Book Interacting Electrons and Quantum Magnetism

Download or read book Interacting Electrons and Quantum Magnetism written by Assa Auerbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the excitement and rapid pace of developments, writing pedagogical texts has low priority for most researchers. However, in transforming my lecture l notes into this book, I found a personal benefit: the organization of what I understand in a (hopefully simple) logical sequence. Very little in this text is my original contribution. Most of the knowledge was collected from the research literature. Some was acquired by conversations with colleagues; a kind of physics oral tradition passed between disciples of a similar faith. For many years, diagramatic perturbation theory has been the major theoretical tool for treating interactions in metals, semiconductors, itiner ant magnets, and superconductors. It is in essence a weak coupling expan sion about free quasiparticles. Many experimental discoveries during the last decade, including heavy fermions, fractional quantum Hall effect, high temperature superconductivity, and quantum spin chains, are not readily accessible from the weak coupling point of view. Therefore, recent years have seen vigorous development of alternative, nonperturbative tools for handling strong electron-electron interactions. I concentrate on two basic paradigms of strongly interacting (or con strained) quantum systems: the Hubbard model and the Heisenberg model. These models are vehicles for fundamental concepts, such as effective Ha miltonians, variational ground states, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and quantum disorder. In addition, they are used as test grounds for various nonperturbative approximation schemes that have found applications in diverse areas of theoretical physics.

Book Quantum Non linear Sigma Models

Download or read book Quantum Non linear Sigma Models written by Sergei V. Ketov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-14 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a systematic presentation of the modern quantum field theory of non-linear sigma-models. These models are very popular in theoretical high energy physics, string theory, and statistical physics. The geometric and quantum renormalization properties of the most general non-linear sigma-models are considered in detail within the framework of quantum perturbation theory. The main applications to be considered in the book can be found in string theory, conformal field theory, and general relativity.

Book Super Field Theories

    Book Details:
  • Author : H.C. Lee
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Super Field Theories written by H.C. Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Super Field Theory Workshop, held at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada July 25 - August 5, 1986 was originally intended to be a sequel to the 1983 Chalk River Workshop on Kaluza-Klein Theories and the 1985 Workshop on Quantum Field Theories held at the University of Western Ontario. The scope of the workshop was therefore not to be very big, with a program of about 20 papers, an anticipated 30 to 45 participants, and with much time scheduled for discussion and personal contact. These goals were soon changed in the face of wide interest in the workshop, both for participation and for giving talks, so that the workshop materialized with about 90 participants and 40 talks. This volume contains the texts, some considerably expanded from the oral version, of most of the talks pre sented at the workshop. Not included are a few talks whose manuscripts were not made available to the editors. In the last few years the subject of particle physics and unified field theory has developed in a way not witnessed in the last fifty years: a confluence with mathematics, especially in geometry, topology and algebra at an advanced level. This has vastly expanded the horizon of the disci pline and heightened the expectation that a true understanding of the fun damental laws of physics may soon be within reach. Most aspects of this new development are covered, many in pedagogical detail, by articles in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers together established ideas and applications of sigma models and presents them together with modern applications to provide a unified and complete view of simple sigma models and the role they play in model building in field theoretical methods in elementary particle physics. The book is written for both mathematicians and physicists and is aimed at graduate students and researchers in theoretical particle physics who are interested in sigma models and those working in the general area of harmonic maps in pure mathematics.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcos Mariño
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2015-09-03
  • ISBN : 1316368548
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Instantons and Large N written by Marcos Mariño and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly pedagogical textbook for graduate students in particle, theoretical and mathematical physics, explores advanced topics of quantum field theory. Clearly divided into two parts; the first focuses on instantons with a detailed exposition of instantons in quantum mechanics, supersymmetric quantum mechanics, the large order behavior of perturbation theory, and Yang–Mills theories, before moving on to examine the large N expansion in quantum field theory. The organised presentation style, in addition to detailed mathematical derivations, worked examples and applications throughout, enables students to gain practical experience with the tools necessary to start research. The author includes recent developments on the large order behavior of perturbation theory and on large N instantons, and updates existing treatments of classic topics, to ensure that this is a practical and contemporary guide for students developing their understanding of the intricacies of quantum field theory.

Book New Theoretical Approaches to Strongly Correlated Systems

Download or read book New Theoretical Approaches to Strongly Correlated Systems written by Alexei M. Tsvelik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the physics of strongly correlated systems was considered a theorists' playground, right at the border with pure mathematics, where physicists from the `real world' did not venture. The time has come, however, when healthy physics cannot exist without these techniques and results. Lectures on selected topics in the theory of strongly correlated systems are here presented by the leading experts in the field. Topics covered include a use of the form factor approach in low-dimensional systems, applications of quantum field theory to disorder, and dynamical mean field theory. The main divisions of the book deal with: I) Quantum Critical Points; (II) Strongly Correlated One-Dimensional Systems; (III) Strong Correlations and Disorder; and (IV) Dynamical Mean Field Theory.
