Download or read book Jim Crow Campus written by Joy Ann Williamson-Lott and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-researched volume explores how the Black freedom struggle and the anti–Vietnam War movement dovetailed with faculty and student activism in the South to undermine the traditional role of higher education and bring about social change. It uses the battles between students, faculty, presidents, trustees, elected officials, and funding agencies to explain how Black and White southern campuses transformed themselves into reputable academic centers. No matter the type of institution, these battles represented cracks in the edifice of the Old South and precipitated wide-ranging changes in southern higher education and society as well. This thought-provoking history offers scholars and others interested in institutional autonomy and the value of civil society a deep understanding of the central role that institutions of higher education can play in social and political change and the vital importance of independent institutions during times of national crisis. “The riveting prose and well-researched narrative tell the stories of the past while also teaching lessons for today.” —Marybeth Gasman, University of Pennsylvania “A must-read for every serious student of higher education, academic freedom, free speech, civil rights, student protest, and southern history.” —Robert Cohen, New York University “Takes us back to a recent period in the American South in which the suppression of speech was commonplace in government and in the routines of everyday life.” —James D. Anderson, University of Illinois

Download or read book The Courage for Change written by Matthew Laban Luhanga and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African universities including the University of Dar es Salaam faced major resource constraints in the 1970's and 1980's. These constraints had a negative impact on higher education in Africa leading to a decline in the quality of education provided, stagnant or falling enrolments in the face of rapidly expanding populations, deteriorating infrastructure and staff exodus to greener pastures. Written by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam 1991-2007 this book captures the achievements which were engineered under his leadership to transform the University into an institution which would be better placed to meet the development needs of Tanzania in the 21st century. The book covers the bleak atmosphere prevailing when the author took over as Vice Chancellor in 1991, transformation achievements in the academic, finance and gender aspects, a sampling of the administrative challenges faced and some of the unfinished business which was passed on to succeeding Vice Chancellor.

Download or read book Radical Volunteers written by Katherine J. Ballantyne and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Radical Volunteers tells the largely unknown story of southern student activism in Tennessee between the Brown decision in 1954 and the national backlash against the Kent State University shootings in May 1970. As one of the first statewide studies of student activism-and one of the few examinations of southern student activism-it broadens scholarly understanding of New Left and Black student radicalism from its traditionally defined hotbeds in the Northeast and the West Coast. By incorporating accounts of students from both historically Black and predominantly white colleges and universities across Tennessee, this research places events that might otherwise appear random and intermittent into conversation with one another. This methodological approach reveals that students' joined organizations and became activists in an effort to assert their autonomy and, as a result, student power became a rallying cry across the state. It illuminates a broad movement comprised of many different sorts of students-white and Black, private and public, western, middle, and east Tennesseans. Importantly, Ballantyne doesn't confine her analysis to just campuses. Indeed, Radical Volunteersalso situates campus activism with their broader communities. Tennessee student activists built upon relationships with Old Left activists and organizations, thereby fostering their otherwise fledgling enterprises, and creating the possibility for radical change in the politically-conservative region. But framing student activism over a long period of time across Tennessee as a whole reveals disjuncture as much as coherence in the movement. Though all case studies contain particular and representative features, Tennessee's diversity lends itself well to a study of regional variations. Though outnumbered, Tennessee student activists secured significant campus reforms, pursued ambitious community initiatives, and articulated a powerful countervision for the South and the United States"--

Download or read book Israeli Community Action written by Paula Kabalo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating history of how average citizens banded together to cope and rebuild in the wake of the 1948 War. When the 1948 Israeli War of Independence broke out, population centers were rocked by sniper fire, bombings, and roadside ambushes. As the fighting moved out of the cities into desert areas, private citizens and community organizations left behind organized to revitalize and restore life in their devastated communities. In Israeli Community Action, Paula Kabalo presents a vivid portrait of these civilians who strove to help each other cope with the realities of war. Kabalo explores how civilian militias were recruited, how neighborhoods were protected, how older populations were enlisted into the war effort, and how women were organized to provide medical aid or establish refugee centers. She demonstrates that each phase of the war brought along new challenges to the population of the young state of Israel, but she also illuminates how the engagement of Israelis in community efforts brought them together and shored them up to face the future in their new country.
