Download or read book A Marine s Journal written by Mike Holiday and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He had been given a break from work detail and was just finishing his smoke when he heard a loud explosion from third platoons area. As he ran up to see what was going on, several marines were already there standing around looking at a downed marine. Holiday rushed up to the scene and was stopped short in his tracks. There before him lay a man almost blown in half. He could see the mans spine and little else. He looked into the mans face, a young kid no older than he was himself. He saw the man look straight at him and then look away. Holiday watched the life leave the young mans eyes. He knew the exact instant the man had died. It left him cold and numbin shock. But Holiday found it fascinating to see life one second and then nothing the next. Holiday kept staring at the dead marine, pondering what he had just witnessed, vaguely aware of being given orders to remove the body. But Holiday was frozenunable to move to obey that order.

Download or read book Grassland Journal written by Chi Cheng and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the author's story written by tears. He is the center of this odyssey as a participant and an observer. It's a story about the loss of innocence, freedom, family, comfort, and family and about the good tradition of the Chinese culture that is slowly being lost. But it's also a story about gain and growth: gaining a few cultures and languages, new friends and trust, of experience and education, humility, of freedom, and regaining of self. Chi is not a hero in this narrative, just an ordinary man groping for meaning in his efforts to heal and help others. It is also a story of his own healing among the nomads of the grassland of Inner Mongolia. He survived and grew ever stronger in his own faith. It chronicles the tragedy of a Christian family during the chaos of China's Cultural Revolution launched by Mao Zedong in 1966. The author's parents were detained, beaten, and abused by Red Rebels in 1968, due to in 1952, they held a farewell party for Dr. Frank W. Price, a former pastor in Shanghai, and because during China's 1959 through 1962 national starvation, they received foreign food from their siblings living in the United States. In 1968, the author's fourteen-year-old sister's application to a reunion with her sister who lived near the northern national border was turned down, so she had to cut her fingertips, then wrote a pledge with the blood. The author records the primitive life of Mongolian nomads during his trip to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia to look for his two sisters and how he overcame difficulties with Mao Zedong badges as well as his unique acupuncture skills. Chinese words and names using the pinyin system are in BOLD font. Mongolian names and words are in italic font. There are twenty photos/illustrations.

Download or read book Prison Journal written by George Pell and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innocent! That final verdict came after George Cardinal Pell endured a gruelling four years of accusations, investigations, trials, public humiliations, and more than a year of imprisonment after being convicted by an Australian court of a crime he did not commit. Led off to jail in handcuffs, following his sentencing on March 13, 2019, the 78-year-old Australian prelate began what was meant to be six years in jail for "historical sexual assault offenses". Cardinal Pell endured more than thirteen months in solitary confinement, before the Australian High Court voted 7-0 to overturn his original convictions. His victory over injustice was not just personal, but one for the entire Catholic Church. Bearing no ill will toward his accusers, judges, prison workers, journalists, and those harbouring and expressing hatred for him, the cardinal used his time in prison as a kind of "extended retreat". He eloquently filled notebook pages with his spiritual insights, prison experiences, and personal reflections on current events both inside and outside the Church, as well as moving prayers. In this third and final volume, Cardinal Pell''s conviction is overturned by Australia''s High Court, and he is released from prison. As his appeal draws near, he grows in confidence that his case is strong and that his vindication is important not only for his own sake and the Church''s sake, but also for the sake of Australia''s legal system. While continuing his daily readings and devotions, and receiving hundreds of letters with offers of prayers and sacrifices on his behalf, the cardinal ponders the meaning of suffering in the life of the Christian, and he determines to accept with equanimity whatever outcome lies ahead.
