Book Acoustic Niche Hypothesis and the Role of the Social Environment in Red Squirrel Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus Territorial Vocalizations

Download or read book Acoustic Niche Hypothesis and the Role of the Social Environment in Red Squirrel Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus Territorial Vocalizations written by Maggie Bain and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acoustic Niche Hypothesis proposes that during communication it is beneficial to occupy an 'acoustic niche' different from other organisms in the environment by producing calls that are acoustically distinct from those around them. I hypothesized that red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) have territorial vocalizations ('rattles') that occupy different acoustic niches from their conspecific neighbours, providing benefits in resource acquisition and overwinter survival. I recorded rattles from 129 adult red squirrels to compare acoustic dissimilarity between individuals. Acoustic properties were repeatable within individuals, meaning red squirrels have uniquely identifiable acoustic signatures during territory defense. Contrary to predictions of the ANH, individual rattles were no more distinct from neighbours than other squirrels in the population, and dissimilarity did not provide detectable survival benefits. I found evidence that squirrels with higher pulse rate dissimilarity between individuals tended to have larger hoards, but due to marginal significance level, it should be interpreted with caution.

Download or read book Mammal Societies written by Tim Clutton-Brock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to integrate our understanding of mammalian societies into a novel synthesis that is relevant to behavioural ecologists, ecologists, and anthropologists. It adopts a coherent structure that deals initially with the characteristics and strategies of females, before covering those of males, cooperative societies and hominid societies. It reviews our current understanding both of the structure of societies and of the strategies of individuals; it combines coverage of relevant areas of theory with coverage of interspecific comparisons, intraspecific comparisons and experiments; it explores both evolutionary causes of different traits and their ecological consequences; and it integrates research on different groups of mammals with research on primates and humans and attempts to put research on human societies into a broader perspective.

Book Individual Variation in the Dear Enemy Phenomenon Via Territorial Vocalizations in Red Squirrels

Download or read book Individual Variation in the Dear Enemy Phenomenon Via Territorial Vocalizations in Red Squirrels written by Jack G. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Territoriality arises when the benefits of exclusive access to resources exceed the costs of defense. Behavioural plasticity increases the net benefits of territoriality by reducing defensive effort, often through the dear enemy phenomenon where familiarity reduces intrusion risk. Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) follow the dear enemy phenomenon, but the mechanism by which red squirrels recognize conspecifics is unknown. I hypothesized that they use territorial calls, and predicted that familiar calls would better deter intruders than unfamiliar calls. I temporarily removed squirrels from their territories and replaced them with a speaker broadcasting the owner's call, an unfamiliar call, or silence. Owner calls did not more effectively repel intruders than unfamiliar calls. However, intruder identity varied: unfamiliar neighbours intruded during owner playback, but familiarity did not affect intrusions during unfamiliar playback. Individual variation in familiarity and changes in population density and composition can affect the strength and detectability of dear enemy effects.

Book Animal Behavior

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ken Yasukawa

  • Release : 2014-01-22
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1165 pages

Download or read book Animal Behavior written by Ken Yasukawa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 1165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover why animals do what they do, based on their genes, physiologies, cultures, traditions, survival and mating advantages, and evolutionary histories—and find out how studying behavior in the animal world helps us understand human behavior. The three volumes of Animal Behavior: How and Why Animals Do the Things They Do cover the breadth of the field, addressing causation, development, function, and evolution in a wide range of animals, from invertebrates to humans. Inspired by Nobel laureate Nikolaas Tinbergen's work, the first two volumes follow Tinbergen's four classic questions of animal behavior, while the third volume supplies integrated examples of Tinbergen's investigative process applied in specific cases. Written in an engaging, accessible manner ideal for college students as well as general audiences, this evidence-based collection provides a fascinating tour of animal behaviorists' findings, such as how animal communication can be truthful or deceitful, the deadly serious business behind clashes in the "battle of the sexes," and how documentation of animal behavior can lead to a deeper understanding of human behavior. Each chapter provides both historical background and information about current developments in animal behavior knowledge.

Book The Functions and Mechanisms of Predator associated Vocalisations in North American Red Squirrels Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus

Download or read book The Functions and Mechanisms of Predator associated Vocalisations in North American Red Squirrels Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus written by Shannon Marie Digweed and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American red squirrels are a solitary, territorial species that confront various predators. Previous research proposed that squirrels produce predator-specific, referential 'seet' and 'bark' alarm calls to aerial and ground predators, respectively. To test this hypothesis, I examined alarm call production during natural encounters with predators, conspecific intruders and in a series of predator simulation experiments. Call production patterns were consistent across all types of disturbance and involved protracted bouts where both call types were inter-mixed. Hence, the call types were not predator-specific but rather their patterning reflected the persistence of disturbances of any type. Tests of alternative call functions further indicated that calls were not actually directed at conspecifics, but rather at predators and intruders and might function to deter or repel them directly. These outcomes are consistent with life-history details of red squirrels and contradict the proposal that this species produces predator-specific, referential alarm calls.

Book The Evolution of Senescence in the Tree of Life

Download or read book The Evolution of Senescence in the Tree of Life written by Richard P. Shefferson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing theories on the evolution of senescence assume that senescence is inevitable in all organisms. However, recent studies have shown that this is not necessarily true. A better understanding of senescence and its underlying mechanisms could have far-reaching consequences for conservation and eco-evolutionary research. This book is the first to offer interdisciplinary perspectives on the evolution of senescence in many species, setting the stage for further developments. It brings together new insights from a wide range of scientific fields and cutting-edge research done on a multitude of different animals (including humans), plants and microbes, giving the reader a complete overview of recent developments and of the controversies currently surrounding the topic. Written by specialists from a variety of disciplines, this book is a valuable source of information for students and researchers interested in ageing and life history traits and populations.
