Book The Socially Involved Renunciate

Download or read book The Socially Involved Renunciate written by Kamala Elizabeth Nayar and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Socially Involved Renunciate is an in-depth analysis and an original English translation of the Siddh Goṣṭ, a fundamental philosophical text of the Sikh tradition. The work reflects the distinctive worldview of Sikhism, the only major Indian religion that does not regard asceticism as a legitimate path to liberation. Composed by Guru Nānak, a medieval, north Indian saint-poet and venerated founder of the Sikh tradition, the Siddh Goṣṭ is a dialogue between Guru Nānak and several Nāth yogis who had been pursuing a rigorous path of hath-yoga as renunciates of the material world. Through their dialogue, Guru Nānak teaches the Nāth yogis a spiritual path that also includes involvement in the social world and offers a practical way to achieve liberation. In The Socially Involved Renunciate, Kamala Elizabeth Nayar and Jaswinder Singh Sandhu provide background on Sikhism, highlight the ethical teachings expounded in the Siddh Goṣṭ, and demonstrate how Guru Nānak reconciles the polarities of the ascetic and householder ideals.

Book Confessions of an American Sikh

Download or read book Confessions of an American Sikh written by Gursant Singh and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arriving in India to get his teeth fixed, Gursant Singh decides he needs a Punjabi wife and becomes embroiled with Dadaji, Amritsar's notorious marriage broker. When their search for the perfect bride gets them both thrown into Amritsar's Central Jail, Gursant has to look deep within himself and question everything he has been taught about the Sikh path - Sikhi. Gursant's encounters with crooked lawyers, corrupt cops and the enigmatic Indian legal system lead him from the radiant spirituality of Amritsar's Golden Temple, through labyrinthine back streets, chaotic lawyers' offices and the Amritsar Police station to the tranquility of an isolated yoga ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas. On the way, we meet an exotic cast of characters. Some venal and manipulating, others compassionate and generous; all of whom bring to life the contradictions, idiosyncrasies and excitement of 21st Century India. Gursant chronicles his adventures in a fast-moving, warts-and-all style to give the reader a searingly honest picture of his own spiritual loss of innocence. It was during my time in the Amritsar Central Jail that I thought of writing this book. As soon as I had Internet access, I began to research what it might take to create a written record of my experiences. In effect, this book was created as it happened and certainly before I knew how it would finish. My hope was that I could help others to learn from my experiences; not only those in India, but also those within the 3HO spiritual organization to which I devoted thirty years of my life. India can be fun, entertaining and spiritually inspiring; at the same time it can be harsh and unforgiving, especially if you fall foul of the law, as I did. The spiritual path of the seeker can provide endless inspiration and satisfaction. But, like India, it can bring you face to face with your deepest fears and weaknesses. It is my fervent hope that others will learn from my mistakes and perhaps deepen their own spiritual experience by reading about what I had to go through. Thus this book is the story of my spiritual coming of age; my loss of innocence, if you will. I wish to offer my deepest gratitude to Akal Purkh, Waheguru, the Creator and Sustainer of the incredible universe in which we live. Let me also give thanks to Guru Nanak Sahib and his nine illustrious human successors. It is the grace of Guru Nanak that brought me to his teachings and it was his kindness that enabled me to find the true path of Sikhi. Finally I humbly offer obeisance to Siri Guru Granth Sahib, the word of God and living Guru for all Sikhs. Gursant Singh

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essential Gursikh Yogi: The Yoga and Yogis in the Past, Present and Future of Sikh Dharma is the first comprehensive study of the relationship between yogic thought, practice and yogis themselves with Sikhs in their 550-year tradition. It is based on some 300 quotes from Gurbani, including the entire Sidh Gosht and Anand Sahib, replete with harsh condemnations of shallow pretenders and evocations of profound states of yogic meditation. This study would not be complete without an historical examination of the first, formative years of Sikh Dharma from the birth of Guru Nanak to the installation of Siri Guru Granth Sahib as Guru. The chapter "The Discretionary Power of the Saint" touches on the fascinating topic of spiritual powers. "Places of the Gursikh Yogis" conveys the revealing legacy passed down to us in the form of place made holy through their association with the Guru in history. "Postures of the Gursikh Yogis" shows how the protocol still observed in Gurdwaras today has something to say about the liberating path of the sadhu. "Ishnaan Daan" describes the healthful effects, as well as the social and historical context of this essential practice. In "The Body of Meditation" we describe the physiology of meditation was we now understand it, using western terminology. Included are the life stories of eight renowned Sikh sadhus: Baba Buddha Ji, Baba Harnam Singh Ji and Baba Nand Singh Ji, Baba Attar Singh Ji and Sant Teja Singh Ji, Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh, Baba Darshan Singh Kuleewaalay Ji and Siri Singh Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi Ji. Our journey continues with quotes by Siri Singh Sahib Ji divided into four sections: "Religion and Religions", "The Rishees of the Hindus", "The Yoga of the Gusikh" and "The Dawning of an Age". The collection finishes with four sacred kriyas taught by Siri Singh Sahib Ji, four poems in their original Punjabi, translated into English, and "The Song of the Khalsa" composed by his student, Mukhia Singh Sahib Livtar Singh Khalsa.

Book Sikhism A Guide for the Perplexed

Download or read book Sikhism A Guide for the Perplexed written by Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sikhism's short but relatively eventful history provides a fascinating insight into the working of misunderstood and seemingly contradictory themes such as politics and religion, violence and mysticism, culture and spirituality, orality and textuality, public sphere versus private sphere, tradition and modernity. This book presents students with a careful analysis of these complex themes as they have manifested themselves in the historical evolution of the Sikh traditions and the encounter of Sikhs with modernity and the West, in the philosophical teachings of its founders and their interpretation by Sikh exegetes, and in Sikh ethical and intellectual responses to contemporary issues in an increasingly secular and pluralistic world. Sikhism: A Guide for the Perplexed serves as an ideal guide to Sikhism, and also for students of Asian studies, Sociology of Religion and World Religions.

Download or read book The Sikhs written by Patwant Singh and published by Image. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five hundred years ago, Guru Nanak founded the Sikh faith in India. The Sikhs defied the caste system; rejected the authority of Hindu priests; forbade magic and idolatry; and promoted the equality of men and women -- beliefs that incurred the wrath of both Hindus and Muslims. In the centuries that followed, three of Nanak's nine successors met violent ends, and his people continued to battle hostile regimes. The conflict has raged into our own time: in 1984 the Golden Temple of Amritsar -- the holy shrine of the Sikhs--was destroyed by the Indian Army. In retaliation, Sikh bodyguards assassinated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Now, Patwant Singh gives us the compelling story of the Sikhs -- their origins, traditions and beliefs, and more recent history. He shows how a movement based on tenets of compassion and humaneness transformed itself, of necessity, into a community that values bravery and military prowess as well as spirituality. We learn how Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Guru, welded the Sikhs into a brotherhood, with each man bearing the surname Singh, or "Lion," and abiding by a distinctive code of dress and conduct. He tells of Banda the Brave's daring conquests, which sowed the seeds of a Sikh state, and how the enlightened ruler Ranjit Singh fulfilled this promise by founding a Sikh empire. The author examines how, through the centuries, the Sikh soldier became an exemplar of discipline and courage and explains how Sikhs -- now numbering nearly 20 million worldwide -- have come to be known for their commitment to education, their business acumen, and their enterprising spirit. Finally, Singh concludes that it would be a grave error to alienate an energetic and vital community like the Sikhs if modern India is to realize its full potential. He urges India's leaders to learn from the past and to "honour the social contract with Indians of every background and persuasion."
