Book excerpt: Aristocrat, gambler, innovator and special forces legend, the life of David Stirling should need no retelling. His formation of the Special Air Service in the summer of 1941 led to a new form of warfare and Stirling is remembered as the father of special forces soldiering. But was he really a military genius or in fact a shameless self-publicist who manipulated people, and the truth, for this own ends? In this gripping and controversial biography Gavin Mortimer analyses Stirling's complex character: the childhood speech impediment that shaped his formative years, the pressure from his overbearing mother, his fraught relationship with his brother, Bill, and the jealousy and inferiority he felt in the presence of his SAS second-in-command, the cold-blooded killer Paddy Mayne. Stirling lived until old age, receiving a knighthood and plaudits from military forces around the world before his death in 1990. Yet as Mortimer dazzlingly shows, while Stirling was instrumental in selling the SAS to Churchill and senior officers, it was Mayne who really carried the regiment in the early days. Stirling was at best an incompetent soldier and at worst a foolhardy one, who jeopardised his men's live with careless talk and hare-brained missions. Drawing on interviews with SAS veterans who fought with Stirling and men who worked with him on his post-war projects, and examining recently declassified governments files about Stirling's involvement in Aden, Libya and GB75, Mortimer's riveting biography is incisive, bold, honest and written with his customary narrative panache. Impeccably researched and with the courage to challenge the mythical SAS 'brand', Mortimer brings to bear his unparalleled expertise as WW2's premier special forces historian to dig beneath the legend and reveal the real David Stirling, a man who dared and deceived.

A Game For Assassins: It's the early 1960's - the height of the Cold War - and agents of the British Intelligence are being targeted by an unknown team of assassins. In desperation, the agency sends in their best agent to hunt down the killers. Jack "Gorilla" Grant isn't your typical secret agent. Uncompromising and rough-edged, he doesn't fit in with the elitist and debonair intelligence agents. Soon, Jack is drawn into a deadly game where nothing is as it seems, and even the perfect spy can die in a wilderness of mirrors. Sentinel Five: The Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service has been assassinated, and the British government brought to its knees by a terrorist organization intent on unleashing a weapon of apocalyptic proportions. In desperation, a deniable team is assembled to hunt down the terrorists. Called back from obscurity to lead them is Jack “Gorilla” Grant, a freelancer with a Smith & Wesson’ 39 and cut-throat razor, who is ready to even the score in his own brutal fashion. But in game where power players, traitors and terrorists work hand in hand, the most serious threats sometimes come from within. The Sentinel Five team turns their gunsights to the East, to Asia, and enter a killing ground of death. Rogue Wolves: He is known as The Master. Spy, double agent, freelance assassin. He has been at the top of his game for the past thirty years, and worked for Nazis, Communists, Intelligence agencies and terrorists alike. No one knows his true identity, and the intelligence networks of several countries want him captured, interrogated and “Redacted”. Jack “Gorilla” Grant, now a contract agent for the French Secret Service, is assigned the job of tracking the Master down. Hot on his heels is an equally deadly and beautiful CIA bounty hunter, who is more than capable of hunting down both assassins. From France to the heartland of America and finally to a death island off the coast of Mexico, Rogue Wolves takes the anti-hero Gorilla Grant into the deepest heart of espionage darkness. Berlin Reload: When Jack “Gorilla” Grant's daughter is kidnapped in Rome, it is just the opening gambit in a series of events that pushes him back into the “Redaction” business that he once walked away from. Unseen forces are moving against Gorilla and dangerous enemies from his past are threatening his future, intent on turning a cold war into a hot war. But Gorilla has one rule; don’t mess with my family. And he’s willing to kill to enforce it. From the dangerous streets of 1960’s Berlin to a hit contract in Austria, and finally to a race against time in East Germany, Berlin Reload is an epic cold war spy story that spans the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, and throws James Quinn’s anti-hero Gorilla Grant into a mission where he may have to decide between the life of his daughter and the dawning of a new conflict between East and West.

Book excerpt: She’s fought against the darkness her whole life—but now she will discover what happens when that very darkness fights back in this thrilling follow-up to Christopher Swann’s Never Go Home and Never Turn Back, perfect for fans of Michael Farris Smith and Brian Panowich. For as long as she could remember, Susannah Faulkner knew that even though she lived a dangerous and violent life, she would try her best to do some good in the world. She’s hunted down evil men before, but the one man that puts fear into her heart, the one man who could destroy everything she loves, is the one man she cannot track down. And worst of all...she doesn’t know what will happen when she finds him. Or if he finds her first. Finn, an ex-soldier who served alongside Susannah’s father in Iraq, left Suzie with a simple choice a year ago: she could watch her family die one by one, or she could pursue him in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. The stubborn and skillful Suzie knows just how dangerous he is and how far he will go to complete his vengeance. And so the hunt begins. Her journey takes her across the United States, from the mountains of Arizona to the river bluffs of Missouri to the streets of Atlanta. Along the way, she contends with both new and old friends and foes: the vulnerable Brooke, determined to escape her own nightmare; her brother Ethan and his new girlfriend, a reminder of a different and more peaceful life; her uncle Gavin and his connections to the criminal underworld; the street-smart Ajax, a shadowy ally of convenience; and an FBI agent who could be friend, foe, or potential lover. Suzie’s instincts have gotten her this far—but will they be enough against her evil equal?

Book Remembering the Regiment the Experiences of a Kenya born English Lad in the Continued Fight Against the Terrorism of the Mau Mau Rebellion

Download or read book Remembering the Regiment the Experiences of a Kenya born English Lad in the Continued Fight Against the Terrorism of the Mau Mau Rebellion written by Leonard J. Gill and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya settlers, of European extraction, performed enthusiastically in a variety of roles in the Emergency Forces: Serving in Kenya Regiment companies; serving as patrol commanders attached to the Kings African Rifles with African troops, and with British regiments as guides, tracker handlers and advisers; as District Officers with the Kikuyu Guard as leaders and instructors in military skills; as pseudo Mau-Mau terrorists; as policemen; as pilots with the Kenya Police Air Wing; as criminal investigation and intelligence officers. They participated with good humor and enthusiasm at all levels and gave their expertise freely. Many were extraordinarily effective and many served in isolation from their superior officers, who relied on their initiative. Generally, the Kenya Regiment personnel received the cooperation of the local African populace, who accepted them as disciplined, reliable troops, keen to rid the country of the scourge of terrorism. There was a mutual respect between the Africans and the settler soldiers and their cooperation in anti-terrorist operations strengthened the bonds of comradeship and widened understanding between the races. After eighteen months military service as a patrol commander in the field I had gained special skills. The Mau-Mau terrorists had suffered heavy losses from desertions as well as casualties. The dwindling numbers of hard-core terrorists remaining in the forests had to be hunted down and this necessitated increased hunting skills. I had learned tracking skill from Ngalu, but there were areas where my knowledge was weak. I was pleased when I was sent to the Tracker School at Nanuki. The instructors had been picked from Kenya Regiment personnel whose civilian jobs were with the Game Department and the National Parks. I felt sure, under their instruction my skills would be augmented.
