Book Surface Chemistry of Silicon Anodes for Next generation Lithium ion Batteries

Download or read book Surface Chemistry of Silicon Anodes for Next generation Lithium ion Batteries written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Batteries play a critical role in modern society and will only increase in importance as electric vehicles and grid-scale storage applications continue to grow. Silicon is a material of great interest as an anode for future battery applications, as it offers the possibility of greatly increased battery capacities and reduced weights. This work investigates two methods in which silicon may find use in batteries. First, silicon was shown to be a viable anode in primary battery systems using carbon monofluoride as a high-energy cathode for extremely high-temperature environments such as deep mineshafts. The temperatures achieved in these studies were some of the highest ever observed for a functioning lithium battery. In addition, the fundamental surface chemistry of silicon as a rechargeable anode for safer lithium-ion batteries was also investigated. Organosilicon-based electrolytes offer much higher flash points than the current generation of electrolytes, but the surface chemistry of their solid-electrolyte interphase formation on the silicon anode surface remains relatively unexplored until now. Finally, this work also presents a method for creation and subsequent functionalization of graphitic nanopillars. These nanopillars may serve as a route to well-ordered graphene nanoplatelets of monodisperse size and controllable chemistry.

  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Lithium ion Batteries written by Perla B. Balbuena and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.

Book Lithium ion Batteries Based on Silicon Anode and Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Download or read book Lithium ion Batteries Based on Silicon Anode and Ionic Liquid Electrolytes written by Khryslyn Arano and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand and expanding applications of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) impose bigger requirements in terms of battery metrics. As a result, there has been a huge effort to develop the next-generation energy storage systems that possess high energy density, high cyclability, low cost, and increased safety. This work combines the benefits of silicon (Si) anode with very high theoretical capacity and ionic liquids (IL) with unique physicochemical properties, to achieve high energy density and safe LIBs. Electrochemical studies were carried out to investigate the performance of Si in highly concentrated IL electrolytes, which has hardly been investigated in the past. In conjunction with electrochemical cycling, interfacial studies were also carried out to investigate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and near-electrode structures. The cycling data revealed that the nature and structure of the IL and the electrolyte salt content greatly influence the electrochemical behaviour of the Si anode, favoring the use of phosphonium-based IL and highly concentrated electrolytes. Ex situ surface characterization provided evidence of a more efficient SEI for the said systems. The investigation of near-electrode structuring of the IL components also gave insight into their decomposition pathway, pointing to the higher susceptibility of dilute systems and pyrrolidinium-based electrolytes to degradation. The performance of Si in the IL electrolytes was also successfully demonstrated in full-cell configuration, showing their feasibility for practical use. Finally, solid-state electrolytes were prepared to create allsolid and safe batteries, but further research is necessary to achieve successful cycling.

Book Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems

Download or read book Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems written by H. U. Borgstedt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international seminar "Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems" was organized by the Institute of Materials and Solid State Research of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center (Karlsruhe, Federal Republic of Germany). The seminar was held at the Nuclear Engineering School of the center on March 24-26, 1981. The aim of the seminar was to give metallurgists, chemists,. and physicists working in different areas of the science and technology of liquid metals an opportunity to discuss the basic work and the need for further work in this field. Since the seminar was held near one of the laboratories which for the last few years has been engaged in liquid alkali metal studies, partic ipants also had an opportunity to observe modern equipment for liquid alkali metal research. Interest in the application of liquid metals as working fluids in energy production, conversion, and storage is increasing. The technology has already demonstrated its high standards, which make possible the operation of large sodium-cooled fast reactors. Past conferences have shown, however, that there is still a lack of basic knowledge and understanding. Therefore, the aim of the present seminar was to discuss basic work in detail, and most of the papers contributed to this objective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrochemical storage of energy has become essential in assisting the development of electrical transport and use of renewable energies. French researchers have played a key role in this domain but Asia is currently the market leader. Not wanting to see history repeat itself, France created the research network on electrochemical energy storage (RS2E) in 2011. This book discusses the launch of RS2E, its stakeholders, objectives, and integrated structure that assures a continuum between basic research, technological research and industries. Here, the authors will cover the technological advances as well as the challenges that must still be resolved in the field of electrochemical storage, taking into account sustainable development and the limited time available to us.
