Book SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SILICON CARBIDE WHISKERS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN SILICON NITRIDE MATRIX COMPOSITES SILICON CARBIDE SILICON NITRIDE

Download or read book SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SILICON CARBIDE WHISKERS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN SILICON NITRIDE MATRIX COMPOSITES SILICON CARBIDE SILICON NITRIDE written by Liya Wang and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Type C SiC whiskers showed a more obvious toughening effect for Si$\sb3$N$\sb4$ ceramics than the commercial Tokamax SiC whiskers. This might be due to the effect of interfacial bonding and/or the effect of the morphology and size of the whiskers.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, silicon carbide fibres and whiskers, and carbon nanotubes, including single-walled and multiwalled types. None of these agents had been assessed previously by the IARC Monographs Working Group. The Working Group relied mainly on epidemiological studies to evaluate the carcinogenic hazard to humans exposed to fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, an environmental contaminant that was reported to cause mesothelioma in the regional population of Biancavilla, Sicily, Italy. Silicon carbide fibres are by-products of the manufacture of silicon carbide particles by the Acheson process; silicon carbide whiskers are produced by other processes. The evaluations of the fibres and of the occupational exposures associated with the Acheson process were mainly based on epidemiological studies, whereas the assessment of the whiskers--in the absence of epidemiological--was based on carcinogenicity bioassays and consideration of their physical properties. In view of the absence of epidemiological studies on carbon nanotubes and the limited information available from mechanistic data, the evaluations of single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes relied essentially on carcinogenicity bioassays.

Book Modified Silicon Carbide Whiskers

Book excerpt: Silicon carbide whisker-reinforced ceramic composites are fabricated in a highly reproducible manner by beneficating the surfaces of the silicon carbide whiskers prior to their usage in the ceramic composites. The silicon carbide whiskers which contain considerable concentrations of surface oxides and other impurities which interact with the ceramic composite material to form a chemical bond are significantly reduced so that only a relatively weak chemical bond is formed between the whisker and the ceramic material. Thus, when the whiskers interact with a crack propagating into the composite the crack is diverted or deflected along the whisker-matrix interface due to the weak chemical bonding so as to deter the crack propagation through the composite. The depletion of the oxygen-containing compounds and other impurities on the whisker surfaces and near surface region is effected by heat treating the whiskers in a suitable oxygen sparaging atmosphere at elevated temperatures. Additionally, a sedimentation technique may be utilized to remove whiskers which suffer structural and physical anomalies which render them undesirable for use in the composite. Also, a layer of carbon may be provided on the surface of the whiskers to further inhibit chemical bonding of the whiskers to the ceramic composite material.

Book Silicon Carbide Whisker Reinforced Ceramic Composites and Method for Making Same

Download or read book Silicon Carbide Whisker Reinforced Ceramic Composites and Method for Making Same written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present invention is directed to the fabrication of ceramic composites which possess improved mechanical properties especially increased fracture toughness. In the formation of these ceramic composites, the single crystal SiC whiskers are mixed with fine ceramic powders of a ceramic material such as Al.sub. 2 O.sub. 3, mullite, or B.sub. 4 C. The mixtures which contain a homogeneous disperson of the SiC whiskers are hot pressed at pressures in a range of about 28 to 70 MPa and temperatures in the range of about 1600.degree. to 1950.degree. C. with pressing times varying from about 0.75 to 2.5 hours. The resulting ceramic composites show an increase in fracture toughness of up to about 9 MP.am.sup. 1/2 which represents as much as a two-fold increase over that of the matrix material.

Book Silicon Carbide Whiskers for Composites

Download or read book Silicon Carbide Whiskers for Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide (SiC) whiskers have great potential as reinforcements for structural ceramic matrix composites with significantly improved fracture toughness and strength. Such whiskers, synthesized at Los Alamos by a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process, are single crystal fibers with diameters in the range of 0.1 to 10 .mu.m and lengths presently as long as 100 mm. They possess superb mechanical properties, with an average strength of 8.4 GPa (1,220,000 psi) and an average elastic modules of 580 GPa (84,000,000 psi), as well as excellent elevated temperature stability. Future possibilities include the synthesis of long SiC whiskers for continuous fiber composites, and other types of whisker materials to extend the range of new ceramic composite systems.
