Then Silence: Uncovering the Disconnect in Team Commitments NASA, an icon of innovation and daring missions, faced a tragic reminder of what's at stake without a culture of open communication. The loss of Kalpana Chawla and her 6 other fellow crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia teaches us a critical lesson not just for space exploration, but for every time we come together as a team to create value for customers. Ever experienced a project planning or product refinement meeting where there were plenty of YESes but not matched by the quality of outcomes? Ever puzzled over why projects derail and deliveries are dragged despite apparent consensus? This book dives deep into the disconnect between the collective agreement in meetings and the reality of execution, exposing the silent productivity killer: the absence of psychological safety. It explores the reasons team members, despite seeming agreement, often refrain from voicing concerns, asking pivotal questions, or expressing doubts, leading to unanticipated hurdles in service or product delivery. But this narrative isn't just about identifying problems. It's a roadmap for leaders and teams committed to cultivating an environment where open communication isn't just encouraged—it's expected. Suitable for teams of all sizes, from startups to multinationals, this guide will likely help you bridge the gap between planning and action, transforming silent nods into meaningful engagement and repeatable results. Though the immediate consequences of lacking psychological safety might not mirror the scale of the Columbia Disaster, the prolonged impact on organizational outcomes and individual well-being can be just as profound. Join me in this journey towards fostering a culture where every voice matters, and every 'YES' counts towards collective success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Violence engages the harsh reality of malaria and its effects on marginalized communities in Tanzania. Vinay R. Kamat presents an ethnographic analysis of the shifting global discourses and practices surrounding malaria control and their impact on the people of Tanzania, especially mothers of children sickened by malaria. Malaria control, according to Kamat, has become increasingly medicalized, a trend that overemphasizes biomedical and pharmaceutical interventions while neglecting the social, political, and economic conditions he maintains are central to Africa’s malaria problem. Kamat offers recent findings on global health governance, neoliberal economic and health policies, and their impact on local communities. Seeking to link wider social, economic, and political forces to local experiences of sickness and suffering, Kamat analyzes the lived experiences and practices of people most seriously affected by malaria—infants and children. The persistence of childhood malaria is a form of structural violence, he contends, and the resultant social suffering in poor communities is closely tied to social inequalities. Silent Violence illustrates the evolving nature of local responses to the global discourse on malaria control. It advocates for the close study of disease treatment in poor communities as an integral component of global health funding. This ethnography combines a decade of fieldwork with critical review and a rare anthropological perspective on the limitations of the bureaucratic, technological, institutional, medical, and political practices that currently determine malaria interventions in Africa.

Book Controlling Immigration

Download or read book Controlling Immigration written by James F. Hollifield and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this classic work provides a systematic, comparative assessment of the efforts of major immigrant-receiving countries and the European Union to manage migration, paying particular attention to the dilemmas of immigration control and immigrant integration. Retaining its comprehensive coverage of nations built by immigrants—the so-called settler societies of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand— the new edition explores how former imperial powers—France, Britain and the Netherlands—struggle to cope with the legacies of colonialism, how social democracies like Germany and the Scandinavian countries balance the costs and benefits of migration while maintaining strong welfare states, and how more recent countries of immigration in Southern Europe—Italy, Spain, and Greece—cope with new found diversity and the pressures of border control in a highly integrated European Union. The fourth edition offers up-to-date analysis of the comparative politics of immigration and citizenship, the rise of reactive populism and a new nativism, and the challenge of managing migration and mobility in an age of pandemic, exploring how countries cope with a surge in asylum seeking and the struggle to integrate large and culturally diverse foreign populations.

Book Silent Statements

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a brief comparison with its canonical counterparts demonstrates that the Gospel of Luke is preoccupied with the power of spoken words; still, words alone do not make a language. Just as music without silence collapses into cacophony, so speech without silence signifies nothing: silences are the invisible, inaudible cement that hold the entire edifice together. Though scholars across diverse disciplines have analyzed silence in terms of its contexts, sources, and functions, these insights have barely begun to make inroads in biblical studies. Utilizing conceptual tools from narratology and reader-response criticism, this study is an initial exploration of largely uncharted territory – the various ways that narrative intersections of speech and silences function together rhetorically in Luke’s Gospel. Considering speech and silence to be mutually constituted in intricate and inextricable ways, Dinkler demonstrates that attention to both characters’ silences and the narrator’s silences helps to illuminate plot, characterization, theme, and readerly experience in Luke’s Gospel. Focusing on both speech and silence reveals that the Lukan narrator seeks to shape readers into ideal witnesses who use speech and silence in particular ways; Luke can be read as an early Christian proclamation – not only of the gospel message – but also of the proper ways to use speech and silence in light of that message. Thus, we find that speech and silence are significant matters of concern within the Lukan story and that speech and silence are significant tools used in its telling.

Book Invisible Men

  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 2011-12-20
  • ISBN : 1429974060
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Invisible Men written by Michael Addis and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning research psychologist Michael E. Addis identifies and provides answers surrounding the long-unspoken epidemic of silence and vulnerability in men Drawing on scientific research, as well as his own personal and clinical experience, award-winning research psychologist Michael E. Addis describes in this book an epidemic of personal, relational, and societal problems that are caused by the widespread invisibility of men's vulnerabilities. From increasing rates of suicide among men, to alcohol abuse, to violence and school shootings, his research reveals the continued cost of staying silent when emotional, physical, or spiritual pain enters men's lives. In the spirit of such bestsellers as William Pollack's Real Boys, Addis identifies the specific problems that result from men's silence and invisibility, what causes them, and how they can be changed. Addis provides readers with compelling stories of the causes and consequences of silence and invisibility in real men's lives. Invisible Men shows both male and female readers how they can break through the gauntlets that appear to protect men, but in reality cause severe harm to men, women, and families.
