Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journal Computing has established a series of supplement volumes the fourth of which appears this year. Its purpose is to provide a coherent presentation of a new topic in a single volume. The previous subjects were Computer Arithmetic 1977, Fundamentals of Numerical Computation 1980, and Parallel Processes and Related Automata 1981; the topic of this 1982 Supplementum to Computing is Computer Algebra. This subject, which emerged in the early nineteen sixties, has also been referred to as "symbolic and algebraic computation" or "formula manipulation". Algebraic algorithms have been receiving increasing interest as a result of the recognition of the central role of algorithms in computer science. They can be easily specified in a formal and rigorous way and provide solutions to problems known and studied for a long time. Whereas traditional algebra is concerned with constructive methods, computer algebra is furthermore interested in efficiency, in implementation, and in hardware and software aspects of the algorithms. It develops that in deciding effectiveness and determining efficiency of algebraic methods many other tools - recursion theory, logic, analysis and combinatorics, for example - are necessary. In the beginning of the use of computers for symbolic algebra it soon became apparent that the straightforward textbook methods were often very inefficient. Instead of turning to numerical approximation methods, computer algebra studies systematically the sources of the inefficiency and searches for alternative algebraic methods to improve or even replace the algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop "Groups and Computations" took place at the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS) at Rutgers University in June 1995. This and an earlier workshop held in October 1991 was aimed at merging theory and practice within the broad area of computation with groups. The primary goal of the previous workshop was to foster a dialogue between researchers studying the computational complexity of group algorithms and those engaged in the development of practical software. It was expected that this would lead to a deeper understanding of the mathematical issues underlying group computation and that this understanding would lead, in turn, to faster algorithms. Comments and subsequent work indicated that this goal had been achieved beyond expectations. The second workshop was designed to reinforce the progress in these directions. The scientific program consisted of invited lectures and research announcements, as well as informal discussions and software demonstrations. The eight extended talks discussed randomization, permutation groups, matrix groups, software systems, fast Fourier transforms and their applications to signal processing and data analysis, computations with finitely presented groups, and implementation and complexity questions. As in the previous workshop, speakers ranged from established researchers to graduate students.

Book Intelligent Computer Mathematics

Download or read book Intelligent Computer Mathematics written by Jacques Carette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As computers and communications technology advance, greater opportunities arise for intelligent mathematical computation. While computer algebra, au- mated deduction and mathematical publishing each have long and successful histories, we are now seeing increasing opportunities for synergy among them. The Conferences on Intelligent Computer Mathematics (cicm 2009) is a c- lection of co-located meetings, allowing researchers and practitioners active in these related areas to share recent results and identify the next challenges. The speci?c areas of the cicm conferences and workshops are described below, but the unifying theme is the computerized handling of mathematical knowledge. The successful formalization of much of mathematics, as well as a better - derstanding of its internal structure, makes mathematical knowledge in many waysmore tractable than generalknowledge,as traditionally treatedin arti?cial intelligence. Similarly, we can also expect the problem of e?ectively using ma- ematical knowledge in automated ways to be much more tractable. This is the goal of the work in the cicm conferences and workshops. In the long view, so- ing the problems addressed by cicm is an important milestone in formulating the next generation of mathematical software.

Twelve invited papers on subjects of common interest for the two conferences are included in the proceedings and divided between this volume and the preceding volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science which is devoted to AAECC-6. This book contains contributions on the following topics: Symbolic, Algebraic and Analytical Algorithms, Automatic Theorem Proving, Automatic Programming, Computational Geometry, Problem Representation and Solution, Languages and Systems for Symbolic Computation, Applications to Sciences, Engineering and Education.

Book Symbolic Algebraic Methods and Verification Methods

Download or read book Symbolic Algebraic Methods and Verification Methods written by Götz Alefeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usual "implementation” of real numbers as floating point numbers on existing computers has the well-known disadvantage that most of the real numbers are not exactly representable in floating point. Also the four basic arithmetic operations can usually not be performed exactly. During the last years research in different areas has been intensified in order to overcome these problems. (LEDA-Library by K. Mehlhorn et al., "Exact arithmetic with real numbers” by A. Edalat et al., Symbolic algebraic methods, verification methods). The latest development is the combination of symbolic-algebraic methods and verification methods to so-called hybrid methods. – This book contains a collection of worked out talks on these subjects given during a Dagstuhl seminar at the Forschungszentrum für Informatik, Schlo€ Dagstuhl, Germany, presenting the state of the art.

Download or read book Essential Maple 7 written by Robert M. Corless and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an accelerated introduction to Maple for scientific programmers who already have experience in other computer languages (such as C, Pascal, or FORTRAN). It gives an overview of the most commonly used constructs and an elementary introduction to Maple programming. The new edition is substantially updated throughout. In particular, there are new programming features especially modules, nested lexical scopes, documentation features, and object-oriented support), a new solution of differential equations, and new plotting features. Review of Earlier Edition "It is especially nice for people like us, who have done some C and FORTRAN programming in our time, but would like to take better advantage of a tool like Maple. It discusses things of key importance to a scientific programmer and does not go on and on with things you'd never use anyway. The examples are terrific--beyond description. I have informed my colleagues here that this is a must-have..." (Brynjulf Owren, Department of Mathematical Sciences, The Norwegian Institute of Technology)
