Book excerpt: Born in Nicaragua, Rubén Darío is known as the consummate leader of the Modernista movement, an esthetic trend that swept the Americas from Mexico to Argentina at the end of the nineteenth century. Seeking a language and a style that would distinguish the newly emergent nations from the old imperial power of Spain, Darío’s writing offered a refreshingly new vision of the world—an artistic sensibility at once cosmopolitan and connected to the rhythms of nature. The first part of this collection presents Darío’s most significant poems in a bilingual format and organized thematically in the way Darío himself envisioned them. The second part is devoted to Darío’s prose, including short stories, fables, profiles, travel writing, reportage, opinion pieces, and letters. A sweeping biographical introduction by distinguished critic Ilan Stavans places Darío in historical and artistic context, not only in Latin America but in world literature. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book Empire of Sand

  • Author : Thomas E. Sheridan
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780816518586
  • Pages : 512 pages

Download or read book Empire of Sand written by Thomas E. Sheridan and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest days of their empire in the New World, the Spanish sought to gain control of the native peoples and lands of what is now Sonora. While missionaries were successful in pacifying many Indians, the Seris--independent groups of hunter-gatherers who lived on the desert shores and islands of the Gulf of California--steadfastly defied Spanish efforts to subjugate them. Empire of Sand is a documentary history of Spanish attempts to convert, control, and ultimately annihilate the Seris. These papers of religious, military, and government officials attest to the Seris' resilience in the face of numerous Spanish attempts to conquer them and remove them from their lands. Most of the documents are being made available for the first time, while the few that have been published are extremely difficult to find. They include early observations of the Seris by Jesuit missionaries; the collapse of the Seri mission system in 1748; accounts of the invasion of Tibur¢n Island in 1750 and the Sonora Expedition of 1767-1771; and reports of late-eighteenth-century Seri hostilities. Thomas Sheridan's introduction puts the documents in perspective, while his notes objectively clarify their significance. In a superb analysis of contact history, Sheridan shows through these documents that Spaniards and Seris understood one another well, and it was their inability to tolerate each other's radically different societies and cultures that led to endless conflict between them. By skillfully weaving the documents into a coherent narrative of Spanish-Seri interaction, he has produced a compelling account of empire and resistance that speaks to anthropologists, historians, and all readers who take heart in stories of resistance to oppression.

Book Delphi Collected Works of Gustavo Adolfo B cquer Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Collected Works of Gustavo Adolfo B cquer Illustrated written by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer is considered one of the first modern Spanish poets. His ‘Rimas’ (Rhymes) are celebrated for their sensitive, restrained and deeply subjective quality. Bécquer’s poetry tackles themes of love, disillusionment and loneliness, while exploring the mysteries of life and poetry. In contrast to the rhetorical and dramatic style of the Romantic period, Bécquer’s lyricism, in which assonance predominates, is simple and airy. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Bécquer’s collected works, with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Bécquer’s life and works * Concise introduction to Bécquer’s life and poetry * Images of how the poetry was first printed, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Multiple translations of the ‘Rimas’: Owen Innsly, 1882; Mason Carnes, 1891 * Includes the original Spanish texts, edited by Everett Ward Olmsted in 1909, with hyperlinked footnotes and a vocabulary glossary * Excellent formatting of the poems * Easily locate the poems you want to read * Also includes Bécquer’s seminal romantic and gothic legends * Features a bonus biography — discover Bécquer’s world CONTENTS: The Life and Poetry of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer Brief Introduction: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1891) by Mason Carnes From the Spanish of Gustavo Bécquer (1882) by Owen Innsly Poems of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer Rendered into English Verse (1891) by Mason Carnes The Fiction Romantic Legends of Spain (1909) The Spanish Texts Legends, Tales and Poems (1909) by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer The Biography Life of Bécquer (1907) by Everett Ward Olmsted Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to browse through our range of poetry titles or buy the entire Delphi Poets Series as a Super Set
