Book Silent Trumpets of Justice

Download or read book Silent Trumpets of Justice written by Gerald Anthony Foster and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1959 closing of public schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia, is an event which will forever serve as a cruel reminder of the ill-fated attempt to forcibly desegregate a school system in the midst of a small, rural, southern social order: a social order whose historical underpinnings were predicated on white supremacy and total subjugation of African-Americans. In 1992 two African-American educators, both of whom attended Virginia public schools and one of whom experienced firsthand the effect of the Prince Edward School closing, returned to Prince Edward county to assess the social and educational impact of the 1959 school closing on those who suffered the most from that event: the Black students, some of whom are often characterized as the "lost generation," and the teachers who valiantly fought on to provid ea semblance of education in spite of the loss of local tax dollars. -- From preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections from Friends and fellow Ministers I met The Reverend J. Samuel Williams, Jr., on the campus of Shaw University in 1959, and I am privileged to call him a friend for more than fifty years. Having known him as I have, I am not surprised but greatly impressed with the fact that he has seen fit to include the contributions of Black churches to the modern Civil Rights movement. He has chronicled the call of God and the response of humans for the sake of human decency with expertise and exactness in this moving book. It was my delight to have had dealings with his two most meaningful mentors, the late Reverend Drs. Vernon Johns and L. Francis Griffin, and I am sure that you will discover their role in the development of Brother Williams as he made contributions to the civil rights movement with his leadership, articulation and involvement of others in the struggle. In Exilic Existence, the reader will find several detailed accounts of the marriage of church and culture for the cause of decency and dignity among those who are too often considered the least and the left out in this society. Percy L. High--Durham, North Carolina It was my pleasure as a young college student attending the First Baptist Church in Farmville, Virginia to make the acquaintance of the Pastor, the Reverend Dr. J. Samuel Williams, Jr. Little did I know that I was in the presence of a Civil Rights activist with his finger on the pulse of the unrelenting, Movement. This historical record, Exilic Existence..., captures for future generations, important details disclosing and preserving the identities of individuals and documenting incidents which have contributed significantly to the report of our story in History. How fitting that the report is set straight by a Prophet from Prince Edward County. A must read for everyone who wants to know what really happened to bring us to this place in social justice and human equality. Dr. Carla E. Lightfoot, Immediate Past President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Richmond and Vicinity (2007-2010) Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Richmond Virginia Seminary

  • Author : Ryan Leif Hansen
  • Publisher : Fortress Press

Download or read book Silence and Praise written by Ryan Leif Hansen and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmology is a central focus in John’s Apocalypse, Ryan Leif Hansen argues, but not in the sense that John envisions a stable cosmos. Rather, John employs cosmological themes for persuasive purposes that include a critique of Roman imperial cultic discourse. Hansen’s argument requires a discussion of the apocalyptic genre and rhetoric, the ways in which apocalyptic literature makes meaning especially through the construction of symbolic worlds, and then a comparison of this means with cosmological themes in which eternal Rome lies at the center of the cosmos. John seeks to persuade his hearers that the world, as governed and sustained by Caesar and the Roman gods and perpetuated through the Roman cult and economy, is a false order, passing away in order that God’s new creation, narrated by truthful worship and costly witness to the Lamb, can emerge as gift. The book concludes with suggestions for fruitful conversation with recent work in apocalyptic theology.

Book Lift Up Your Voice Like a Trumpet

Download or read book Lift Up Your Voice Like a Trumpet written by Michael B. Friedland and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Supreme Court declared in 1954 that segregated public schools were unconstitutional, the highest echelons of Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish religious organizations enthusiastically supported the ruling, and black civil rights workers expected and actively sought the cooperation of their white religious cohorts. Many white southern clergy, however, were outspoken in their defense of segregation, and even those who supported integration were wary of risking their positions by urging parishioners to act on their avowed religious beliefs in a common humanity. Those who did so found themselves abandoned by friends, attacked by white supremacists, and often driven from their communities. Michael Friedland here offers a collective biography of several southern and nationally known white religious leaders who did step forward to join the major social protest movements of the mid-twentieth century, lending their support first to the civil rights movement and later to protests over American involvement in Vietnam. Profiling such activists as William Sloane Coffin Jr., Daniel and Philip Berrigan, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Eugene Carson Blake, Robert McAfee Brown, and Will D. Campbell, he reveals the passions and commitment behind their involvement in these protests and places their actions in the context of a burgeoning ecumenical movement.
