Download or read book SIGMA Phi Epsilon Journal Vol 31 written by F. James Barnes Ii and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 31: February 1934 I have gone to the South for a Sig Ep center, burly Talmadge Maples, leader of the University of Ten nessee gridders. Maples, all-southern pivot, received deserved recognition throughout the nation's Sports circles for his magnificent exhibition of center play on a team that for some strange reason has not received the attention it has certainly merited. It was something in the nature of a mental Shake up for me when I learned that the Vols had lost only a half dozen games during eight years of consistent nine and ten game schedules which included Vanderbilt, Duke, Alabama, Louisiana State, Kentucky, F lor ida and others in the deadly class of heavy weights. Maples, although handicapped by injuries for a part of the season played his usual flashing, slashing pivotal game when he was in there. Maples is the instinctive type of center. From authenticated reports he appears to be a replica of Jack Heaphy, decade-ago Boston College center, who guessed plays before the opponents' Signals were called. Offensively Maples was ag gressive and a tower of Strength on the defense. He was choice of the United Press for its all-southern eleven and rated third string center on the Central Press All team compiled by men who should know captains of college teams all over the coun try. In this compilation he Was runner up to Michigan's great Bernard and Ford ham's Del Isola. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This might imply that I did. Not understand the type of men my fraternity desired. Even so, the Chapters in question should have deigned to recognize my good intentions. But happily, I was not far wrong in my judgment, for the majority of these men were accepted by the respective Chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 28: May 1931 In broadcasting a talk, my advice is to stand unless you are physically unable to bear the strain. I hear that Heywood Broun drapes himself all over a couch but Comrade Broun may have the feet of an athlete or some other horrible malady which prevents him from drawing his graceful form into the perpendicular. And, ask for the microphone to be placed near the studio clock. Those who use their own watches almost invariably are stricken with the horrible thought that perhaps their beloved pocket time, pieces are slow or.fast and once the notion creeps into the daylight of con. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 3: December 25, 1905 The journal, however. Appeals to every member, actiye or Alumnus. To contribute to its support, and every one of them with a spark of fraternal feeling, would do so. But in return for the support of the Alumni. Why does not the journal devote some space to items about the doing of the Alumni? The editor very creditably gets after the Chapters who are delinquent with their letters, and chastises them with the big stick, but after all, the Chapter letter is of precious little interest to the Alumnus who may have left the college acouple of years or so ago, when he reads that the Chapter he was once connected with, has pledged two new men, elected one of their brothers on the football team. Or that another won the prize for the best essay. And so on; still he is expected to loyally support the paper. The jour nal would be doubly interesting to me, as one of its sub scribers, if I read in its pages, an occasional item about the brothers Who graduated with me; also the brothers Who have graduated from time to time. Since then, Why should they be relegated to utter oblivion just the moment they are no longer actual members Of any particular Chapter?
