Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This psychologically penetrating revisionist account of the life and rule of Rusia's 18th-century Tsar-reformer develops an important theme - that is, what happens when the drive for "progress" is linked to an autocratic, expansionist impulse rather than to a larger goal of human emancipation? And, what has been the price of power - both for Peter and for Russia?
Download or read book Sentience written by Nicholas Humphrey and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a quest to uncover the evolutionary history of consciousness from one of the world's leading theoretical psychologists. We feel, therefore we are. Conscious sensations ground our sense of self. They are crucial to our idea of ourselves as psychic beings: present, existent, and mattering. But is it only humans who feel this way? Do other animals? Will future machines? Weaving together intellectual adventure and cutting-edge science, Nicholas Humphrey describes in Sentience his quest for answers: from his discovery of blindsight in monkeys and his pioneering work on social intelligence to breakthroughs in the philosophy of mind. The goal is to solve the hard problem: to explain the wondrous, eerie fact of “phenomenal consciousness”—the redness of a poppy, the sweetness of honey, the pain of a bee sting. What does this magical dimension of experience amount to? What is it for? And why has it evolved? Humphrey presents here his new solution. He proposes that phenomenal consciousness, far from being primitive, is a relatively late and sophisticated evolutionary development. The implications for the existence of sentience in nonhuman animals are startling and provocative.

Download or read book Moral Geography written by Amy DeRogatis and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by Edward O. Wilson, this book brings together internationally known experts from the scientific, societal, and conservation policy areas who address policy responses to the problem of biodiversity loss: how to determine conservation priorities in a scientific fashion, how to weigh the long-term, often hidden value of conservation against the more immediate value of land development, the need for education in areas of rapid population growth, and how lack of knowledge about biodiversity can impede conservation efforts. United in their belief that conservation of biological diversity is a primary concern of humankind, the contributing authors address the full scope of global biodiversity and its decline--the threatened marine life and extinction of many mammals in the modern era in relation to global patterns of development, and the implications of biodiversity loss for human health, agricultural productivity, and the economy. The Living Planet in Crisis is the result of a conference of the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation.
Download or read book Creating Effective Transitions written by C. Thomas Potter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses primarily on elementary to middle school transitions. This book was developed with a two-fold premise: one, that educators and parents understand the role they play in meeting the basic developmental needs of individual students during times of transition; and two, that school leaders understand how critically important it is for organizations to create structured transition processes to better ensure student success before, during and after transitions that supports the growth and development of students. This book includes authentic scenarios that are research-based to help combat the barriers associated with the transitional moves elementary students may experience. The goal is that school organizations and institutions will work collectively to strategically develop district-wide and inter-agency (high school and college) transition plans to help students with these critical periods.

Download or read book Ogling Ladies written by Sandra Lindemann Summers and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the European Middle Ages, the harm a person’s gaze could cause was greatly feared. A stare was considered an act of aggression; intense gazing was believed to exert immense power over the individual observed. The love of looking, or scopophilia, is a common motif among female figures in medieval art and literature where it is usually expressed as a motherly or sexually interested gaze--one sanctioned, the other forbidden. Sandra Summers investigates these two major variants of female voyeurism in exemplary didactic and courtly literature by medieval German authors. Setting the motif against the period’s dominant patriarchal ethos and its almost exclusive pattern of male authorship, Summers argues that the maternal gaze was endorsed as a stabilizing influence while the erotic gaze was condemned as a threat to medieval order. Summers examines whether medieval artists and writers invented the idea of “ogling,” or whether they were simply recording a behavioral practice common at the time. She investigates how the act of ogling altered the narrative trajectory of female characters, and she also considers how it may have affected the regulation and restriction of women during Europe’s Middle Ages. Drawing upon contemporary gender studies, women’s studies, film studies, and psychology, Summers argues that the female gaze ultimately governs social formation. The exploration of the female gaze in period literature transcends medieval scholarship and impacts our understanding of the broader problem of gender perceptions and social structuring in Western civilization.
Download or read book Alfalfa Bill written by Robert L. Dorman and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterful biography, Robert L. Dorman traces the career of William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray from his hardscrabble childhood in post–Civil War Texas to his remarkable ascendancy as a nationally known political figure in the mid-twentieth century. The first comprehensive portrait of Murray to be published in fifty years, Alfalfa Bill is both the exploration of a larger-than-life personality and an illuminating account of the birth of political conservatism in Oklahoma. As Dorman reveals, no political label readily fit Murray. The core conservatism of his Texas years was caught up in the ferment of three major periods of American reform—the Populist uprising, the Progressive Era, and the New Deal. Over his long career, Murray strongly advocated for states’ rights, limited government, and strict constitutionalism, yet he was also a consistent foe of corporations and concentrated wealth. The society he sought was small-scale, decentralized, agrarian—and racially segregated. Although he claimed to represent high principles, Murray as a politician was an opportunist, loved a good fight, had a flair for the theatrical, and hungered for power. Dorman depicts Murray from his days as a political operative in the Chickasaw Nation to his leadership of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, and from the Speaker’s chair of the Oklahoma legislature to the halls of Congress. The book follows Murray’s quixotic attempt to found an agricultural colony in Bolivia, and chronicles his amazing Oklahoma comeback in the 1930 gubernatorial election. The final chapters detail Murray’s legendary term as state governor, his failed candidacy for president, and his emergence as a fierce critic of New Deal liberalism and racial desegregation. Unlike earlier biographies of Murray, Alfalfa Bill brings issues of race, class, and gender to the forefront, often in surprising ways. On the surface, the Murray saga was an American success story, yet his rise came at a price for Murray himself, his family, and the people of the state he helped to create. An indelible portrait emerges of an ambitious, domineering, relentless, and unapologetically racist figure whose tarnished legacy seems painfully relevant in America’s current political climate.
Download or read book Mother Mourning written by John Zedolik and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection consists of thirty-five poems expressing the grieving process for the death of the author’s mother. It is organized into five chronological sections: “The Days,” “The Weeks,” “The Months,” “The Year,” and “Beyond.” This organization reflects the effects that time has had upon the author’s grieving process. Some of the poems explicitly concern the death of the mother, while others focus upon the emotional effects of her death upon the author. Though the poems contain philosophical and religious/spiritual elements, the poems’ contents are a result of whatever seemed relevant to expressing the particular shade of emotion the author felt at that time. The final section, “Beyond,” suggests the continuation of the process and the possibility that, in some form, it will never end, though the intensity diminishes as time progresses.
