Book A Silent Success

Download or read book A Silent Success written by Clifton Conrad and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's degrees have often been relegated to "second-class" or "consolation prize" status by administrators and faculty in higher education. But the first major study of master's education in more than thirty years recently made headlines by calling the degree the "silent success" of American higher education. In a lead editorial about the study, the Washington Post agreed that the master's degree is "academia's secret weapon" and an important "bridge to the rest of the world". In A Silent Success, Clifton Conrad, Jennifer Grant Haworth, and Susan Bolyard Millar present the results of their ground-breaking study of master's education in the United States. Basing their discussion on interviews with nearly 800 people in a variety of fields, the authors identify key decisions that shape master's experiences and develop a typology of master's programs. In doing so, they establish the surprising extent to which students, program alumni, faculty, and employers value master's education. They find widespread agreement about the positive outcomes of master's education: refined analytical skills, "big picture" perspectives, connections between theory and practice, and improved communication and professional skills. A Silent Success concludes with a discussion of the characteristics of high-quality programs and with specific recommendations for strengthening master's education. The authors urge administrators to recognize the importance of master's education and terminal master's programs. They call on state and federal policymakers to provide greater financial support for master's students - particularly in fields such as nursing, education, and environmental studies. They encourage employers toprovide flexible and supportive leave policies, as well as strong financial and in-house support. Finally, they invite students themselves to shape their master's experiences by joining student organizations, organizing colloquia, and nurturing collaborative learning experiences.

Book excerpt: Could we understand, in biological terms, the unique and fantastic capabilities of the human brain to both create and enjoy art? In the past decade neuroscience has made a huge leap in developing experimental techniques as well as theoretical frameworks for studying emergent properties following the activity of large neuronal networks. These methods, including MEG, fMRI, sophisticated data analysis approaches and behavioral methods, are increasingly being used in many labs worldwide, with the goal to explore brain mechanisms corresponding to the artistic experience. The 37 articles composing this unique Frontiers Research Topic bring together experimental and theoretical research, linking state-of-the-art knowledge about the brain with the phenomena of Art. It covers a broad scope of topics, contributed by world-renowned experts in vision, audition, somato-sensation, movement, and cinema. Importantly, as we felt that a dialog among artists and scientists is essential and fruitful, we invited a few artists to contribute their insights, as well as their art. Joan Miró said that “art is the search for the alphabet of the mind.” This volume reflects the state of the art search to understand neurobiological alphabet of the Arts. We hope that the wide range of articles in this volume will be highly attractive to brain researchers, artists and the community at large.

The protagonists – Anjali (a beautiful Brahmin girl) and Chetan (a sensible tribal boy) – were destined to tie the knot, in spite of inherent hurdles. This fiction is based on their unspoken love. Intense love for each other was ignited through an episode of novel-exchange between Anjali and Chetan. Both were shy and therefore never expressively communicated their love. It all happened in silence and without a word of love being spoken. It was truly ‘love in silence’.

Book Silent General

Book excerpt: This biography assesses Henry Horne's relationship with Haig and the Canadian Corps. It also evaluates his contribution to the technical advances of the artillery during the war and describes the battles which he conducted. It attempts to accord to Henry Horne the recognition and credit that he deserves but which has been withheld. Whether or not Henry Sinclair Horne was the 'silent' General he might lay claim to being the 'forgotten' General of the Western Front. His self-effacement in a profession not renowned for shrinking violets undoubtedly made its contribution to his relative anonymity-- he wrote no memoirs nor kept anything more than sketchy diaries.

Book excerpt: A troubled man travels to a mysterious town from his past after receiving a letter from his wife... who's been dead for years. And while our "hero" explores dark corridors and battles countless disturbing enemies, his journey offers more psychological horror than survival horror. Welcome to Silent Hill, where the monster is you. Silent Hill 2 doubles down on what made the first game so compelling: The feeling of being lost in a foggy, upside-down town as unsettling as it is familiar. Nearly two decades after first experiencing Silent Hill 2, writer and comedian Mike Drucker returns to its dark depths to explore how this bold video game delivers an experience that is tense, nightmarish, and anything but fun. With an in-depth and highly personal study of its tragic cast of characters, and a critical examination of developer Konami’s world design and uneven marketing strategy, Drucker examines how Silent Hill 2 forces its players to grapple with the fact that very real-world terrors of trauma, abuse, shame, and guilt are far more threatening than any pyramid-headed monster could ever be.

Download or read book Silent Hill written by Bernard Perron and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Hill: The Terror Engine, the second of the two inaugural studies in the Landmark Video Games series from series editors Mark J. P. Wolf and Bernard Perron, is both a close analysis of the first three Silent Hill games and a general look at the whole series. Silent Hill, with its first title released in 1999, is one of the most influential of the horror video game series. Perron situates the games within the survival horror genre, both by looking at the history of the genre and by comparing Silent Hill with such important forerunners as Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil. Taking a transmedia approach and underlining the designer's cinematic and literary influences, he uses the narrative structure; the techniques of imagery, sound, and music employed; the game mechanics; and the fiction, artifact, and gameplay emotions elicited by the games to explore the specific fears survival horror games are designed to provoke and how the experience as a whole has made the Silent Hill series one of the major landmarks of video game history.
