The railroad first ran through the area in 1884, and the community was officially established in 1887. Blacksmith shops, livery stables, cotton gins, and sawmills were early resources that attracted trade. Lumber mills, furniture manufacturers, and a yarn plant came to town and supported its early industrialization. In 1972, Frances Bavier, better known as "Aunt Bee" from The Andy Griffith Show, retired from acting and bought a house in Siler City, where she lived the remainder of her days. Today, Siler City is a unique town that offers local residents and visitors a variety of activities, including an active artist community, Mount Vernon Springs, parks, and local sporting events at area high schools. Through this collection of historical photographs, Siler City showcases the rich industrial, commercial, and communal history of this small Southern town.

To answer this question, seven scholars lived for a year in five North Carolina communities. They observed public meetings of all sorts, had informal and formal interviews with people, and listened as people conversed with each other at bus stops and barbershops, soccer games and workplaces. Their collaborative ethnography allows us to understand how diverse members of a community not just the elite think about and experience “politics” in ways that include much more than merely voting. This book illustrates how the social and economic changes of the last three decades have made some new routes to active democratic participation possible while making others more difficult. Local Democracy Under Siege suggests how we can account for the current limitations of U.S. democracy and how remedies can be created that ensure more meaningful participation by a greater range of people. Book excerpt: With Latining America, Claudia Milian proposes that the economies of blackness, brownness, and dark brownness summon a new grammar for Latino/a studies that she names “Latinities.” Milian’s innovative study argues that this ensnared economy of meaning startles the typical reading practices deployed for brown Latino/a embodiment. Latining America keeps company with and challenges existent models of Latinidad, demanding a distinct paradigm that puts into question what is understood as Latino and Latina today. Milian conceptually considers how underexplored “Latin” participants––the southern, the black, the dark brown, the Central American—have ushered in a new world of “Latined” signification from the 1920s to the present. Examining not who but what constitutes the Latino and Latina, Milian’s new critical Latinities disentangle the brown logic that marks “Latino/a” subjects. She expands on and deepens insights in transamerican discourses, narratives of passing, popular culture, and contemporary art. This daring and original project uncovers previously ignored and unremarked upon cultural connections and global crossings whereby African Americans and Latinos traverse and reconfigure their racialized classifications.
