Book Silica reinforced Ethylene propylene Diene epd Rubbers

Download or read book Silica reinforced Ethylene propylene Diene epd Rubbers written by Peter Dunn and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High quality ethylene-propylene diene (EPD) rubber vulcanizates can be produced by using hydrated silica as the reinforcing filler. Modification of EPD rubber by chemical promotors such as p-quinone dioxime and the use of silica activators such as polyethylene glycol gives compounds with an acceptable rate of cure. Hot mastication, especially in the presence of halogenated compounds, gives vulcanizates with good physical properties. Processing aids such as stearic acid may be used, and oilextended EPD rubber is a convenient plasticizer for silicareinforced compounds. To reduce costs, silica fillers can be extended with other such low-cost fillers as hard clay. EPD rubbers may also be blended with other elastomers. High quality silica-reinforced expanded EPD rubbers may be produced by conventional blowing agents and processing techniques. Silica-reinforced EPD rubbers crosslinked with organic peroxides give vulcanizates with good resistance to abrasion and compression set. EPD rubber vulcanizates have excellent resistance to ozone and fungi and, in the presence of ultraviolet screening agents, show good weathering properties. (Author).

Book A Practical Guide to Plastics Sustainability

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Plastics Sustainability written by Michel Biron and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2020-04-18 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Guide to Plastics Sustainability: Concept, Solutions, and Implementation is a groundbreaking reference work offering a broad, detailed and highly practical vision of the complex concept of sustainability in plastics. The book's aim is to present a range of potential pathways towards more sustainable plastics parts and products, enabling the reader to further integrate the idea of sustainability into their design process. It begins by introducing the context and concept of sustainability, discussing perceptions, drivers of change, key factors, and environmental issues, before presenting a detailed outline of the current situation with types of plastics, processing, and opportunities for improved sustainability. Subsequent chapters focus on the different possibilities for improved sustainability, offering a step-by-step technical approach to areas including design, properties, renewable plastics, and recycling and re-use. Each of these pillars are supported by data, examples, analysis and best practice guidance. Finally, the latest developments and future possibilities are considered. Approaches the idea of sustainability from numerous angles, offering practical solutions to improve sustainability in the development of plastic components and products Explains how sustainability can be applied across plastics design, materials selection, processing, and end of life, all set alongside socioeconomic factors Considers key areas of innovation, such as eco-design, novel opportunities for recycling or re-use, bio-based polymers and new technologies

Book Reinforcement of Ethylene Propylene Rubber EPR and Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber EPDM by Zinc Dimethacrylate

Download or read book Reinforcement of Ethylene Propylene Rubber EPR and Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber EPDM by Zinc Dimethacrylate written by Clare Wysocki and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The reinforcement of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) by zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) was investigated. Various levels of peroxide (dicumyl peroxide, DCP) and ZDMA were studied. Cure behavior, crosslink density, and tensile properties were determined. Infrared spectral analysis was used to examine cure chemistry. Electron microscopy was used to study morphology. Higher levels of peroxide and ZDMA increased the state of cure. While peroxide-cured EPR and EPDM showed simple cure behavior, more complex behavior was observed for the systems with ZDMA. A loss modulus peak observed early in cure was attributed to homopolymerization of ZDMA, followed by competing reactions of crosslinking and grafting. Reversion increased for higher levels of peroxide and ZDMA. This loss in stiffness at long cure times was attributed to a combination of thermal oxidative degradation, including the depolymerization of poly-ZDMA. An EPR/ZDMA compound containing no peroxide was found, nonetheless, to undergo substantial cure when heated long (months) after mixing. The observation of increased translucency in cured samples with increasing time between mixing and curing suggests ZDMA undergoes some time-dependent solubilization. Cure resulted in a mixed crosslink network of covalent and ionic crosslinks. Crosslink density increased with peroxide and ZDMA content. Relative portions of covalent and ionic crosslink densities were determined and indicate that competition exists between ZDMA reactions and covalent crosslinking, and that initiator radicals preferentially react with ZDMA. Tensile strength increased with increased ZDMA content and decreased peroxide content. This correlates with an increased portion of ionic crosslinks, owing to their more labile nature. Modulus increased with increased crosslink density, while strain at break decreased. Infrared spectral analysis suggests that in-situ reaction of ZDMA occurs in two stages. First, ZDMA reacts quickly to conversions of over 75%, followed by competing crosslinking reactions. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggest that ZDMA reacts upon cure to form poly-ZDMA, which insolubilizes and forms particles that aggregate together. Results from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggest poly-ZDMA domains phase separate to form a continuous phase consisting of aggregates on the order of 10 nm."--Abstract.
