Book Signals from a Lampless Beacon Their Burdens Lifted

Download or read book Signals from a Lampless Beacon Their Burdens Lifted written by Paul Traywick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN THIS his second novel, sequel to the first but entirely readable as it stands alone, Paul Traywick continues the stories of the women and men who are his characters ("They are all 'main characters' "), and develops the themes of loss, love, madness, death, and, chiefly, of man's opportunity to "lift up his heart," a need so desperate in our world today...as it has likely been always , will likely always be. The expanded perception of this world, of worlds beyond it, and glimpses of a wholly transcendent yet contrarily accessible realm abide continuously above the broad but intense array of human events; above exulting, striving, enduring people; above brightly living places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-dark lamp is rekindled. The South is unshrouded from the Gothic cloth woven by so many poets, dramatists, and novelists of stature. Characters share their obsessive lunacies and tragic error with the rest of humankind; their heritage of cultivation, moral strength, and compassion is allowed to stand forth in a chronicle of two races, of three families, of four generations, beginning in Wartime of 1941-1945. Abduction aboard a U-boat; violation, suicide, and intimations of redemption; global amnesia, its complications, its release; extortion by a priest prepared-he supposes-to commit murder in the process; falling in love; losing one's love; near-drowning at the climax of an idiosyncratic deer-shoot-these are elements of a story punctuated by homilies from a clergyman wandering quietly away from Christian orthodoxy toward heresy...or toward Apollonian light. If the story ends, its symbols and themes need not; no more than ends Mr. Benny Ormond, veteran of the Great War who has escaped so many threats to life to which those around him have succumbed that he comes to suspect, against his better judgement, that he is destined not to see death. Throughout, the reader is directed away from the sense of man's possession of God to a beginning grasp of God as Self-transcendent...leaving an apparent emptiness, into which, however, for the watchful, signals pour, saying, "Lift up your Hearts."

Download or read book Signals from a Lampless Beacon written by Paul Traywick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of that novel, Beasts of Burden, begins: Subtle moral conundrums stir this luminous saga of genteel Southern society in the mid-20th century, and ends: An engrossing social tapestry, filled with quiet spiritual dramas. Kirkus Reviews The saga, which chronicles, primarily, three families, two races, and four generations, was brought forward in the second novel, Their Burdens Lifted, published in 2010. It is completed, with all narrative, moral, and philosophical strands brought together, in the present book, A Great City. Traywick has stated that he intends to publish no further novel. Whether this marks the end of his effort as a writer remains to be seen. He will certainly pursue his preferred pastimes: Carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, masonry, the study of Old English, and painting (pictures, not walls). Traywick lives with his wife of 45 years in the mountains of Western North Carolina in summer, in winter in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. They have four children and, at this time, six grandchildren.

Download or read book The God Chasers written by Tommy Tenney and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A God chaser is a person whose passion for God's presence presses him to chase the impossible in hopes that the uncatchable might catch him. A child chases a loving parent until, suddenly, the strong arms of the father enfold the chaser. The pursuer becomes the captive; the pursued the captor. Paul put it this way: "I chase after that I may catch that which apprehended me" (Phil. 3:12). Job was a God chaser. He said, "Oh that I knew where I might find Him!" David was one; he said, "My soul followeth hard after Thee." Paul was one too: "That I may know Him..." The passionate paths of God chasers can be traced across the pages of history from Moses the stutterer, David the singer, and Paul the itinerant preacher, to contemporaries like A.W. Tozer, Leonard Ravenhill, and countless others who share one common bond: an insatiable hunger to know their Lord. These are people whose relentless, passionate pursuit of Christ often made them appear foolish in the eyes of others. Yet, having tasted His goodness and glimpsed the invisible, they could be satisfied with nothing less. Add your name to the list...become a God chaser. Who know? You might be one whom He catches.

This book was released on 1866 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866) is the first book of poetry published by American author Herman Melville. The volume is dedicated "To the Memory of the Three Hundred Thousand Who in the War For the Maintenance of the Union Fell Devotedly Under the Flag of Their Country" and its 72 poems deal with the battles and personalities of the American Civil War and their aftermath. Critics at the time were at best respectful and often sharply critical of Melville's unorthodox style. The book had sold only 486 copies by 1868 and recovered barely half of its publications costs.[1] Not until the latter half of the twentieth century did Battle-Pieces become regarded as one of the most important group of poems on the American Civil War.

Book Marxist Film Theory and Fight Club

Download or read book Marxist Film Theory and Fight Club written by Anna Kornbluh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Kornbluh provides an overview of Marxist approaches to film, with particular attention to three central concepts in Marxist theory in general that have special bearing on film: “the mode of production,” “ideology,” and “mediation.” In explaining how these concepts operate and how they have been used and misused in film studies, the volume employs a case study to exemplify the practice of Marxist film theory. Fight Club is an exceptionally useful text with which to explore these three concepts because it so vividly and pedagogically engages with economic relations, ideological distortion, and opportunities for transformation. At the same time, it is a very typical film in terms of the conditions of its production, its marketing, and its popularity. Adapted from a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, the film is a contemporary classic that has lent itself to significant re-interpretation with every shift in the political economic landscape since its debut. Marxist Film Theory and Fight Club models a detailed cinematic interpretation that students can practice with other films, and furnishes a set of ideas about cinema and society that can be carried into other kinds of study, giving students tools for analyzing culture broadly defined.
