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Download or read book By the Shores of the Middle Sea written by Dana Stabenow and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Shores of the Middle Sea is the second novel in Dana Stabenow's Silk and Song Trilogy. In Everything Under the Heavens, 16-year old Johanna fled Cambaluc-and her murderous stepmother-joining her uncle's westbound caravan on the Silk Road. With her foster brother Jaufre and a few faithful companions, they made it to the rooftop of the world-Terak Pass-separating Mongol China from the scattered sheikdoms of the Persian empire. Then, disaster struck. In a climactic skirmish, Johanna and her stallion, North Wind, were abducted and Jaufre left for dead. Now, in By the Shores of the Middle Sea, Johanna is a prisoner in the harem at Talikan, with Baron Ogodei's army pillaging the countryside and preparing to sack the tiny Persian enclave. Hundreds of leagues to the south, in Kabul, Jaufre lies recovering from his near-fatal wound. Their journey has taken them halfway across a continent, yet an equal distance still lies between them and Gaza, where Johanna and Jaufre once meant to take ship for Venice and the sanctuary of Johanna's grandfather's family. Gaza and Venice: two cities on opposite shores of the Middle Sea that together open a door to the West. For Johanna and Jaufre, it's a passage that will shape their destiny, if only they can reach it.

Book The Collected Short Stories and Essays

Download or read book The Collected Short Stories and Essays written by Dana Stabenow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Award-winning author Dana Stabenow is best known for her Kate Shugak series of crime novels, but the unifying protagonist of almost all her writing, be it crime, fantasy, horror, or science fiction, is Alaska. This genre-spanning collection of sixteen short stories features familiar characters like Kate and Jim, Liam and Wy, and Bill and Moses, but also ranges farther afield than many readers will expect, leaping from modern-day Anchorage to twenty-second-century Mars to the fantasy kingdom of Mnemosynea. Remarkably disparate, but indisputably Stabenow, a writer whose fertile imagination is anything but predictable. Titles in this collection are 'Nooses Give', 'Conspiracy', 'Under the Influence', 'Wreck Rights', 'Cherchez la Femme', 'Siren Song', 'The Eyak Interpreter', 'Any Taint of Vice', 'On the Evidence', 'Missing, Presumed...', 'The Perfect Gift', 'Gold Fever', 'Cheechako', 'No Place Like Home', 'Justice is a Two-Edged Sword', and 'A Woman's Work'. Newly added in this edition, find 'Collected Essays' and 'Dana on Writing' as well.

Book Middle Imperial China 900 1350

Download or read book Middle Imperial China 900 1350 written by Linda Walton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly readable and engaging work, Linda Walton presents a dynamic survey of China's history from the tenth through the mid-fourteenth centuries from the founding of the Song dynasty through the Mongol conquest when Song China became part of the Mongol Empire and Marco Polo made his famous journey to the court of the Great Khan. Adopting a thematic approach, she highlights the political, social, economic, intellectual, and cultural changes and continuities of the period often conceptualized as 'Middle Imperial China'. Particular emphasis is given to themes that inform scholarship on world history: religion, the state, the dynamics of empire, the transmission of knowledge, the formation of political elites, gender, and the family. Consistent coverage of peoples beyond the borders – Khitan, Tangut, Jurchen, and Mongol, among others – provides a broader East Asian context and introduces a more nuanced, integrated representation of China's past.

Book Sacred Economies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael John Walsh
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0231148321
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Sacred Economies written by Michael John Walsh and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist monasteries in medieval China employed a variety of practices to ensure their ascendancy and survival. Most successful was the exchange of material goods for salvation, as in the donation of land, which allowed monks to spread their teachings throughout China. By investigating a variety of socioeconomic spaces produced and perpetuated by Chinese monasteries, Michael J. Walsh reveals the "sacred economies" that shaped early Buddhism and its relationship with consumption and salvation. Centering his study on Tiantong, a Buddhist monastery that has thrived for close to seventeen centuries in southeast China, Walsh follows three main topics: the spaces monks produced, within and around which a community could pursue a meaningful existence; the social and economic avenues through which monasteries provided diverse sacred resources and secured the primacy of Buddhist teachings within an agrarian culture; and the nature of "transactive" participation within monastic spaces, which later became a fundamental component of a broader Chinese religiosity. Unpacking these sacred economies and repositioning them within the history of religion in China, Walsh encourages a different approach to the study of Chinese religion, emphasizing the critical link between religious exchange and the production of material culture.
