Book excerpt: "No way in hell you could survive 'out there' with six men. You couldn't live thirty minutes 'out there' with only six men." [pg. 13] In 1965 nearly four hundred men were interviewed and only thirty-two selected for the infant LRRP Detachment of the lst Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Old-timers called it the suicide unit. Whether conducting prisoner snatches, search and destroy missions, or hunting for the enemy's secret base camps, LRRPs depended on one another 110 percent. One false step, one small mistake by one man could mean sudden death for all. Author Reynel Martinez, himself a 101st LRRP Detachment veteran, takes us into the lives and battles of the extraordinary men for whom the brotherhood of war was and is an ever-present reality: the courage, the sacrifice, the sense of loss when one of your own dies. In the hills, valleys, and triple-canopy jungles, the ambushes, firefights, and copter crashes, LRRPs were among the best and bravest to fight in Vietnam.

Book No Longer Silent

Download or read book No Longer Silent written by Rev. Mike Beck and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QUOTES FROM THE CHAPTER, "LET'S BE REAL" Do we have any understanding of the un-churched culture in which we live and the way these people view the church? Do we spend intentional time cultivating relationships with non-Christian people, or is our attitude one of "they know where we are, and they'll come if they want to?" If the church is truly to experience a revival, we must seek to understand the needs and thinking of "unchurched Harry and Mary." We need to stop playing our pious, religious games and realize that the church is to be a haven for broken, hurting people who feel they don't have their lives all together. And if we look at the teachings of Jesus, He consistently taught that it was those people who felt "they had it all together" who in fact were farthest from God! In no way am I diminishing the importance of sound doctrine, but I have often laughingly said that "we will be surprised when we get to Heaven at some of the people living in our neighborhood!" We must acknowledge our own struggles with complex issues and, at times, admit that we don't have God in a neat box and therefore don't have all the answers. Although sound theology is important, my Bible says first and foremost that they will know we are Christians by our love! Christ said that He had come, not to "comfort the already comfortable", but to "preach good news to the poor...to proclaim recovery of sight to the blind...to release the oppressed...and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Is that our message as well? If not, then it's time for us to be real!

  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book The Silent Escape written by Lena Constante and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-04-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 1992 Association des Ecrivains de Langue Française Prix Européen "I have lived, alone, in a cell, 157,852,800 seconds of solitude and fear. Cause for screaming! They sentence me to live yet another 220,838,400 seconds! To live them or to die from them."--from The Silent Escape Victim of Stalinist-era terror, Lena Constante was arrested on trumped-up charges of "espionage" and sentenced to twelve years in Romanian prisons. The Silent Escape is the extraordinary account of the first eight years of her incarceration--years of solitary confinement during which she was tortured, starved, and daily humiliated. The only woman to have endured isolation so long in Romanian jails, Constante is also one of the few women political prisoners to have written about her ordeal. Unlike other more political prison diaries, this book draws us into the practical and emotional experiences of everyday prison life. Candidly, eloquently, Constante describes the physical and psychological abuses that were the common lot of communist-state political prisoners. She also recounts the particular humiliations she suffered as a woman, including that of male guards watching her in the bathroom. Constante survived by escaping into her mind--and finally by discovering the "language of the walls," which enabled her to communicate with other female inmates. A powerful story of totalitarianism and human endurance, this work makes an important contribution to the literature of "prison notebooks."

Book Silent Crusader

Download or read book Silent Crusader written by Cheryl Kantak and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an intimately personal memoir about a woman, Cindy, born deaf and with multiple other birth defects. Cindy was not expected to survive, yet she endured numerous surgeries and other medical procedures over the years, showing uncommon strength and determination. Now in her fifties, Cindy lives in her own home with supports and enjoys a happy and active life. This story is also about Cindy’s parents, devoted and committed to her and her sister Deb, who was also born with disabilities. Their parents stood toe-to-toe with Cindy against often flawed and intractable systems of support. They fought with and for Cindy to ensure a rewarding life for her and an impactful outcome that to this day benefits other individuals with disabilities. Along the way, author Cheryl Kantak tells of the journey their family took to get Cindy to where she is now. This book recounts setbacks and struggles related to misdiagnoses, educational biases against persons with disabilities, and facilitated communication, a controversial form of communication. Overcoming these and other challenges, Cindy’s strength and her parents’ resolve set pioneering legal precedent and paved the way for others like Cindy. But in the end, this is a story of love and a parents’ belief in their daughter, never wavering in recognizing her strengths and capabilities. It is a story of courage and perseverance. Although Cindy is deaf and has limited communication skills, her life has made a positive impact on the lives of many. She is a crusader even though she has never spoken a word.

This book is extremely intense and sections are extremely raw.” “Growing up, I always thought that the church, the Southern Black Church, was supposed to be the safest place on earth. Well, what a wake-up call.” Revenge, an airborne virus, can travel with a ravaging force that causes catastrophic damage. It can cause overwhelming, irreversible destruction to the life, lifestyle, and well-being of an individual or to a large group. Dexter B. Cavanaugh III, a well-dressed pit bull in a three-piece designer suit disguised as a successful legal gladiator, has a severe case of this disease, and he doesn’t want to be cured. On the contrary, the potency of his internal condition continues to grow day by day as it feeds on his relentless focus to seek justice. He is on a mission to get revenge for the death of his best friend, Patrick—a mission that is also fueled by a cultural plague that has been perpetuated in the Black Church for decades. His death would not be in vain. Dexter is complicated. The anal-retentive, overachieving, perfectionist as well as four of his close comrades have no shame in admitting that they definitely have their share of issues as a result of their provocative and tumultuous pasts. In his journey of seeking redemption, he confirms that sometimes you have to make someone go through hell and risk losing everything to get it. No one attacks a member of The Silent Fraternity without repercussions, even if he is hiding behind the sacred cloth. Hell hath no fiery like hurricane Dexter. This was personal, very personal. The Silent Fraternity, a moving account of a controversial yet unspoken social issue that has been brewing for decades. This book burns through a wide range of emotions.

For more than thirty years, Claude Ballard has been living at the Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel. A French pioneer of silent films who started out as a concession agent for the Lumière brothers, the inventors of cinema, Claude now spends his days foraging for mushrooms in the hills of Los Angeles and taking photographs of runaways and the striplings along Sunset Boulevard. But when a film history student comes to interview Claude about The Electric Hotel—the lost masterpiece that bankrupted him and ended the career of his muse, Sabine Montrose—the past comes surging back. In his run-down hotel suite, the ravages of the past are waiting to be excavated: celluloid fragments in desperate need of restoration, as well as Claude’s memories of the woman who inspired and beguiled him. The Electric Hotel is a portrait of a man entranced by the magic of moviemaking, a luminous romance, and a whirlwind trip through early cinema. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Book Silent Films Loud Music

  • Author : Phillip Johnston
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2021-08-12
  • ISBN : 1501366416

Download or read book Silent Films Loud Music written by Phillip Johnston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Films/Loud Music discusses contemporary scores for silent film as a rich vehicle for experimentation in the relationship between music, image, and narrative. Johnston offers an overview of the early history of music for silent film paired with his own first-hand view of the craft of creating new original scores for historical silent films: a unique form crossing musical boundaries of classical, jazz, rock, electronic, and folk. As the first book completely devoted to the study of contemporary scores for silent film, it tells the story of the historical and creative evolution of this art form and features an extended discussion and analysis of some of the most creative works of contemporary silent film scoring. Johnston draws upon his own career in both contemporary film music (working with directors Paul Mazursky, Henry Bean, Philip Haas and Doris Dörrie, among others) and in creating new scores for silent films by Browning, Méliès, Kinugasa, Murnau & Reiniger. Through this book, Johnston presents a discussion of music for silent films that contradicts long-held assumptions about what silent film music is and must be, with thought-provoking implications for both historical and contemporary film music.
